Horse-trading on Euro league, Premiership leaders consolidate

507

I’ve never known so many people to be keen to get to a game involving Motherwell as there are for tomorrow’s encounter at Celtic Park. Most of us haven’t been to a game since the marginally entertaining 3-3 Champions League draw last month.

Motherwell head a pack of six clubs all within three points of each other, with bottom of the table Partick Thistle just one point further behind at the bottom of the table. They are still in touch with fifth-placed Newco Rangers, who the Lanarkshire club could overhaul if results go their way this weekend, but the table is starting to look like a top five and bottom seven fight.

Each of the top four clubs, Celtic, Aberdeen, Hearts and St Johnstone, are at home against opposition no higher than 6th place Motherwell, so there’s every chance the leading group will extend their advantage.

You and I have been speaking about a European League since 2004. During that time the remoteness of the possibility has come and gone but it’s back on the agenda, with Copenhagen director, Anders Horsholt talking about the proposed league between Danish, Dutch, Scottish, Belgian, Swedish and Norwegian clubs.

This proposal would be enormously beneficial for all involved, the only thing that’s needed is sufficient will on the part of clubs to make it happen, but even within this group of potential beneficiaries there are sub-interests which could pull focus in different directions.

Celtic’s interests would be best served with access to a European-wide league, replacing domestic weekend leagues. They would be able to compete and grow into one of the world’s biggest clubs in this scenario. The same would be true of the bigger Dutch clubs, less so for the Danish, and even the Belgians.

What we now have for the first time is a consensus that some change needs to happen among the disenfranchised. I’d bite your hand off for a scenario along the lines of what Horsholt discussed, but you have to consider this possibility in context of what’s happening at the moment with the financially elite European clubs.

They too want change. A meritocratic-ally-earned Europe-wide structure replacing domestic leagues falls short of their mooted closed-franchise system, but not by much. And it’s a lot more deliverable.

This is all horse-trading for now, but there’s a lot of money sitting on the table, so change is inevitable.

  2. Open Meeting to discuss away ticket scheme

Published on Saturday 15th October, 2016 by Celtic Trust

Open Meeting set for Monday 24th October

Following extensive online discussion and reported meetings between Celtic and some supporters’ groups, there is considerable disquiet among the regular away support and other supporters about alleged proposals to ‘cancel’ away histories and introduce a new scheme for allocating away tickets.

The Celtic Trust have convened a number of Open Meetings in the past which have brought a large section of the fan base together to deal with a particular issue. We have been asked by our comrades in another organisation to convene an Open Meeting to discuss this current issue and we are happy to do that. It is our view that online discussion is great but to resolve issues it is important to come to meetings and have an open debate.

A date and time have been fixed – Monday 24th October at 7pm – and a venue is currently being organised and will be confirmed soon.

Everyone is welcome to the meeting which will be chaired by a Trust representative. Any actions arising from the meeting will be taken forward by the Trust as has been the practice in the past.

We look forward to seeing you all there. Hail Hail

  3. Time to pop in to the office before heading to Paradise. Enjoy the game Bhoys and Ghirls.

    Until we meet again…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

Was on during the week about that. Travelled to quite a few of the away games on the St Mary’s bus. Used to go from Willie Hendersons/ Alfie Conns Bar which, coming from the Occupied 6, I couldn’t quite get my head around. That was until I met Willie, absolute gentleman. Went with the Bradley’s.

  5. What is happpenig on the south side of Glasgow over Govan way is hugely damaging to Scottish football.

It is the inevitable consequence of short term and narrow thinking from 2010/11/12 that refuses to accept that the business model adopted by RFC then TRFC is unsustainable in spite of all supporting evidence.

The business plan presented to SFA/SPFL in 2012 allowing TRFC a place in the game must surely have set some conditions for financial stability? Well in a professional run competent football authority you would think so.

However perhaps the problem is that there is no authority. There is an expectation of it but Regan himself in an interview with Alex Thomson confessed to SFA powerlessness.

Perhaps reality is wakening up the other clubs to the idea that the two club business model on which the game was built in last 20 years is no longer a foundation on which to build.

People with new ideas need to come to the fore and reshape the governance so that there IS authority.

If there is another financial collapse I fervently hope that it becomes the opportunity to kill off the two club model based on a poisonous rivalry and I hope new blood is brought in to do what should have been done in 2012.

Otherwise it will be more of the same.

I’ve heard 3 news bulletins on radio Scotland today and I’ve yet to hear Celtic mentioned! MY personal favourite (so far) was at 10,00am when “Rangers joined Aberdeen in 2nd place…” conveiently ignoring the fact that they are 5 goals worse off. And hey’ll almost certainly be back in 5th come 5.00pm today.

You are, once again, ignoring the big picture. The Scottish establishment will do whatever it takes to protect and promote the Huns.

The Huns and all that surrounds it the very embodiment of the racism so close to Scottish hearts.

It is their vehicle to express their supremacy and superiority.

The Celtic board are simply part of that establishment.

Navigation impossible. When I refresh the website I can see names and posts which is ok, but I can also see names of the posters alone and posts whipped. I can’t write the post.

    System browser

Navigation impossible. When I try to write the posts, the website needs long time to accept each letter and finally freezes after few words.

    Chrome

Navigation impossible. Looks like it needs time to put all advertising windows in ordered places but it’s never ending process. These were only examples.

I spent half an hour on trying to write and post that on cqn using all three browsers.

This is the copy of the text I had to write using word file. As said previously, no chance to write the post directly from the website.

  18. Well after the famine comes the feast, 6 big games in 16 days. Mothers, Germans, Huns, followed by 3 aways to Ross County, Sheepies & Germans again.

A very testing programme but as the cliche goes it’s one game at a time. Hoping for a Champagne performance today but when all is said & done any win will do.

  19. Heading to Cala D’or tomorrow and was concerned that my chances of finidng a bar showing our gamne on Wednesday was slim, what with BArca playing Man City at the same time. But an email exchange with the owner of the aprtment I’m going to has just produced this reply,

“Hlelo Jobo, Good news for you, i asked because of the football and they will show it on one of the Tvs at Carabel, thats a bar located very close to the apartments, on the other side of the beach. You can ask where it is exactly when you collect the keys tomorrow. Kind regards. Antonio”

Might try to drag him along for a few shandies and convert him.

  20. Jobo – The Carabel is also known as the Dogs Bollox (apols Mods). 2 for 1 drinks all night too. We watched a lot of the Euros there during the summer. Guy is a bit loud and there tends to be Karaoke on at same time. Remember the restaurants I spoke to you about? Mistral, Marivent and for a snack the Bon Sol opposite the crazy golf and next to the Play Area/Go Karts. Have a great time.

  21. Very refreshing to see Neganon come onto the blog with a totally different tack today.

    Did he,aye.

  22. Jobo – Walshes Bar will also show the game but that is about a 10/15 minute walk from Carabel in the direction of the centre of Cala D’or. Hail Hail from a blooming boiling Benalmadena – heading to pub to watch match with a few mates. Cheers
