Howe and premature news

265

I read a lot of confidence that the appointment of Eddie Howe is a done deal, all a matter of getting Bournemouth’s play-off games out of the way to allow the appointment of his backroom staff.  If only the world worked this way.

Managerial appointments have commercial consequences.  If Celtic had a manager contracted, the stock market would be informed at an early opportunity.  Negotiations are no one else’s business but it is inappropriate to keep commercially sensitive information like this from the market.

Eddie may have shaken hands, spent an hour with the media team for a planned reveal, but a contract?  Sorry.  You will know very soon after that is signed.  Until then, it is a draft document.

It also makes no sense waiting on the availability of backroom staff before announcing the manager, who could easily tell the media, “I’m working on the backroom team and will let you know when there is news.”

His former Bournemouth assistants will either join him in his next job, stay where they are, or go elsewhere.  Eddie will take another job, with or without them.  This could be the reason proffered for the lack of a signature, but I’m not buying it.

There is also the dirty little subject.  Imagine for a moment the pressure inside every business unit at Celtic Park.  The finance team will have nervous twitches looking at statements and forecasts.  Those in the retail department will be battering their F5 keys and calling everyone in the business hoping for information.  Ticketing have their busiest two month’s work to cram into an ever-decreasing window.  The Foundation and the many who depend on it for support and assistance – jeez – they need our help more than anyone.  “Just.  Do.  It.” will be the message from every department head.

An entire enterprise is waiting on one statement to allow it to trade normally.  Do you really think Celtic are so chilled about money would sit on news that forgoes this cash?  Really?

You and I have seen a lot of the football business.  We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment.  This scenario, I buy.  Anyway, have a nice Thursday!

Surely there’s no chance of a new management team until they have completed the review of the current team?

You would look a bit stupid if you appointed a new team and then the review came out and said that the current one is doing great and should continue.

To paraphrase someone – the review will be well worth the wait.

So he’s Debbie McGee and we’re not even Paul Daniels? Cute and sad.

If we’re such a poor choice compared to a Spurs or Palace or the like, well we can agree that’s a big problem.

We should be pitching this opportunity to someone who might get us, and want to be part of what we can be.

The way Leeds got Bielsa (on 5mill p/a) when they were still a fairly unglamorous, Championship mob.

And really, who is EH compared to how big Celtic are. We used to be somebody!!

No we can’t. Spurs are also a European super league club.

  10. The epl tv deal has been rolled over so loads more lolly for the likes of crystal palace, Brighton and Norwich city

  11. Maybe we do have a plan B….wait until after the cup final and hope that we can be sold on “cup-winning” Jack Ross….

If Eddie Howe is keeping his options open, at what point do we tell HIM “thanks but no thanks” rather than hearing it from him?

  12. QUADROPHENIAN on 13TH MAY 2021 2:03 PM

I think we can realistically say that Tottenham would be a far bigger pull than Celtic. They were in the Champions League final only a couple of years ago and while Mourinho dragged them down, there’s certainly potential there. As for Palace, well they’re a club that are simply happy to survive and any manager choosing them over us would be doing it purely for the money.

I think so too TURKEYBHOY. If not Howe, then we certainly need someone with a similar focus on player improvement, tactics, fitness – like BR also had.

McKay, Harkins and Howe as a senior football management triumvirate would be a pleasant prospect, so hopefully the delay is just getting all the ducks in a row…

  14. Quick update on some strikers identified around a month ago (and in a probably vain attempt to head off a politics discussion) –

    Ercan Kara (25) 2.25m – Rapid Vienna (App 30, goals 14)

No goals in the last 3 games, and was on the bench for the last one.

    Mohamed Bayo (22) 2.7m – Clermont Foot (App 37, goals 21)

3 goals and 2 assists in his last 4 games. Finishing the season strongly along with his team Clermont who sit 2nd in the French Ligue 2 so will be promoted. Would be surprised if mid-table French clubs aren’t showing interest………..or Brentford.

    Thomas Henry (26) 3.2m – OH Leuven (App 31, goals 21)

Jupiler league is now completed bar the play-offs, with Leuven finishing 11th.

    Jonas Wind (22) 4m – Copenhagen (App 25, goals 13)

2 goals, 3 assists in last 7 Danish play-off round games.

    Jean-Pierre Nsame (27) 7m – Young Boys (App 29, goals 18)

Season may be tailing off, only 2 assists in the last 5 games where he’s been regularly subbed.

    Arthur Cabral (23) 7.2m – Basel (App 31, goals 18)

3 goals, 2 assists in his last 4 games.

    Mergim Berisha (22) 10m – SCR Altach (App 27, goals 14)

Regular starter now for RB Salzburg, 1 goal 3 assists in last 4 games.

    Paul Onuachu (26) 15m – Genk (App 36, goals 32)

Involved in the Jupiler league play-offs, where he’s scored 3 in 3. Finishing the league very strongly, too rich for us.

And a couple of new names, with a focus on the Belgian Jupiler league –

    Yuma Suzuki (25) 2.2m – Sint-Truiden (App 34, goals 17)

Generally non-descript career but excelled this year, scoring 17 goals at a struggling club who finished 15th and narrowly avoided relegation. With Yuma accounting for 17 of the team’s total 44 goals.

    Ike Ugbo (22) 2.5m – Cercle Brugge (App 32, goals 16)

On loan from Chelsea with a circa 5m option to buy. Also spent last season on loan at Roda JC (Dutch 2nd tier) where he scored 13 in 28. Cercle Brugge finished 16th, just avoiding relegation, with Ike scoring 16 of their total 40 goals.

  15. In attracting a manager what’s important isn’t how we see ourselves but how we’re seen by the rest of the footballing world

Regardless of how we’ve got here, in England Celtic and them are always seen as being roughly equal

Them under Gerrard have always been “SG’s R*****s”. At the weekend the presenter on 5live actually corrected himself to call them that after initially just calling them the Huns.

The team that have been relegated from the championship and have been receiving an unmerited amount of attention recently are “Wayne Rooney’s Derby County”. After being Frank Lampard’s DC

Even us under BR were seen a bit as being his team, although maybe not as much as Gerrard now

Chelsea were Chelsea with Frank Lampard as their head coach/manager

  17. Maybe Eddie Howe is in a bit of a huff and hasnt joined Celtic yet…because he’s NOT been invited to the Beer frenzy/party next Friday ?

So I formally invite you Eddie as of now…bring yer wallet mate…although you wont need it as you will be amongst Celtic supporters, and we will clue you up on anything that you want to know about the Auld ‘TIC over numerous Beers.

Celtic, in terms of fan base and passion are right up there at the top, of that there is no doubt.

We lack financial clout and are playing in the wrong league.

You can understand why some managers would not consider coming to us.

Howe has a golden opportunity to do a Rodgers and move to the next level after us.

If he were to fail at Spurs or Palace then the games up for him.

I can see us being an attractive proposition to him, hope that’s the case..

  22. Rolling_Stone on

The biggest determining factor in whether a manager comes to us will be his wage. We may not be able to compete with the PL or with the big boys of European football, but still have some financial clout (particularly during the BR years when he gave us a glimpse of the consistently high turnovers that we were capable of).

We have been paying a CEO circa £2.5m (including bonus) in certain years. Save for BR, no recent Celtic manager will have been getting close to that figure.

Sevco paid the Gardner more in the 4th tier than we paid NL during his first stint. That stat cuts both ways.

It’s a huge job for the new boss this year.

    How would you determine fail?

Not winning the title back next season?

I would reckon he would need more time…

  24. CELTIC40ME on 13TH MAY 2021 3:12 PM

If Howe were to fail at Celtic, I think he’d be virtually unemployable in the EPL and would probably have to rebuild his reputation at the top end of the Championship – Fulham or Middlesborough for example.

When you consider the rebuild here and the fact he won’t be given time like Slippy was, he’s taking a risk and must really be backing himself if he decides to come to Celtic.

  25. Rolling_Stone on

    “CELTIC40ME on 13TH MAY 2021 3:12 PM

How about if Howe were to fail at Celtic?”

It’s a possibility. But the probability is smaller than if we hired Jack Ross or a NL level manager.

    Also, what constitutes failure?

  26. onenightinlisbon on

    GEEBEE1978 on 13TH MAY 2021 3:21 PM

Surely winning something with Spurs or keeping Palace in the Premiership are much more unlikely?

  27. onenightinlisbon on

I for one, would give howe next season to start the rebuild. Maybe our supporters wouldn’t….

  28. Friesdorfer – I assume it reverts to the visa or points based system, we’ve signed players from outside the EU based on this system recently (eg. Ismaila Soro).

This Independent article covers it –

    https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/brexit-january-transfer-window-news-b1780873.html

What’s worrying, and new to me, is the inability for English clubs to sign under 18s from abroad (now including the EU). Which means they’ll more regularly look to pinch Scottish U18 talent. At least it closes our U18 talent to the rest of the EU. I’m looking at you, Borussia Dortmund.

  29. Have we ever had any success from hiring a player who was reluctant to come here?

Yes, Viduka scored a lot of goals, but also caused a lot of disruption and moodiness, when he came after a period of going AWOL

That keeper from Oz? Forgot his name- who signed and then had Mental Health issues and had to be released from his contract?

    Hedman? Kharine? Ajeti?

If they are reluctant to come to Celtic, they are unliklely to settle for staying here.

I am happy enough to move on to the next target, so long as it isn’t Petrescu.

  30. ROLLING_STONE on 13TH MAY 2021 3:23 PM

The question wasn’t about our failure but his, and what it would mean for his career

I couldn’t say for sure what’s deemed to be failure, but seeing as our league is seen as being a farmers league by a lot of people in England and Gerrard looks to have gone a whole season unbeaten I’d say the bar is probably quite high

  31. Back to Basics - Glass Half Full on

    Thoughtful and thought provoking Pablo.

Your logic is, as always, perfectly sound but a couple of your points, in particular, concerned me.

“The dirty little subject” – surely nothing more than standard internal organisation politics?

The “football department” is the engine room.

And the needs of other internal departments are secondary to those of the fans (who fuel Finance, Marketing, Ticketing, the Foundation)

“We know that if a talent is good enough, he is incentivised to keep his options open until the last possible moment. This scenario, I buy”

    Fine but ….

We chase good talent because we believe it delivers good outcomes.

The less time good talent has to prepare, the greater the risk to those outcomes.

I’d privately hoped that the nod had been given and work had started on the QT.

If your hypothesis is correct ?

    – 5 weeks from likely start of pre-season

    – 10 weeks from first CL qualifier

Planning for those dates (including squad decisions) are being made without the most important stakeholder involved?

    Hhmm.
