ICC absurd fantasies

“Old Firm game for Wembley”. Heaven help us. I don’t doubt International Champions Cup owner, Charlie Stillitano, has a sharp eye for what he could turn into a commercial success, but there can be fewer worse ideas in the history of sporting endeavour.

So many things could go wrong with such a fixture, some would go wrong, and the contagion would spread to Celtic. There’s no mention in any coverage of this item that Celtic have been consulted at any level, so I’m assuming they were as surprised as the rest of us at the moment (they were at a similar suggestion of a game in Australia a few years ago).

Stillitano cites hosting Manchester City-Manchester United in Beijing later this year as being something of an approximation. It’s not. I suggest he looks to somewhere deep in the Monglian hinterland for a venue for a Glasgow derby of this nature. Even then I would decline.

I have a lot of sympathy for your intention and share some of your opinions.

I just don`t agree with the route you have chosen to express your concerns.

In fact , I think it is counter productive.

I don`t like where the bus is going and it`s the bus to blame.

    Thank you.I`m in good company.

  2. Tommy Gemmell…

Take all the plaudits you get big yin, you deserve every single one of them

Was in The Vogue in Ruggy at the weekend, and picked a Celtic mug with the crest and some nice decoration on it, and ofcourse a photo of our local boy Bobby Murdoch. We got talkin about the players of that era.. Bertie, Bobby, Yogi, and ofcourse yourself.. skill, pride, passion and above all 100% commitment and effort. The current team have shown none of that recently.

They are poorer for the lack of it.

Thanks for being a Celt Tommy.

    Hail Hail.

“Leicester have shown that all is not lost for “unfashionable ” teams with less financial resources . ”

Big achievement that it is, Leicester still get huge amounts of free TV money by being a Premiership club. They could still afford all the players they have with crowds of even half the size they have.

Leicester, even before they “won” the league this season were already on the other side of the glass ceiling to us.

I know we can improve as a team but we cannot get there while we still remain here.

Big clubs will raid Leicester for Vardy, Mahrez, Kante etc; and then Leicester will raid clubs like us for any passing decent players we have. And we will look to steal from Hearts and Hibs and United.

That can only end one way.

  6. Three cheers for big Tommy Gemmell….who put us on the level

    You’d be a megastar in today’s game big man….

    I beg to differ

Think Toto Schillachi for a comparison.

Would still love him at Celtic though.

Appaently John Park turned him down from Fleetwood Town 4 years ago.

  11. Whatever happened to Malcolm Bradbury.

Well, apart from dying 16 years ago, his most famous publication after The History Man was a novella called “Cuts” which “used a host of plays on the word “cuts” to mock the values of Thatcherist Britain in 1986 and the world of television drama production in which Bradbury had become involved after the adaptation of The History Man (by Christopher Hampton). Bradbury derided the philistinism of television executives who wanted to capture the market of Brideshead Revisited and The Jewel in the Crown at impossibly low cost. He also explored the low esteem accorded writers in the hierarchy of television production.”

Mocking Thatcher?? No wonder that was missed by oul Donald Fart.

I think most of us have been aware that an “exit” strategy would be our only hope of competing at the top European tables.

Not to mention separation from the hun.

Had we been able to retain Denayer and Van Dyke ,our chances of European progress next season would , imho , be immeasurably improved. Their departure made life very difficult for our team this season.

Even qualification for the group stages will be ” a success ” , as far as I am concerned.

    And a significant improvement.

Interesting that Ronny cited ” lack of improvement ” as the reason for his departure.

It was there for all to see.

  14. Ever sihce the 1980s the links between the Police and the Murdoch press have been close and unsavoury.

To what extent the Sun ran the public relations aspect of Hillsborough for the Police we will never know. But the whole performance smacked of orchestration.

I don’t think we will ever learn the full extent of Murdoch’s sinister influence on public life in this country. After all, Leveson’s dead. Isn’t it?

    Oh,yes indeed.

  16. Rudi

Of course big clubs will come in for Jamie Vardy. The only reason he would stay with Leicester would be to sample next year’s CL with them and, only then if the clubs after him cannot also offer him CL that year and with a club more likely to do well.

Ask any footballer down there which of these clubs are likely to appear in England’s top 4 of the Premiership over the next 5 years- Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea, Man City and Leicester – and the majority of votes will be divided among the first 6 teams I listed. You will get good odds on Leicester making the top 4 next season far less winning it.

Vardy is only 30- Jermaine Defoe is still scoring regularly in the Premiership at almost 34.

Schillaci came to prominence at Italia 90 when he was only 26 and was already at a big club.

I did see Vardy’s name listed on here a few years ago as a target. Don’t know who turned him down if indeed he was turned down. What I do know was that, since he played for Fleetwood, he would have been denounced as a cheap Lawwell signing that never cost enough

“Interesting that Ronny cited ” lack of improvement ” as the reason for his departure.

It was there for all to see.”

To be precise, he cited lack of improvement this season. He credited the team (and himself) quite rightly with improvement in Season One – from the depths of Legia at Murrayfield to an unjust knock out at the San Siro in the Europa Last 16.

There was no such post October or post-Xmas improvement in season two and he was very honest in acknowledging that. The idea that it was wall to wall diddiness from his arrival to his departure will not stand scrutiny.

    Well, easily said, maybe.

    However…

    1990/91 – finished joint 3rd lost 12 games, drew 7, scored 52 conceded 38

    91/92- finished 3rd again lost 8 games, drew 10, scored 88 conceded 42

    92/3- finished 3rd again lost 8 games, drew 12, scored 68 conceded 41

    93/4- finished 5th lost 9games, drew 20 (sic) , scored 51 conceded 38

    94/5- improved to 4th lost 7games, drew 18 (sic again), scored 39 conceded 33

    We`ll have to disagree .

From the “Defeat from the jaws of victory ” debacle of Legia , I had serious doubts.

He had the face of a man with the realisation that he wasn`t up to the job.

I`d seen that face before .

Ally in the dugout in Argentina against Peru and ” too old ” Cubillas.

His Ronny Roar histrionics underlined the fact.

    Anyway.

Onward and , I`m confident ,upward.

And yet we failed to dominate the mighty midfields produced by United, Hearts, Motherwell and Hibs in the early to mid 90s.

We were so good we drew 20 games in 93/4 and 18 in the following year. We scored 39 goals in 94/95 and conceded 42 and 41 in 91/2 and 92/3 respectively.

Good as Paul and John were, they could not drag a bunch of misfits up to the poor-ish standards of the Scottish SPL pre-Larrson.

In contrast to those terrible stats you bring rose-tinted specs.

Our stats for this current terrible team are Lost 3 (not so sic), drew 8, scored 79 and conceded 26. We are likely to better every stat from the 90 to 95 period for goals scored and conceded, and games lost or drawn.

But, since it was all done without benefit of an Ibrox threat, those with O** F*** thinking will pretend it was better then.
