If only Stalin knew

524

Josef Stalin was adored by his people. He was also a charismatic man with a plan. He had the vision to take the Soviet Union forward to prosperity. But there were famines and genocide. The starving were not exiled to Botany Bay for stealing a handful of corn, hundreds of thousands of them were shot, all while Stalin occupied the Kremlin.

The means of production were breaking down all around. Newly manufactured tractors idled in fields, because simple replacement parts were never produced, causing production targets to be missed, with a whole host of consequential ramifications.

Yet the people remained in awe of their genocidal oppressor. “If only Stalin knew”, they would say, “he would end the suffering and fix all these problems”. It was Beria, or some other apparatchik, who must be responsible.

“If only Stalin knew” has become a phrase to describe a characteristic of human nature. We grow to worship those who inspire us to revolution and reject all evidence when they drive us into the sea. Faults and failings are blamed on others. If only the man (less commonly, woman) at the top was in complete control, this mess would have been avoided.

You will note this morning that “King took a backseat during the recruitment process as Graeme Park, with Stewart Robertson and Andrew Dickson alongside, drove through Caixinha’s move… to Ibrox”.

The sentiment is clear: what is needed is not less influence from King, but more involvement. The plan is great, it just needs to be executed the way King wants it to be.

It’s not like we haven’t warn them.

  1. Looking forward to another masterclass from the invincibles. We should be able to get at a defence with Broadfoot and Greer playing. Killie have a few promising youngsters but Stevie Clarke has not had time to knock them into too much shape yet.

Nice to see some balance in the JFK/LBJ argument. We tend to revere JFK because he overcame, maybe with a bit of help from Daddy’s bootleg pals, the long standing US prejudice against Catholic candidates. LBJ did take us deeper into Vietnam but there is little reason, other than his untimely death, to suspect that JFK would have been able to resist the clamour to tackle the North Vietnam Nationalist movement that they drove into the arms of the commies, in a self fulfilling prophecy. After their Korean stalemate in the 50’s, they were determined not to lose more ground in SE Asia. I would recommend Robert Caro’s book- LBJ was one of those presidents prepared to go against his close party interests and, having been mentored by the good ol’boy Southern Democrats, he turned against them with his social policies, aimed at helping the poor and racial minorities. Never did the USA get so close to having a semi-civilised social programme that we in Europe take too much for granted. Like that old psycopath, Teddy Roosevelt, with his anti-trust laws, he was able to stand up to internal party enemies who would not support him. LBJ and Teddy were both brave and oddball figures. LBJ was a superb political machine operator who had a conscience at heart, and old Teddy was someone who belatedly turned against the excess of his own party’s supporters and funders. Donald Trump isnae fit to lace their drinks.

  2. Discussing the role of the new Sevco (sic) manager, Matthew Lindsay of The Herald (one of Scotland’s supposedly quality newspapers) actually wrote …..

“There will not, despite the steadily improving financial situation at Ibrox, be a “bumper transfer war chest” for him to lavish on new men. ”
