There has been a lot of noise around football in Scotland since we put Newco on the canvas to win the league on Sunday. Notions are being peddled that directors left Newco because they had to make room for new people, who will bring bags of money any day now. It’s just nonsense.
This photo of an imperious Ali (then Clay) and Liston on the canvas is the perfect metaphor for football in Glasgow right now. Ali went on to set records, entertain, and become one of the world’s sporting greats. Whereas this is the best known photo Liston; flattened two minutes into a match against his then rival.
The world had already changed for both boxers before this fight, although Liston only realised it that day, and there was nothing he could do about it.
Now Clay swings with a right, what a beautiful swing!
And the punch raises the Bear clear out of the ring.

I’m in your camp with regard to the Ali/Liston fights.
There was something not quite right about both of them.
Liston was quite awesome before Ali/Clay. In fact, when the reporters asked a defeated opponent, ‘Who do you think Sonny should fight next?’ he replied, ‘Russia’.

I was only 7 years old and the Dynamo Kiev defeat still rankles, though unlike you I wasn’t aware that we shouldn’t have had to play (did we complain? I assume as winners we should not be expected to play a preliminary round but were simply drawn out of hat) – where was Rod Stewart when we needed him…..
After the season that was, this defeat and the Scottish Cup defeat at home to The Pars would’ve been massively disappointing but speaks volumes for Big Jock and the players that we picked ourselves up to come from behind and win the league in the manner we did.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that we were drawn to play Rangers in the Glasgow Cup at at time that whilst behind them in the league we had gone on a long winning run and were skelping everyone.
In these days, it wasn’t an option to put a reserve side out in the Glasgow Cup. We were relishing the game with the rationale that a sound victory over them would do their confidence for league games no good.
Then they suddenly ‘withdrew’ from the game and we were awarded the tie! Have I got that right?
The other benefit of a strong end to the 67/68 season stood us in good stead to complete the treble the following year.

For all of Muhammad Ali’s undoubted achievements his denigration of Joe Frazier was very unfair; I think Ali realised this himself in later life but I don’t think ole Smokin ‘ Joe was the forgiving type.
Sonny Liston made bad Mike Tyson look like Sammy Davis Jr. He was one mean mutha and his (lack of)performance in the fight has never been satisfactorily explained
Celtic Mac @ 3.25…Paisley incident aside, he apparently fell in love with Scotland. He felt “the warmth” of the people. He must have been mixing with tims if that was the case :-)

I remember reading that Ali said he regretted that, as he did his snubbing of Malcom X, after the latter’s split from the NoI.
Ali was clearly a complicated guy … and given the time and his race, much more complicated than someone like I would probablly ever really be able to appreciate…
As for Liston … wasn’t he thought to be much older than claimed … said to be 30, but in truth, really almost 40 and injured by the time he fought Ali …
but boxing was and is not the cleanest sport …. so nothing would surprise me about any of them…

After their defeat yesterday, AS Roma posted a picture of Mo Salah, in a half Roma/half Liverpool jersey… with the caption:

Pretty classy. Good on them. I will add them to the list of teams that I hope do well next season.

Liston wasn’t the brightest button in the box by all accounts, his managers and promoters ripped him off for virtually all he had, they used to give him pocket money which he used to pump into puggies, ( coin operated gambling machines ).
Used to go to quite a lot of amateur boxing internationals in the National Stadium in Dublin which were always wonderful entertainment. Saw Muhammad Ali fight Al Blue Lewis in Croke Park which drew a crowd of 50,000 to the stadium. A young Joe Bugner and John Conteh were also on the Bill. My one and only time to see pro boxing. Ali’s tv interview at the time is still a classic.
Boxing like Tge English premier league is now overhyped..

Yea, 1967-68 was the first time that the holders had to play in the first round.
It came about due to political unrest somewhere on the continent. Can’t remember where just now.
Anyway, they expelled the errant country’s representative, which left an odd number of teams in the ballot.
UEFA’s answer was to include us in the draw.
I don’t know if we complained, but it was their competition and their rules. Maybe we did and they said, ” O K, your oot tae” and that would have evened up the draw!!
Regarding Them withdrawing from the Glasgow Cup.
That is true. They were getting punch drunk from getting beat by us and removed themselves from the fray.
