Indisputable mood to bring in the New

1316

If you were lucky enough, like me, to enjoy a long Christmas holiday, I hope you had a good one.  I’m sure few of us are delighted to be back at it today but there’s an indisputable mood on the blog for bringing in the New.  A fresh start is needed and fortunately we’re at the start of the transfer window.

For Celtic most attention will be directed towards recruiting a striker who is capable of doing the business in the Champions League, not to overlook the important point of doing the business in Champions League qualifiers.  20-year-old Icelandic striker, Holmbert Fridjobsson, finally joins the club this month but although we’ll hopefully see plenty of the player this month he is surely considered ‘one for the future’.

One prolific striker does not solve all of Celtic’s issues, however.  The club remains acutely dependent on Kris Commons’ creativity (as well as goal scoring), which will become increasingly less-effective as opponents setup to inhibit him.  He needs a foil.

Since the annihilation in Barcelona Celtic have offered greater protection from midfield but with both full backs encouraged to overlap the midfield anchor role, previously occupied by Wanyama, becomes crucially important.  It also offers support to the strategy of allowing Commons a free role as an attacking midfielder.

Over the break, Archie MacPherson, Scotland’s greatest ever broadcaster, wrote an article for Celtic Quick News comparing two of Scotland’s greatest ever managers.  These debates are, of course, subjective, but the article provides a few objective points for consideration.  Archie has a totally unique range to deal with this question and is in no doubt as to who the master was.  Look out for the article next week, you’ll enjoy it – no guessing now.

Mark my words, young fellow Tim……….that’s why Murray & Co desperately tried to win the places on the bored…..they know EXACTLY what is going on……and that’s also why the bhun hoardes are crying ‘boycott’ …….. AND why the bored postponed all those games to minimise the protests……..now, where are my sedatives ?

  6. Evening all

Strange weekend – good 70th do for my uncle. Good craic and occasionally the subject wasn’t the Hoops.

Good performance – even in the first half I thought we moved it about better than in the post Camp Nou period. Saints were no threat but these teams need to be beaten

As for Alex Thomson’s blog piece it was seriously odd. Some good points – and although I occasionally put on my PC hat when things get a bit laddish this blog is generally free of the kind of gratuitous sexism highlighted by Thomson ( and whether you say it’s a joke it still betrays a basic contempt for 50% plus of the population).

But this comparison with Millwall of the seventies was both a curious non-sequitur in a clumsy piece and frankly rubbish. I do gather that the atmosphere in and around Fir Park in December was unusually nasty but in the away games I’ve been at the support has seemed a lot more subdued than even half a dozen years ago. Compared to the Celtic support of the seventies far less Millwall of the 70s and 80s the current support are docile.

But there have been too many ‘incidents’ involving the support in the last three years and the perception is that the support is worse than it is. It is wrong that these incidents have been so blown out of proportion but this is the environment we are operating in – and a lazy, overrated journalist from south of the Border seems to have swallowed whole what he’s been fed by his colleagues up here suggests that whether we like it or not and whether it’s deserved or not the reputation of our support is lower than it has been in decades.

  8. I don’t want to sell players, but if Fraser goes then which EPL Team needs a first choice goalkeeper right now??? He’s worth 8/10 million so who is going to pay that in January? I think if he goes then he goes to Europe. Anyone got any thoughts ?

Even if sevco go breasts to the sky, another version will appear for next season. There will always be a Doctor Frankenstein ready to apply the electrodes to the decrepit cadaver. The establishment (whatever that represents) will not oppose the resurrection. Once again we will hear that they have been punished enough and Scottish Football needs them, Celtic needs them and the fans are suffering through no fault of their own. Then the fingers will point at the bigoted Celtic fans. Our hatred of them is preventing their return to the top (where they obviously belong [puke]). The Exiled Tim posted something today which felt like an Irvine type plant. I think we may see more of this tripe. So, all of you who think they will disappear forever, I believe, are living in la-la land.

The interesting aspect of all this, for me anyway, is that Duff and Phelps said Whyte had no claim to the assets as he had not paid for them. Now Tickicus have won the case against Whyte does that not now mean that he should have a security awarded against the assets?

No, my Mhan…….since he sold them when he didn’t own them ( according to D&P, who could yet be proved wrong)…….but whether he owns the assets or not, he is being charged now by the courts to pay Ticketus back, and if he doesn’t, he’s ‘going down’ ……. snd he will be joined by a few others, including sdm……

Not getting a game with Everton, as Doc stated, gets a decent start then disappears ?

QPR interested, and will pay him £50k per week, not worth it in my view
