Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

Just 1 Ticket needed for the Inter Game Please!

    Hi Fellow Celtic Fans,

As my Father is not very well I find myself now travelling up to Glasgow from Hampshire on Wednesday evening and staying until Sunday. I know this is a very long shot indeed, but if there is any kind CQN soul out there who has access to a spare ticket (I know, I know, don’t laugh!) for the Inter match I would dearly Love to take in the game if at all possible. There are only hospitality tickets left at £145 +VAT, so this is a bit ‘Ouch!’ for me. If anyone by some miracle does have a spare ticket, could they please contact me at jim at xanzada dot com. Thanks in advance! :-)

    Yours in Celtic,

    TB&F.

  2. My friends in Celtic,

The ad we put in the newspaper explained exactly how I feel, however I totally understand this viewpoint was by no means universally the way all Celtic supporters felt.

If any of our former players want to talk about the ” old firm” then fine, I think they are incorrect and factually plain wrong, but to call great servants of our club, the hideous term of ” soup takers” is frankly very sad.

Should we really be surprised at the outcome of the sectarian singing, it’s their badge of honour, they are defined by their hatred of us.

Let’s hope we don’t have to play them for a long time. They are a footballing irrelevance and should be treated as such, they’re highlight of the season is lending their training ground to a real team, in the hope that the real team might beat us. That’s as close to European football as they can hope for, sad really.

  7. STEVIE Frail has opted for a mix of youth and experience in the starting line up for tonight’s Development Squad match against Falkirk at Cappielow.

A clutch of first-team stars will get a chance to shine alongside a youthful spine of the team as the Celts look to claw back lost ground to leaders Hamilton Accies in the SPFL Development League.

Darnell Fisher, Liam Henderson, Callum McGregor, Aleksandar Tonev and Stefan Scepovic will all start tonight’s match alongside a strong contingent of youth players, including Leo Fasan and Jamie Lindsay.

The Hoops are on a five-game unbeaten streak and will close the gap on third placed Falkirk to two points with another victory tonight after beating Partick Thistle 2-0 in their last outing.

Kick-off is 7pm and you can follow @Celticfc on Twitter for live match updates.

CELTIC (4-2-3-1) Fasan; Fisher, Kelleher, McCart, Waters; Lindsay, Henderson; Thomson, McGregor, Tonev; Scepovic

Subs: McCabe, McIlduff, Duffy, Breslin, Miller, Hendry, Lafferty.

It saddens me to see former players taking the media shilling and perpetuating the OF myth. The term commonly used on here to describe such former players is “soup takers.” I didn’t invent the term.

    How would you describe them?

  9. Richard Wilson ‏@timomouse 15m15 minutes ago

Rangers have given players Weds and Thurs off training so Inter can use Murray Park. They have a game on Friday. Priorities?!?!

Their players normally train two days n a row? Two days a week? Who knew …

They are wrong mate, like thousands of Celtic fans, they are simply ill informed or too self interested. It’s a point about a game of football.

The term “soup taker” refers to blackmail of starving men. woman and children forced to stand by their faith or stave off hunger and death.

  12. Greenpinta

Fair enough, mate. It’s just that their statements are used by the media and the FoD to bolster the OF argument.

Given that it is unlikely, but not impossible, for Inter Milan to qualify for the Champions League by making it into the top three, the Europa League is almost certainly their best bet as a route into the CL. And make no mistake they are capable of winning it, as are for example the three English teams. This is a big game for Inter, not quite as big as in 1972, but important nevertheless. We have another route into the CL, they probably don’t. Do not think they are quite as good as AC Milan of a few seasons back, but Gordon Strachan’s team, had a couple of seasons together when we played them. Our players need to believe that if we can get by Inter Milan, we have a chance against anybody else likely to stay in it.

  16. bournesouprecipe on

Any particular reason why the derogatory posts about two former Celtic players weren’t simply deleted?

  17. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

I’d be delighted to see Celtic to knock Inter out, just can’t see it happening.

I know we’ve built up some momentum of late, but it wasn’t too long ago that a significant number of us were still doubting Ronny’s management.

I’ll be honest, despite the results I’m still not convinced with the one striker supported by mid fielders tactic.

Having wrote that, I can see the benefit of progressive midfield play, just not to the detriment of two forwards.

Got to remember, we are a work in progress for Mr D. and I won’t be disappointed if Inter beat us. I member the benefit that Lenny’s team gained from this tournament.

  18. That Patricia Ferns can fair belt out the songs…she used to be a regular at the St Patricks Day bash in Coatbridge, but has been absent for past couple of years…..maybe she”s not allowed to sing her favourites any more…..she was always the star attraction…..always finished her gig at the end with the Soldiers Song……maybe the folk in Airdrie could hear her and complained…..always remember the local rag printed a readers letter saying Coatbridge had sectarian flags flying …the half wit of a reader said flags were blue and yellow with Henrik Larsson on them.

  20. wits,

Our manager was making the point that he found the atmosphere at Celtic matches in general better than those in the EPL. He then included the game against the undead as well.

If you feel that he was saying it was better than other games involving us, I can’t agree.

  21. Would Celtic have been fined for the flare…..if the huns had”nt sang sectarian songs….I personally think so.

  22. I think the SPFL have done their best to let the undead off the hook again. I am not quite sure how they have allocated blame for the sectarian singing, as I have various versions on the STV and BBC. I do,however, find it hilarious that they have excused our “provocative” banner. I think “witty” would have been a better adjective.

  23. bournesouprecipe

Presumably because Paul67 has not seen them. Whatever views posters may have, doesn’t seem quite right to insult former players attending a charity event, which many on here will attend.

  24. Captain Beefheart on

    Evening everybody.

Once again the gutless elements fail to challenge the crap which polluted Hampden the other week. Police Scotland are chumps as are the football administration.

  25. What’s the problem with asking people to simply tell the truth as per our newspaper ad?

The reason why the big lie has taken root is because it was never confronted. People who do not confront it facilitate it.

Rangers died a new club took their place and their first match was against Berwick. Those that claim they didn’t die and wish to claim their history should pay their debts (and particularly the face painters who I have a soft spot for)

Shout it from the rooftops the Rangers died.

I never used the term O** F***. I hated it because it enabled bawbags to use it in a “ones as bad as the other” type of way thereby failing to punish them for their blatant sectarianism. Much like today’s judgement in actual fact.

Anyway 16 glad to see you posting and ACGR hasn’t buried you under his patio.

  28. In relation to punishment for singing banned songs. If the punishment even came anywhere near fitting the crime ,points deductions, getting winged out of competitions ( which they do quite well of their own volition) at least it would make them think twice before launching into their vile repertoire.
