Inter trepidation, Packy, Tommy, Joe & Patricia

809

Inter have hit a bit of form recently but comments coming out of Milan indicate their visit to Celtic Park is viewed with some trepidation.  The stadium’s Champions League reputation remains fresh in the memory, even if the team has been transformed since the last major victory over a truly top team two years ago.

A number of those who will play for Celtic on Thursday will have only seen those great European nights on television.  Playing in front of 60,000 Celtic fans will be a new experience.  Transforming this support into an energising force is our job.  Inter’s first objective will be to frustrate and quieten the crowd.  My hunch is that this will be difficult.

We have the line-up confirmed for the CQN11 St Patrick’s Dinner, which is at the Kerrydale Suite on Friday 13 March.  Topping the bill for the Q&A is Packy Bonnar, Jock Stein’s last signing, who made his debut on St Patrick’s Day 1979.

Packy’s Celtic and Ireland team-mate, Tommy Coyne, will also be taking part.  Tommy had an incredible career and speaks intelligently on football, and life in general.  We’re also delighted to have Joe Miller.  Joe played in the same Celtic team as Packy and Tommy.  Part of our historic Centenary Team, he also scored that unforgettable Scottish Cup Final winner.  More recently Joe formed the Association of Former Celtic Players.

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jock Stein’s first game as Celtic manager, which takes place that week, we also have Jock’s personal friend and biographer, Archie Macpherson will speak about the great man.  If you’ve ever needed inspiration…..

I’m also delighted to confirm we have Celtic’s First Lady of Song, Patricia Ferns, who is making the journey over from Ireland for our night.

Let me know if you still need a ticket, celticquicknews@gmail.com

    Unbelivable nonsense on here today

2 fine servants to Celtic,Paddy Bonner and Joe MiIler being called soup takers and w***ers because their view of football in Scotland doesn’t coincide with the self appointed true beleivers

    Jeekers lads get a grip

  2. I have no time for Pat Bonner. Hadn’t much time for him as a goalkeeper either. I find him unctuous–a Uriah Heep. Tom Boyd tells it as it is, as does Tosh McKinley. Sutton, Hartson, and the rest–how, as former Celtic players (and there are more I could mention) can they look in a mirror and not despise what they see? Is money more important than respect?

What do you think would happen if a current Celtic employee came out and told the world that Rangers 1872 died in 2012 and the game was a bogey

    No idea

Maybe a few perma ragers would rage a bit more

They don’t really need an excuse

Anyway we all now the truth, they died didn’t they and now they have a new club pretending to be the old club..

So let me get this straight and feel free to correct me..

Current employees of CFC are allowed (by you) to toe the party line ( ??) and mention Rangers and Old Firm

    HOWEVER

If an ex employee alludes to that he/she is a soup taking,,back of the bus sitting, forelock tugging etc etc

An awful lot of people have trouble accepting that..

Jumping on ex Celtic players because they don’t toe the CQN party line is what I cant approve of.

FFS this blog is obsessed with Rangers .

    But shh don’t mention it,

I’m just looking for commentators to tell the true not be part of the big lie

  9. I think many people still use the term ‘Old Firm’ just as a convenience.

It’s easier to say than ‘Celtic versus Rangers’. Just as a lot of people use a ‘hoover’ when really it might be an Electrolux or a Dyson, it’s not technically correct but also not something to get too wound up over IMO.

I’ve long stopped using the term myself as I know it’s defunct but you cant stop people, eh?

  10. WITS

Current employees of CFC ARE NOT permitted to talk to the media without consulting the Club. Former employees are not restricted but, if they wish to earn money from the media, they seem to be required to toe the old firm line.

These guys are therefore soup takers. Simples.

The club finds itself in a dilemma regarding Old Firm. The problem is that our plc are whores to ever hapenny that come our way. Hence our current stance or lack of stance regarding Old Firm. The club wants its cake and it wants to eat it. As Paul67 has proven with the direction of CQN before and after the 5 way agreement. We don’t give a fu** about Old Firm we only care about maximising profits. Hence our 3 monkey stance at every opportunity. Peter Lawwells original we don’t need the Old Firm statement when they first went into admin was clearly an initial negotiating stance. DD came out and clearly masked his Old Firm colours to the mast and since then it has been full Old Firm steam ahead. The club do not want to alienate any possible penny that may come its way. Modernising the game , applying the laws on and off the field were just sound bites, they are not going to do that if it will affect the bottom line. Clearly Old Firm means more money.

The club and DD in particular has persuaded ex managers to come out back the rebuilding of the Old Firm. KD, MON, GS, NL … anyone that that they have paid millions too has backed up their stance. Anyone who wants to remain in the tent and keep earning coin or future income via Celtic has to tow to their stance. Otherwise you will find yourself urinating outside the tent. Even if you don’t fancy working for them any longer.

The Old Firm is alive and well. We CELTIC FC are the corner stone of it and have been since we helped to broker the 5 way agreement. That obviously tinkers with some peoples rigid belief systems but not enough to allow it to impact on the plc`s bottom line.

Of course there is an Old Firm, we’d be lying if we said otherwise.

Whilst agreeing with PF`s general sentiment, I would turn that into a question. Do some CFC legends really have a problem understanding that?

If they do have such a problem, why should we continue to respect them?

Certainly, we can remember them fondly ( or not ) as players but I do not see why that should distort our judgements of them as `pundits`.

Part of the problem lies in supporters confusing quality player with quality person.

BTW KD probably would not need much persuading as for the others they are all smart enough to know that it would be detrimental to their reputations amongst the literate .. especially by uttering them before mentioning the titles that they themselves were diddled out of is highly revealing. I am sure they thought of that but a favour is a favour and secrets are best kept

Anybody been paying attention of late?

  22. Whilst I don’t want to slag off previous players , some legends , but are they so far removed from the support they just don’t understand or know our feelings on the matter ?

Is it really about money ?

    If so that’s sad

  23. Explayers and Exmanagers of our club are entitled to have their opinions..How they come to that opinion is their business..i have no interest in what they have to say, but as i said before, the media know who to ask to get the qoute that fits the smsm’s agenda..we all have our opinions..they can have theirs…i couldnt care less…

  24. Scandalous decision from the authorities Not surprising tho. Playing football this Sunday against a team of strathclydes finest. Will be very vocal in my opinion of the decision. Will also break into a chorus of walk with me oh my lord They will know they have been in a game.

  26. Radio Scotland News at 5 pm gave the ‘one is as bad as the other ‘ spin to the news that SPFL will no further action after semi final.

. Mentioned 12 arrests on the day for sectarianism…,implying no apportionment of blame.

However on Radio 5 the same news was given the correct analysis.

“SPFL will take no further action against either club for offences at the League Cup semi final

“R@&&&3rs for sectarian singing and Celtic for flares and a banner taunting R@&&3rs financial woes”

That’s as best I can remember as I was channel hopping and driving .

Maybe Radio Shortbread should tune into Radio 5 to hear what’s going on in their own catchment area.
