Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate. But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout. Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.
The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.
Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes. As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.
Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.
Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.
Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken. Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play. Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.
Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance. Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period. Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.
Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.
With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed. A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

It’s easy to be wise after the event, but maybe on reflection when VVD got sent off we should have moved Bitton back and brought on Henderson.
I can understand RD’s thinking.
He felt he needed to replace VVD at CB and realistically if we was to make a sub it was either GMS, Armstrong or Guiddetti.
Of those three GMS is probably the physically weakest defensively so he got hooked , which meant we lost the guy who up to that point was most effective in forward areas.
Maybe bringing on Liam, he could have offered a decent defensive shift & a threat going forward.
I say all this in the context that I thought our 10 men played really well tonight, and I couldn’t fault any effort.

Hi guys not read back but just read this page and it appears the GB are getting stick again. Can I just say that I know for a fact that there has been a split in the GB recently and those that want to use pyros and graffiti etc have left the GB and no longer sit in section 111.
The main body of the GB are working with Celtic PLC and will continue to do so, they have no control over individuals who choose to use pyros etc.
We rant on about the Sevco fans who are guilty of various misdeeds and we point out that if the other Sevco fans disowned and pointed out the guilty parties then there would be some progress made.
We have a few nutters who seem hell bent on bringing our club down.
Time to practice what we preach?

Genuine question.
Are the GB and the Celtic Ultras two seperate groups?
Whether they are or not, Celtic sold them tickets, therefore they must be registered with the club.
In my long ago schooldays, if an individual culprit could not be identified, the whole class got punished.
The result was that the offender suffered the wrath of his peers and did not sin again.
With the team on the park creating the excitement and interest, there is no longer any need for manufactured “atmosphere”.

Tell you what is a feckin disgracd
No terrestrial highlights of tonight’s game.
Midweek scotsport and Sportscene Shows were great on euro nights.

except when Arthur Montford kept interrupting the action to inform us that Celtic had scored off screen and that the score was now whatever. :-))
Very proud tonight. I think this Inter home and away tie, if we played it 12 months down the line, would see us going through with ease.
We wouldn’t gift 2 goals at home, and VVD a year from now would I hope be clever, like real world-class defenders are, instead of believing his own hype.
Armstrong, Mackay-Stevens, Broonie, Bitton, Johansen and Gordon played like they know how to do it in the elite. Matthews did well, as did Ambrose when he came on, I thought.
James Forrest had a hard role to fill up front in a 10-man side in the San Siro. He didn’t do it very well. Guidetti I think did well as the lone striker.
But whatever the opinions, we are going the right way. I have bloody LOVED watching the Hoops against Inter home and away. Next year we will be better, the year after that, we will be better still.
We are a work in progress, and the work is progressing very nicely indeed.

Just watched the game after the bairns confirmation.
Gutted and angry.
Can’t help but think RD made a mistake taking GMS off .
Inter had no answer to him.
Would have taken Armstrong off or even Guidetti and let GMS lead the line.
As for VVD. Don’t think either was a yellow card.
Would have red carded the wee fud who waved the imaginary card though.

The point though is that whoever held that flare tonight knew exactly what the repercussions are going to be but went ahead and did it anyway.

So who do you suggest should have come off rather than GMS. I notice your view is identical to the two buffoons in the BT Sport Studio. One of them suggested it should have been Johansen – one of the most important players you could have when a man short. You need players that can cover the pitch – support the frontman and get back to help as well. Despite playing well, when at full strength GMS was the logical substitution. Guidetti needed to be replaced and Forest offered an alternative.
As usual too many illogical conclusions and comments being drawn.

One of the problems with away euro games is that seat allocated numbers mean nought. You can wander to any seat you like, even remember at Barca the steward saying pick your seat. As for Udenise (spelling) pick any two thousand seat you like …..

What I don’t understand is how these Ultras can smuggle a flare thru Customs or do the perpetrators travel by car ?

Our pseudo Ultras are an expensive joke.
Why anyone would want to be associated with fascistic groups who made watching Italian football on the curva by ordinary fans a fear filled, intimidating, experience, driving out women and families, you can only wonder. (They sometimes try to claim they have nothing to do with facism. You would need to zip up the back to believe that. Their manner is militaristic, supposedly disciplined with an internal order. Actually they are thugs, occasionally with a heart. It is a crime to criticise them in Italy with their apologists always ready to excuse; most people are too scared to say much – understandably)
Personally I recall in 1985 being chased by knife and machete wielding Ultras along the banks of the Tiber after a Napoli match. The fact that I and tens of others there were supporting the same ream as them was irrelevant. That’s usually the case when it comes to Ultras. They are elitist, violent snobs. They love good PR of course, are always the victims and always have a good reason for stopping a game, beating someone up, knifing someone or murdering someone. If only everyone just followed their rules, gave them space to express themselves, stayed out of their way, see the world the way they do, everything would be just fine.
