Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

  1. It’s really depressing here these days.

Seems the big point of interest is always what the away supporters are being accused of, only without the trial, just condemnation.

While we bend over for the money and corruption.

Strange place to be in as a Celtic Supporter, and not really for me.

I expect the Board will be happy with that, whatever their baffling agenda might be

I think Paul67 warned about this a few years ago.

    It’s not for me :(

‘Any evidence that it was the GB who set off flares tonight?’

    No.

It was one of them who did it last time though, so I draw my own conclusion.

And the reason I know is my mate was about six feet away from the clown when it happened.

Perhaps the GB should stick to domestic games.

    I’ll ask you again though.

Whoever let off that flare tonight, who was he trying to impress, fellow Celtic fans or fellow ultras?

Two, maybe three weeks, ago, I posted that I had a list of those posters that I scrolled past.

I noted then that the aforementioned Alfie had been added to my list faster than any other.

It is quite surprising and disappointing that so many others continue to engage with him.

Our pseudo Ultras are an expensive joke.

Why anyone would want to be associated with fascistic groups who made watching Italian football on the curva by ordinary fans a fear filled, intimidating, experience, driving out women and families, you can only wonder. (They sometimes try to claim they have nothing to do with facism. You would need to zip up the back to believe that. Their manner is militaristic, supposedly disciplined with an internal order. Actually they are thugs, occasionally with a heart. It is a crime to criticise them in Italy with their apologists always ready to excuse; most people are too scared to say much – understandably)

Personally I recall in 1985 being chased by knife and machete wielding Ultras along the banks of the Tiber after a Napoli match. The fact that I and tens of others there were supporting the same ream as them was irrelevant. That’s usually the case when it comes to Ultras. They are elitist, violent snobs. They love good PR of course, are always the victims and always have a good reason for stopping a game, beating someone up, knifing someone or murdering someone. If only everyone just followed their rules, gave them space to express themselves, stayed out of their way, see the world the way they do, everything would be just fine.

    ……………………

I don’t think the Green Brigade come into that category. I do realise that several countries have great problems with Ultra fans and once watched a fairly shocking documentary on Lazio’s Irreducibile Ultras. The green Brigade are nothing like that.

  9. Well before these ties I said a credible performance would be enough for me. We got that and more. I look forward to the future.

I have never suggested Johansen come off,my choice would have been Guidetti, then young Henderson on at some point.I said previously legs were the priority.

Just watched the game after the bairns confirmation.

    Gutted and angry.

Can’t help but think RD made a mistake taking GMS off .

Inter had no answer to him.

Would have taken Armstrong off or even Guidetti and let GMS lead the line.

As for VVD. Don’t think either was a yellow card.

Would have red carded the wee fud who waved the imaginary card though.

Brave performance overall and proud of the Lhads efforts against the odds .

We are defo a team on the up .

Love the way we play at the moment.

    Can only see good things.

Gordon was brilliant and our 2 recent signings are excellent.

Agree 100%. GMS had the pace to trouble them especially with us done to ten men and playing on the break for most of the second half. Noticed on TV that John Kennedy had a big input into the decision.

Still, we are an improving time.

  19. As I’ve said I can understand any Celtic supporter who criticises pyro at the football.

However, I won’t stand by and say nothing when folk say nothing about the sectarianism and racism of the huns yet jump on the backs of our own support.

  20. We get fined 10,000 Euros by UEFA, the very next day someone lights a flare in the San Siro at a Europa League game.

    It’s senseless, selfish and stupid.

    Correct.

I am not in a position to prove the identity of the individual who let off the flare.

So every thing’s OK and the GB are in the clear.

And it wasn’t a GB member who did it last time, and my mate must be a liar.

    Yeah, right you are.

Notice you haven’t answered my question.

Incidentally what’s your opinion of whoever it was who let off the flare?

  23. I think every member of the Celtic squad has been scapegoated at some point:-

    Scapegoat Team 1

Gordon- an injury bombscare waiting to happen. Trained withe the Ibrox clumpany works team. Hates us and went up for a corner just to annoy us.

Matthews- never blocks crosses. A coward. Useless defender, X Factor wannabee

Denayer- Loanee. Project signing. Developing him for Man City’s benefit. Too wee to be a centre half.

VVD- Made of chocolate and loves himself. Not as good as he thinks he is. Too laid back. Far too Dutch. Always wanting to leave Celtic.

Izzy- Can’t defend. Crosses are useless. Always posted missing. Outjumped constantly at the back post. Always targeted as a weak link by the opposition

Mackay Stevens- Not rated by United fans. Inconsistent. His own manager did not think he was ready to play at International level. Got found out in England.

Bitton- Project signing. Only bought because he has an Israeli agent. Beanpole- can’t tackle. Only does sideways and back passes.

Brown- headless chicken. Chases crisp packets. Can’t pass. Is a closet gers fan fae Fife. Hothead- terrible disciplinary record. Sold us out in the CL with Neymar.

Armstrong- Boring modern athlete of a player. No discernible outstanding talents. Not a great passer, not a great tackler.

Johansen- A Duracell bunny who came from a mickey mouse league and club. Scott Brown mk. 2. Can’t pass and has no composure in the box.

Guidetti- See VVD. More confidence than ability. Stopped scoring once he wanted away. Only in the team because Scepovic is depressed and Griffiths & Stokes have been arrested

    Scapegoat Team 2

Zaluska- Not good enough for United. Always likely to ship a few goals. Not good enough even to warm the bench

Lustig- Always injured. has a silly moustache. Played club fitba in Norway. Written off as useless half way through his first match. Celtic supporters just know, you know- we don’t need evidence.

Ambrose- Bomb scare. Can’t head a ball right. Panics everyone around him. Is really a right back- no wait- he’s a defensive midfielder- maybe a hooker. Not good enough for Africa Cup of Nations.

Mulgrew- Slow on the turn. Can’t cope with nippy players. Utility player who is not good enough in a variety of positions. Terrible baby-sitter.

Reserve left back- We huvnae got wan

Forrest- Injury prone. Coward. Doesn’t track back. Threw his hands up once. Flashes his boaby. Runs funny. Is probably not injured -just swinging the lead.

Commons- Past it. His wife is a better player. No first touch. Can’t hack it in Europe. Fat- overweight. Not a Ronny Deila type.

Wakaso- Hothead. Hides in games. Does nothing special. Loanee- not worth it

Calum McGregor- Lazy does not track back. A Deila favourite. Greedy- can’t pass. Played one good game then stopped trying.

Stokes- Lazy, unreliable, slow, past-it. Never scores- does not do the defensive hard chores. More interested in his hair than scoring.

Scepovic- Moody. Does not want to be here. Can’t get a game in front of a slow Swedish guy and a ned frae Embra.

    Subs:-

Fasan- Can’t displace Zaluska. How bad must he be!

Fisher- Can’t displace the unfit Lustig or the coward Matthews. Only good enough for English non-league level

O’Connell- Slow on the turn. Family more suited to Rugby than fitba.

Henderson- He’s 18 already and if he can’t hold down a first team place by that age -we should punt him

Rogic- Flash in the pan. The new Crosas. Great white hope becomes great white dope.

Tonev- Shoots but does not score. Villa reject. Probably a racist. Leigh Griffiths won’t like him. Has skill but no application. Does not chase crisp packets.

Boerigter- Not a footballer. More a treatment table duvet cover.

Griffiths- Neddish nature. Racist (?). Bad influence- undermines the manager. More interested in the Hibs than us. Too many weans and ex-wives.

All managed by Ronny Deila- Norwegian nonentity. The cheap option. Peter Lawwell’s puppet. A PE teacher. Football idealist verging on fantasist. The new John Barnes.

This must be the worst Celtic team ever since the last worst ones under Lennon and Strachan.

It’s a wonder we’ve no been relegated yet.

  25. Scrolling back, on a night where there were so many positives in a Celtic performance, cannot believe all the posts and aggro re The Green Brigade.

From what I’ve seen one smug looking kid had a flare in his hand whilst standing behind a wee flag with the words Celtic Ultras. If he is from Glasgow he should be easily identified, he could be from anywhere, there is nothing at all to link him with The Green Brigade. If he is identified, his case should be highlighted and he should be banned for life.

However to attack the Green Brigade because of this is utter nonsense, we needn’t get too annoyed by the partisan comments from the MSM, we have plenty of posters on here, who would give the MSM a good run for their money.

  26. Dearie me, the blog is now infested with total winkers.

The team done good, we were cheated, and they need a scapegoat, step forward the GB.

  27. I’m not a football manager but I hope that Ronny will turn to me to establish where he went wrong tonight when our £13m team came up against a £74m side and we had one man less for most of the game.

I had a really poor day at work today so will be phoning Ronny tomorrow for his advice even though my job has has nothing to do with football.
