Internazionale 1-0 Celtic

800

Inter scored a breakaway goal from Guarin, who should have earlier received a red card for deliberately striking Stefan Johansen on the face, on the 88th minute to win this tie 4-3 on aggregate.  But despite playing for the majority of the game with 10 men, after Virgil van Dijk’s 36th minute red card, Celtic looked comfortable throughout.  Man of the match Nir Bitton dictated play for long periods.

The best actual chance of the game fell to Gary Mackay-Steven on the 7th minute when a cross-field pass from Emilio Izaguirre was misjudged by the Inter defence, allowing Mackay-Steven to control and nip clean through on Carrizo but the keeper spread himself to block.

Stuart Armstrong had a strong penalty claim denied on 14 minutes.  As he prepared to shoot, Santon grabbed him by the shoulder but the referee gave the first notice that he would give the home team the benefit of the doubt all night.

Inter took time to get into the game but Icardi almost connected to a blasted cross ball by Santon as the home team made their first chance, on 19 minutes.

Two minutes later Celtic had their second penalty claim on the evening when John Guidetti was held but again the referee was in no mood to award a decision against the home team.

Ultimately the red card may have determined the outcome of this game but if anyone expected Celtic to collapse afterwards, they were mistaken.  Inter enjoyed their best spell of the game between van Dijk’s 36th minute red and halftime, but the man advantage was not evident from the flow of play.  Craig Gordon made a stunning save from a header, which was ultimately found to be offside, on 38 minutes, and two minutes before the break Gordon saved again at his near post after Jason Denayer blocked an initial shot.

Needing a goal while a man down requires a difficult tactical balance.  Celtic decided to keep things tight until later in the second period.  Gordon saved twice, from Hernanes and Guarin, before the latter retaliated when Stefan Johansen nutmeged him but hitting the Celtic player with a forearm smash.

Ronny Deila sent Kris Commons on for the final 13 minutes and, with Celtic struggling to test the keeper, the midfielder tried his luck from 35 yards but Carrizo was untroubled.

With Celtic pressing for what would have been a winner, Inter broke with speed.  A Guarin shot from 25 yards thundered into the top corner, leaving Gordon with no chance.

I’ve said I know that that 2 were let off tonight and it’s absolutely stupid.

You’ve still no evidence who did it tonight though. I made no comment on the previous flare you spoke of.

  3. We live in interesting Celtic times…

The result last week was largely determined by our football errors and tonight by individuals inexperience. (I’m ignoring the awful referee for reasons I’ll explain below).

Frustratingly, in both games, its difficult to judge the extent of our progress because we’ve got ourselves into bad situations where the nature of the games has been set off kilter. Celtic had to accept the changed circumstances but its also true Inters mind set was affected.

What remains unknown is what would have happened if there were no gifts and 11v11. That we can compete toe to toe is clear enough. Did Inter switch off at 0-2? Did they play a more contained game when against 10?

No Celtic fan will be other than delighted at the way we play the ball out of defence even when pressurised. Good players do that, good coaches encourage it. That we press, play on the front foot and encourage our full/wing backs forward is just so Celtic.

Fantastically annoying not to have more answers.

That VVD was unlucky to get two yellows is true but that he already had one should have been enough to ensure he didn’t give the ref the chance to issue a second. I’m remembering VVD has limited experience in Europe but surely enough to have avoided what he did.

I haven’t been Virgil’s biggest fan, though I think he has potential to be really good but Europe hasn’t often shown him in a good light. Quite a few on here have talked warmly of VVD and that hes a near irreplaceable asset. For me the jury’s still out…there could well be a better option out there. After all not many were celebrating VVDs arrival with great fanfare. He doesn’t look it but I think in football terms Virgil is immature.

Tonight I thought Jason was fantastic. Again I admit to being unconvinced by him but with VVD off he just grew and grew. I always thought he was too wee. Remember he REALLY IS just a boy. His likely departure is the more damaging IMO.

    Ronny? What can I say?

I was never for or against RD. I didn’t know him. That he should be given time was only fair and IMO some of the comments on this blog were cringe worthy in their unreasoned negativity and vitriol. He may or may not turn out to be long term good but as things stand at the moment he has players playing for him, he has players adapted to his system and seemingly enjoying it and has the supporters behind him. We play good attacking football.

Ronny doesn’t have European experience worth speaking of. The pressing game usually produces more midfield niggling/clumsy/contact fouls but I think in Europe especially away from home there needs some adaptation. Its not right but it needs to be assumed the ref will be a homer.

It could yet go wrong (confident it won’t) and next season may be more difficult as our opponents will know more of Ronny and how he sets up. My instinct, no more than that, is that he is excellent. His handling of the press is brilliant and his handling of players seems very assured. He is clearly in charge.

I’ve rambled a bit (its the beer) but I’m really, really hopeful of great times ahead.

  4. The BT commentator in the Feyenoord game saying that their fans “Racist chants”were not acceptable, and the ref had every right to take the teams off.

Obviously not singing from the same hymn sheet as his employers.Unbelievable.

That “James May”lookalike trumpet on the BT panel saying It was never a penalty re Armstrong, and that whimp Hartson sitting like a fekin pansy, scared to disagree.Ec Celts.WTF happens to them?.

  5. eddieinkirkmichael on

VVD deserved his red card, his first yellow he went right through the Inter player, the second was maybe a bit harsh but tbh he should have dealt with it better as Denayner was covering him.

The ref imo had not a bad game, I thought we were overly physical and lucky on occasions not to be punished more severly.

VVD is a good defender in Scotland but gets shown up in Europe, I’d bite anyones hand off who was prepared to pay £10m.

Good thing about tonight and last thursday is we are progressing as a team and I’m confident we can go on to secure the treble. I love watching this team play and it’s been a while since I said that about any Celtic team.

No, the media and supporters would talk about the hooligans and hooliganism. Green Brigade, Celtic Ultras or any other Ultras are not criminals or hooligans. They are salt of the stadiums. On the other hand, some hooligans and criminals find Ultras fine places for expressing their ill views and for criminal acting but that’s another story.

    HT,

I opened my post with a genuine question, which I believe you answered, I.e., there was a split, so in effect therevare two groups now.

I also admitted my school days were long, long ago.

Those were the days if you went home and said you got the belt, it was soon accompanied by a clip round the ear, or it’s equivalent.

    Has society evolved?

I have long believed that the morgue/ library atmosphere at Celtic Park in recent years was solely due to the dull football on offer.

A Celtic team, playing open, attractive, attacking football will create that special atmosphere that can’t be faked by any amount of drum banging and tuneless chanting.

Finally, you really must desist from defending and deflecting from the activities of people who harm the club, for reason or reason”s unknown.

You said that you witnessed the distress your partner suffered in two occasions due to flares.

Surely you must gave zero tolerance for anyone engaging in the practice.

No player is bigger than the club, neither is any ” supporter”.

We already knew we were top dogs in Scotland. What the 2 ties v Inter have shown is that we can more than hold our own in more elevated company.

We are frequently being told that being top dogs in a pishy wee league proves nothing. That argument has been rendered useless now that we are looking like a proper European team.

Or at least on the way to becoming one.

  16. Ex Cathedra

I didn’t call you anything, simply pointed out the similarity of views. My recollection is that Forest came on to play the thankless role of frontman in a 10 man team at a much later stage in the game. Despite the denigration of this player on here, he does have the ability to carry the ball, as he did on the rare occasion he was able to get the ball. Prior to that, I think Guidetti’s greater strength and presence was important until he inevitably tired. The manger tried different options as the game progressed. Unfortunately, is hand was forced early on, and he had to sacrifice one of his 3 forward midfielders. He choose the least defensive one, which at that stage in the game was perfectly logical.

I normally agree with a lot of your posts but have to disagree with your view above on the Virgil sending off. I also want to keep Virgil for another season. I think he has some development to do and Celtic can be the beneficiaries of that and we can sell him on for more that £10 million when the time is right.

  18. Nah Eddie

    The ref was atrocious.

Putting aside the VVD incidents: the elbow, the corner that lead to VIrgils red, then there was the Armstrong penalty.

The games against Ajax were first in that sqaud after the winter break. Ajax were well into the competition. We lost two key players before these games. Ajax scored from all the chances they had, we missed from all we created.

  29. Celtic go toe to toe with Inter in the San Siro. A team from an impoverished league matching one of Europe’s giant clubs who won the big cup just 5 years ago, and the main topic on here now is a pyro.

This is a sideshow, sure let the club deal with it and punish the individual(s) accordingly

In my opinion it was an arrogant selfish piece of tokenism, by whom I know not.

But the only real story is that Celtic are on their way back, to being able to compete at a EC standard, and with a few more months to the CL qualifiers, things are going well.

My one concern is Ronnie’s comment tonight that they have very little time to train.

I would hope that the PLC forego any money making pre season tour in favour of a summer training camp like we had in Jan.

Second yellow came from their goal kick that was our corner. Ivan the Terrible indeed.

Re BBC – is that the one who gave the 50% of Sons of Struth that was not arrested on league cup semi final day a platform to say he heard nothing at Kirkcaldy last Friday?

Or the BBC which couldn’t stress enough that the stonewall penalty we were denied tonight was no such thing?

Or the BBC that the other morning held a phone about ‘Old Firm’ racist and sectarian chants following the Raith Rovers match and the semi final?

Or the BBC that hushed up the loyalist riots the day after the Referendum?

Or the BBC that allowed a bigot to feed Nevin lies about us singing sectarian songs?

Or the BBC that takes licence money from Scots and spends it on English and Welsh clubs?

Or the BBC who talk about Rangers being demoted?

That’s the BBC which gets an image of a bloke in San Siro with a flare and can’t wait to revel in the punishment that they hope to see imposed on Celtic.
