Intoxicating in the Cup

431

Buckie is a long way from Glasgow in every sense.  It is part of the Westminster constituency of Moray, which has Douglas Ross as its MP (he draws a salary from both UK and Scottish parliaments, as well as the SFA).  It’s a farmin’, fishin’ and perhaps foulin’ (apols. P Lynott) community which has planned a day out in the big city to see Buckie Thistle take on Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

Thistle wear green and white hoops, a tradition apparently established when Celtic donated a set of strips last century.  Celtic were their opponents of choice to celebrate their centenary and travelled north four decades ago to play a church fundraiser.  The Grotto needs help too, you know, Celtic!

They currently sit fifth in the Highland League, but a Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park is the equivalent of Champions League qualification; more money will pour into the Buckie coffers than has ever been seen in the Lanarkshire equivalent.

Their claims to fame might stop there were it not for Stephen King, one of the top selling fiction authors in history, referencing the club in a recent novel, then posing for this photo in team top and scarf.  King knew nothing about the club but chose it because of “it’s gorgeous name”.  Club brand mangers everywhere take note, Lanliq United is still available.

If Celtic don’t progress into the next round of the Cup on Sunday evening, even an intoxicant like Lanny will not be enough to soften the blow.  Safe journey to the estimated 5,000 on pilgrimage to Celtic Park.

You should probably meet with An Tearmann

He will verify if you’re tim or have no wisdom (&) teeth

Actually, would like to see that happen

Sheriff Tearmann usually has a spy on who is a tim and who has no teeth or wisdom

  8. AULDHEID,

Read back last night and acted on your post/links about contacting MSPs regarding the reform of Scottish Football (or, let’s face it, mainly the SFA).

I actually know a couple of the MSPs who popped up in my link search, one of them being a Tory Central Scotland List MSP who (and I find it incredulous that I can write this) is a really nice guy. On more than one occasion I’ve asked him “Are you sure you’re a Tory?”.

Anyway, popped off the emails and await a positive outcome.

As always thanks so much for your time and valiant efforts – GFTB may have something in his view that so many don’t really care, (I’ve spent a few hours over the years at half time trying to distract myself from the elements in the open North Stand Lower by trying to discuss Res 12 with surrounding sceptics), but that doesn’t mean we should just give up. That’s what the Hun and various interested parties want.

Celtic, Celtic thats the team for me,

    Celtic, Celtic on to victory,

They’re the finest team in Scotland, I’m sure you will agree,

We’ll never give up till we’ve won the cup and the scottish football league.

They come from bonnie Scotland, they come from county Cork,

They come from dear old Donegal and even from New York,

From every street in Glasgow they proudly make their way,

To a place called dear old paradise and this is what they say.

There’s Fallon, Young and Gemmell who proudly wear the green,

There’s Clark, McNeill and Kennedy the best there;s ever been,

Jim Johnstone, Murdoch, Chalmers, John Divers and John Hughes,

And sixty thousand Celtic fans who proudly shout the news.

  10. Good win for St Pauli yesterday. Getting back on track. Hoping Hertha can follow up on beating rangers last week with a result v Düsseldorf today. Düsseldorf in 4th are in striking distance of St Pauli and play then at home next week when Hamburg in 3rd play Furth who are 5th.

Holstein Kiel (2nd) losing surprisingly yesterday at home really was a good result. It looks set to be a 4 team shoot out for the top 2 guaranteed promo slots. That said Hertha and Schalke really should be capable of a run in the final 16 games.

The bug issue for St Pauli is loss of players to Afcon / Asia and injury. The next few weeks are critical.

  11. For Buckie`s sake, I would have loved a big crowd for today`s game but lousy weather and a 4 pm Sunday KO have probably put paid to that.

On the positive side, my 106 seat would normally lead to me getting soaked but a small crowd means that I will probably be able to find a seat sheltered from the rain !

PS What is Buckie`s Away strip?
