Intoxicating in the Cup

431

Buckie is a long way from Glasgow in every sense.  It is part of the Westminster constituency of Moray, which has Douglas Ross as its MP (he draws a salary from both UK and Scottish parliaments, as well as the SFA).  It’s a farmin’, fishin’ and perhaps foulin’ (apols. P Lynott) community which has planned a day out in the big city to see Buckie Thistle take on Celtic in the Scottish Cup.

Thistle wear green and white hoops, a tradition apparently established when Celtic donated a set of strips last century.  Celtic were their opponents of choice to celebrate their centenary and travelled north four decades ago to play a church fundraiser.  The Grotto needs help too, you know, Celtic!

They currently sit fifth in the Highland League, but a Scottish Cup tie at Celtic Park is the equivalent of Champions League qualification; more money will pour into the Buckie coffers than has ever been seen in the Lanarkshire equivalent.

Their claims to fame might stop there were it not for Stephen King, one of the top selling fiction authors in history, referencing the club in a recent novel, then posing for this photo in team top and scarf.  King knew nothing about the club but chose it because of “it’s gorgeous name”.  Club brand mangers everywhere take note, Lanliq United is still available.

If Celtic don’t progress into the next round of the Cup on Sunday evening, even an intoxicant like Lanny will not be enough to soften the blow.  Safe journey to the estimated 5,000 on pilgrimage to Celtic Park.

Love the silver lining you identified.

Like you I really do hope we get a decent turn out.

Even a half full stadium would be good.

I also appreciate Aulheids effort (& the other 3 ReS12 bhoys) and I think they have actually made a massive difference in the spotlight they have put in the SFA, it was never about old or new Rangers or the Celtic board it was always about the governance of Scottish Footbal (SFA) … but in my opinion Celtic as in just the football is 95% of people’s interest … am really nervous today, not about the game I am panicking about MissGFTB going to the game without me, she is buzzing for it … I now understand why my parents used to worry … even though I was 8 when I went on my own, funnily enough my parents thought I was going to Cliftonhill and not Celtic park … I now wonder why they thought an 8yr old going to Albion Rovers with his pals was acceptable 😂 😂 changed days indeed …

Any Celtic win will do … although a good few goals would be good

    Great silver lining there.

Hope we get a decent turn out even around 30000 would be good I reckon.

Cup runs where you go to every game always feel the best.

  4. Soft spot for Buckie since running the 2006 NY Marathon when there was a Buckie Fan playing the bagpipes and wearing his hoops at mile 21 or so. Just as the race enters Harlem.

I hailed the guy as Dundee Utd had beaten the Huns that day and my pal had text me the result a few miles earlier. Only to see it was Buckie hoops and not ours.

The randomness of it kept me going for the next few miles up to the entrance to Central Park ! Always watched for their scores since then.

A few other folks ran NY that day. Des McKeown, Peter Martin (Maguire) and a certain Lance Armstrong. Not sure Lance got the bagpipe playing hoops thing mind you.

Hope your wee grandson enjoys the step up to 11s today. Great times going to watch him I imagine. So good you can enjoy them.

I still go to watch my lad play on a Saturday whenever the hoops are not playing at CP. A cold dreich day yesterday, first day back my holiday and I was out there.

It was never a thing in my day for my parents to come along to watch. I think it’s great to give a bit of encouragement and see them enjoy. Even better if they have talent like it sounds your grandson has.

  6. Celtic really need to deal better with the TV companies re live games, and get a better deal for the paying fans, specifically the ones who need to travel long distances, I dare say our Irish fans can’t get ferries to suit, and guys who need to try and get trains after 7 on a Sunday.

  7. Prestonpans bhoys on

Wearing my 1996 bumble bee 🐝, top, well can’t wear the Hoops would cause confusion 😅🤣😂

  8. Getting ready to head to the game now. Can’t believe there has been no hint of the game being called off. It’s blowing a Houlie down here and storm Isha hasn’t even started yet. Mrs S has me dressed as Nanook of the North with a survival pack for the journey. Excitement building for grandson’s wee pal who has never been to Celtic Park before, so another convert on the way. He’s thrilled beyond words and no matter the size of the crowd he’ll be a Celt forever now.

Hope you all have a magical day 🍀

When ma wee yin was buying tickets online she shouts through to me “dad what section are the Green Brigade in, we want to be near them” no politics just an attraction for the youngsters

  10. GFTB at 12:14

Yep, I got “Will the Green Brigade be there? Do you know any of them?”

    As if……..

it’s not just Scotland – manure travel to Bournemouth for a 4.30 kick off a 500 mile round trip.

And there’s no trains after the game finishes.

The TV companies don’t give a toss about fans attending games

Hope the wee guy enjoys his day, point his gaze at the ‘tunnel’ he’ll not forget the first time he sees The Hoops emerge, – what a time to be alive?

I know I haven’t forgotten, back then it really was a grey Glasgow a concrete tunnel you’ll recall, that ran down the enclosure or front stand as is. Everything was black n’ white in memory but that riot of colour, the emerald green and white that was the brightest thing I’d ever seen.

A sensation that lasts a lifetime.

The SFSA represent supporters of all clubs, enough of whom care enough to act for change.

The Celtic support care enough to moan about referees but do not care enough to do something about them.

I first got on the SFA reform horse in 2010. mainly because of the constant moaning about referees in the season of honest mistakes on CQN.

Perhaps moaning when we lose is part of the enjoyment.

No one enjoyed the season we lost 10iar.

No one enjoys Celtic failing because of recruitment failings.

At least if the underlying corruption Celtic allow because not enough supporters care is addressed by SFA oversight, then if we do lose it will because we lost fairly.

Two roles for a Scottish football regulator could be.

    1. The ability to check club Licencing applications where one is granted. That uses FSR without another domestic layer.

2 Ombudsman. An authority supporters can write to with authority yo get answers. Complaints about anything including referees get addressed instead of binned.

If progress depended on everyone caring, we would still think rubbing sticks to light a fire was more enjoyable than creating matches.

  14. Game must be in doubt – ferries officially aff here and massive deterioration in weather – pitch might be ok but travelling will become dangerous- really feel for Buckie and their fans if this happens.

This afternoon’s game takes me back to this game in 1964 versus Eyemouth United.

    Review

Eyemouth started well and their defense protected the goal well. With over half an hour gone and no sign of a goal the home fans began to show their unease and disenchantment. On the restart, Turner had a header off the bar then in a neat move Johnstone fired over a corner right on the head of Chalmers who easily headed home. The goal spurred Celtic on and though Eyemouth failed to buckle the Celtic attacks were now looking more menacing. Turner had a shot cleared off the line. Gallacher got a second goal with a header of 68 minutes. Chalmers got a third goal ten minutes later.

    Teams

Important traffic info, we’ve been advised the slip road on the M8 at Blochairn is currently closed, this is the on and off slip so will have an impact pre and post match this afternoon

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. Waiting on the rest of the old brigade. Think they must have been ambushed at the Queens Park Cafe. 🤔

  18. The Met Office have issued an AMBER weather warning for very strong winds ahead of Storm Isha arriving tomorrow, Sunday, 21 January. Winds of 70-80mph are expected in places, which could blow trees and other large items on to the railway.

As a result of this, we will end services early from 19:00 on Sunday night on all routes outside the Central Belt, as well as services to/from Fife, Borders, Maryhill, East Kilbride and Kilmarnock. A limited service will run on the remaining Central Belt lines, but journeys will take longer as trains will be limited to 40mph for safety reasons.

If you want to make a difference, then contact your MSP to get them to be part of the debate…

    ____

I emailed my MSP last week and would encourage everyone to do likewise. No point in moaning if you don’t take the opportunity to do something tangible now.

  21. Auldheid 12.52pm

As per usual you are 100% correct, it might come across at times that I disagree with you, nothing can be further from the truth, I just don’t think the “appetite” is there from the majority of our support, maybe “we” like officialdom being against us

Keep the good fight going … you have opened the eyes of far more than you realise …

Am watching my kid leaving for the lunch theme Celtic park … she is just interested in the football and doesn’t care a jot about SFA, referees or any version of the Huns is just Celtic for her and the majority of the fans

  22. Gerry, I get it. My grand daughters (not my grandsons, EEK!) are fitba daft and I will never forget their introduction to ra Celtic when MRS EMERALDBEE and myself took them along to see Celtic rout the current league leaders at the time, Kilmarnock. Every goal they were up cheering then booing when Killie got the penalty they hoped would get them back in to the game. And ALL the goals were scored right in front of us.

How they loved the stadium, the colours, the noise. A love affair started that day for both of them (but I doubt, though now teenagers, they have any interest in the FTSFA!)

  23. On the subject of bringing through academy players it appears the old ‘academy of football’ at West Ham hasn’t delivered a first team starter in 4 years.

  24. EMERALDBEE \O/ A DOUBLE NINER!!

Thanks for contacting you MSP .

SFSA have brought the horses to the well.

The choice to drink or not lies with them.

On GTFBs point it’s not so much not caring but not knowing.

The PO scandal has existed for years but it took a TV programme to make enough folk aware to put focus on the issue.

Every letter to MSPs , some of whom will not be aware of the issues, brings focus.

    Thank again.

Not a chance tv would sanction that programme, I still think only reason HMRC went for the old Huns because they knew of Mr Whytes previous “liquidations” … Mr Bates v the Post Office … I would love too see “Mr Auldheid v the Scottish Establishment”

one of the things i like about cup games is the obscure kick off times.

it’s not just Scotland – manure travel to Bournemouth for a 4.30 kick off a 500 mile round trip.

    not a great example

    bournemouths ground holds 11000

away team get about 1500 tickets if they are lucky

there will likely be 1500 man u fans who live within a few mile radius of bournemouths ground who would gladly take the tickets

and a bit like the 750 ibrox ticket debate – virtually all of man utds tickets for that game will go to staff, fat cats and sponsors

  29. lets all do the huddle on

and its liverpool that are at bournemouth today but exactly the same points are relevant
