It’s all about the money

909

There is no point bleating that tonight’s Europa League final is the weakest imaginable, Newco are there because they are good enough to eliminate two German sides and a few weaker opponents.  If they win, fair play to them, they deserve their day in the sun.  I expect them to lose.

Either way, the outcome will determine relative financial strength in Scottish football.  This season Newco will return an operating profit for the first time in their history.  Sales of Patterson to Everton and the management team to Aston Villa, already ensured a bumper year.  The run to a European final could make them the highest earners in Scotland, eclipsing Celtic in this regard for the first time.  It will bestow no more than a stay of execution to a side with gaping structural deficiencies.

The importance of Celtic winning the league this season cannot be overstated.  Irrespective of what happens across the city, access to Champions League income ensures our place at the top of the income chart is virtually assured next season.  If we are there alone from Scotland, the benefits Newco gain from this season will seem no more than a dead cat bounce.  If two clubs are there, we compete on equal terms, against a team spending from income, not debt.

It’s all about the money, nothing else determines long-term outcomes.

    BELMONT BRIAN

I was diagnosed with asthma after one doctors appointment about 20 years ago.

Two inhalers provided, one to be used twice a day, the other if I had breathing difficulties.

I never had a serious episode, but continued with the daily inhalers for years.

Some years ago I queried my condition with my doc who set me up with the resident nurse to have a Spirometry Test. No issues evident so asthma was struck from my records and inhalers binned.

Uncanny similarity to my diagnosis and medication PB.

…I seemed to have an issue with “exercise induced asthma” and the doctor put me on an inhaler — basic version but can’t remember the name.

Uncanny Pt 2; likewise diagnosed with exercise induced asthma MM

As Philhoy said, the spirometry test 3 yrs ago suggests no asthma/damage to lung capacity. Have noticed that when it’s damp + cold, the lung linings play up but I can run around/cycle with no impact.

For record, I’ve never won a Tour De anything,

The funny thing is, that’s not the first time I’ve mentioned this suggestion on here.

I did it years ago when the board was a different place. Many would say a better place.

The suggestion was greated more favourably then. It was discussed with interest and without rancour or ridicule.

It’s not even my idea. I originally heard it suggest by Wiggy Smith, of whom I am no fan, but I thought it an interesting proosal.

You maybe don’t remember that. Your memory doesn’t appear to be the most reliable (might be an age thing). Or maybe it was before you joined the board.

  24. US Soccer equal-pay deal could ‘change game globally’ – https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61492703

    ——–

I have posted twice in the last twelve months about the impact that the womens’ game will have on football worldwide.

I said I believed that it would change the structure of the game to a degree that would make Bosman seem almost irrelevant. I also highlighted that it was the US who would be in the vanguard and that discrimination law in all countries would be used to drive the changes quicker and wider than anyone could imagine.

I recently posted an e-mail answer to a question on the timing of full equality in Scotland that I put to the SWP after it was announced that it would be under the full SPFL umbrella from next season:

SWP – “It is difficult to put an exact timescale on achieving equality. However SWF will continue to work with senior clubs, the Scottish FA and SPFL to achieving equality within football for all.”

The right to play womens’ International matches at Hampden, the national stadium, with equal pay has all been agreed. Now with womens’ teams part of the SPFL, this will filter down to club level over time – how long will this take to be implemented? Celtic women have, I believe, played at least one match at Celtic Park, so the process at our club has begun, albeit tentatively. Could the pitch at Celtic Park sustain double the number of games played on it each season?

What will all this mean in the long-run to Celtic and other clubs with an ‘in-house’ womens’ team? Could it ultimately result in an equal 50/50 split in all club revenue & sponsirship between both squads, and if resisted, would it be challenged in the courts as discrimitory?

The equality snowball is now descending the slope and is getting bigger on every turn – sooner, or, later, clubs will need to ‘nail their colours to the mast’…. it’s not going away.

The US decision you linked changes very little for Celtic. It is the same decision, now actualised, that was being discussed by US authorities last time you tried to raise a scare.

The outcome now is that US national teams have to be treated equally; International US Male players will earn the same paltry sums that US women earn. No US soccer club is obligated to pay their women’s club team the same wages while they attract crowds of less than a tenth of what the men get. The New York Yankees will not be obliged to pay their women’s softball outfit multi-million dollar salaries, nor will the Boston Celtics or the Baltimore Ravens have to do so in their sport.

You were told this back then but you conveniently forget in your effort to promote scare stories.

You have been a troll since day one.

P.S. I fully support equality in sport in terms of access and encouragement of female participation but commercial sport is not bound to pay the same wages to Partick Thistle men’s team and their women’s team any more than Albion Rovers mens team will get the same wages as Celtic men’s team.

  28. Speakin money and football, viewing one of the Celtic podcasts on utube it came as a bit shock that should Rangers2 win tonight and qualify for the Champion’s Lge. it would reduce Celtic’s take by 5 million on account of two Scottish clubs being in the group stage. If they become a pot one team it’s quite possible we could draw them in our group.
