It’s only a flesh wound. King goes Full Python

1151

Celtic hammered Newco 5-1 home and away last season, knocked them out both cups, won one other game and conceded a late equaliser, allowing Newco their only moment of (cough) glory last season.

We finished 39 points ahead of Newco (who were 33 points from bottom). As we set off for the summer, glowing after the first invincible treble in history, chairman of Newco, that complete muppet Dave King, told the assembled media, “In footballing terms I don’t think Celtic are as far ahead as they could have been – certainly with our new signings.”

The two 5-1 defeats now look like Python’s Black Knight losing his legs one at a time, but protesting they were little more than flesh wounds. Except Python was a parody, this guy is being serious!

So, Brendan, Peter, Dermot, get the finger out. These people don’t believe 5-1 is a substantial enough winning margin. When we pitch up at Ibrox on the weekend of 23/24 September, ‘go Medieval on their ass’ to borrow from Quentin.

Take five minutes to update yourself on The Road to Lisbon cyclists, who traveled from Celtic Park to Estadio Nacional last month.

This has been a phenomenal and inspiring effort by a group of Celtic fans – and so many donors.  What a great thing to be a part of.

  1. It doesn’t make sense for Celtic to agree to change the date of the fixture and then not take tickets.

I can only assume that it’s Linfield who want the date changed to avoid a diary clash for their fans and officials.

    TTR – 100% correct.

Why agree to switch the game day then?

    —–

I would imagine the PSNI resources would be stretched with the marching season and what have you so the proposal to move the game would take that into account as well as perhaps an initial idea that Celtic fans could travel over when things settle down a bit. Obviously Celtic have kiboshed at least part of that idea.

Mags is correct, there is not a penny to be made from the away leg. We well know the PLC put money above all else in their decision making process. So no Celtic fans in Belfast incase we rock the boat with the cash cow that is UEFA.

Hamiltontim, its looking good for the OBaF to be revoked this year.

No doubt FOCUS will be ramping it up next season to get as much overtime as possible before their cash cow is no more.

While I’m totally in favour of repealing that Act-which should never have been passed into law in the first place-it might be worth remembering one of the main objections to it.

That existing laws,if enforced properly, were perfectly adequate.

The SNP’s pet academic, Dr. Duncan Morrow, is guaranteed to provide the narrative that sectarianism is “all that Ulster thing” and involves two Glasgow clubs only.

It keeps the heat off all other forms forms of sectarianism, especially anti-nglish sentiment, which does not play as well.

There is an appetite to punish football, the “hooligan’s game”, and there is no appetite to look at real sectarianism.

Bobby, I agree the law in pace prior to OBaF was more than adequate to deal with bigotry.

I’m pleased OBaF is on the way out . Like most Celtic supporting parents with sons in their late teens and early twenties , our concern would be them getting lifted for hee haw or some trumped up charge which could affect their future prospects.

I reckon the club have bought themselfs a fine at least from uefa due to them not taking any tickets, the GB will shirly have a banner that will incur a fine due to this.

  9. Not for the first time do I hear the sound of ‘His Master’s Voice’ on here. I’m guessing actually providing tickets to Celtic supporters looking forward to the possibility of playing Linfield in Belfast, could be seen to damage our corporate image. Despite our host Paul personally carrying out a far seeing reconnoitre in ol Belfast town, the powers that be have ruled that it is too dangerous to allow Celtic supporters to support our club. If we as a club are not happy about being in the same draw as Linfield, why not come out and say we will not play in Belfast, not now not ever. Or would that be taking too principled a stand?

Celtic have made the correct decision.

Belfast is a murderous city at that time and even though there may be a route to get to Windsor Park, avoiding the worst of it, two or three thousand Celtic fans in the city is not a risk worth taking.

This is not about bravado of taking our chances.

Peoples lives could be at stake, plus Celtic’s tarnished reputation in UEFA.

Days surrounding the Twelfth are days when you leave the place to them.

Many wise Belfast citizens leave town at that time.

So, we suffer a sporting disadvantage, and we have effectively banned our own fans from watching the team in Europe, because Linfield and the cops cannot guarantee their safety due to a bigotfest going on?

That is appalling. Win-win for Linfield.

There will be Celtic supporters at the Belfast game. There are supporters everywhere and every time we play. This has just ramped up the likelihood of trouble a hundredfold.

I just cannot get my head around how we can ban our own fans instead of insisting that, if safety can’t be guaranteed, the Belfast fixture must be played at a neutral venue.

Oh, and here’s your ticket allocation for the return leg. Would you like a wee drink while you’re waiting?

Safety of away fans is Linfield’s basic responsibility, and we are being penalised, FFS!

I am truly appalled at this – it’s got the capacity to go very wrong.

  15. I wonder how many of those of us who were in the Estadio National can recall the moment when a guy threw a ball on to the field and then climbed over the moat and started to show us his ‘fancy foot work’. Many of those present shouted to him to get off the pitch. He was doing exactly what Jim had asked us not to do – ‘go on the pitch’ as he had agreed that this would be the case because the football authorities there had conceded so much to us as they prepared for the Portuguese Cup Final. (By the way, I am not talking about those who were given permission to scatter ashes of loved ones.) My point in bring this up is that no matter how well we behave, there is always the chance that one guy will think only of himself and not the rest of us. That is my fear for the Linfield game in the six counties.

Some have said we would be safe when we got into the republican areas of the city. Would we be safe on the road from Larne? Were we not attacked on a previous occasions when buses were travelling on to Dublin? It is not as simple as some are suggesting.

The media have played their part in this, they ignore the racism towards the Irish Catholics, in fact they fan the flames by telling the world we are as bad as each other.

The troubles in the north hasn’t helped either, but if the club are wanting to be seen to be above the sectarianism and the like they, silence is not the way to go about it.

UEFA’S views on Celtic have been clearly set out with the frequent injustices they have done to our club.

The Man city game were an OB match observer from Northern Ireland wrote a jaundiced report on only one set of fans was readily accepted despite contradictory tv evidence.

The huns at the sfa have planted their likeminded fellow Scots in UEFA for decades and we have borne the brunt of these OB’s jaundiced views.

Would UEFA’s stance have been to turn a blind eye if Celtic had tried even a fraction of the cheating they let the Huns get away with.

UEFA is a corrupt entity but the Scottish huns placement within makes it even more sinister.

    ——————————————————-

That doesn’t explain the switching of the fixture to the Friday.

Celtic stated that they wouldn’t be accepting ticket allocation because of concern over supporter safety.

    Why change the date?

Did the PSNI tell Celtic that they couldn’t guarantee the safety of a coach full of players and officials on 11th or 12th July?

If so – Who’s problem is that?

    It definitely isn’t ours.

Celtic should have told the PSNI and Linfield to take it up with UEFA.

If those respective parties cannot guarantee the safety of our players, then you move the fixture to an alternative suitable venue, which is capable of hosting the game on the date it is due to be played.

    It doesn’t add up.

  23. At the end of the day this is of UEFA’s making and if you think they actually care whether Celtic or Linfield progress to the next round then think again. We might be a massive club globally but we are just like the rest of the clubs that come from countries with small populations and ’viewing’ numbers, we are considered cannon fodder by UEFA for the teams from countries with large populations.

Sure we have reputedly the best atmosphere in Europe and everybody wants to play at Celtic Park but I feel UEFA quite frankly see us as those ‘pesky kids’ from Scooby Doo who like to foil the bad guys. They’d probably prefer we didn’t qualify.

Yes it is all about money and I’m afraid modern football has developed into a Mammon Monster so much so I tend not to watch it as much as I used to. I’m quite a strong socialist but anybody who doesn’t believe that any football club’s bottom line is their prime objective is quite frankly living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

There are strong arguments on both sides for the fans being there and for not being there but I’m afraid the Club will look after its bottom line. After all I’m sure Brendan and the team are not at Celtic purely because of you and me. If the package wasn’t right they would be somewhere else.

  24. What a fickle bunch we are, the fans are seriously unhappy at the club refusing tickets for a game that could be a powder keg, yet they are happy to let the club say feck all when the sfa cheat and steal from us with total impunity.

As i stated earlier yes there is no money to be made in this game. From a PLC perspective there is a huge amount of money to be lost via UEFA in a number of ways if UEFA blame Celtic for any Linfield trouble which, based on their record vis a vis Celtic, of course they will. Not suprised the PLC are bricking it.

I normally dont like players bigging themselves or the club up with how they will win. It often comes back to bite you in the ass. But, sometimes, loud mouth liars/bullies like King have to be put in their place. So, I will admit that I smiled when I read Leigh Griffith’s response to the Lying King:

“What was the gulf? 30-odd points. How does he expect that to be bigger? They were touting at the start of last season that they were going to win the league and this and that.

“Joey Barton was coming up and saying he was going to be the best player in Scotland – he lasted a few months. In the first [Old Firm] game, they got hammered 5-1 and they got hammered 5-1 at the end of the season. So, the gulf couldn’t be any bigger. This season, they’ll be trying to bridge the gap.

“Ultimately it’s about what we do and if we are at our best nobody in Scotland can live with us.”

respect, Leigh. Wish those running our Club would show as much passion or guts.
