Jack-of-all-trades

1699

I was initially surprised to hear we’re tracking a Jack-of-all-trades defensive midfielder-cum-central defender.  Neil Lennon’s clear preference in central defence is Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have been in excellent form this season, but he has backup in the form of Charlie Mulgrew, or even Mikael Lustig, who has played there before.

Defensive midfield, along with striker, is one of the key positions Celtic should be looking to strengthen; so a dedicated specialist would seem the better option, but our last outstanding specialist in that area arrived with exactly the same CV.  I remember the disputes here when Neil Lennon talked about Victor Wanyama being able to play centre half.  He could, but he didn’t.

It’s more important that we do our recon well than utilise everything in a player’s locker.  Buying from England is usually expensive, but at least if affords you the opportunity to solicit plenty of reliable opinion on a player.

We can disagree without falling out ;-)

Strangely, the only criticism of the GB’s banner that I’ve seen has been on here or Twitter. Every individual around me at the game and every Tim I’ve spoken to since thought it to be an intelligent and poignant attempt to highlight the hypocrisy of the OBFA.

You could say that the GB deliberately misled the board OR you could say that the GB were clever in their interpretation of the agreed dialogue.

Personally, I don’t think it matters. The GB were right to highlight continual harassment and my biggest gripe is that the board haven’t backed Celtic supporters in their attempt to do so. In fact they’ve done the opposite.

    ================

If you mean the banner for which UEFA fined Celtic a good few thousand quid then how would you feel if you had a barbecue in Square Sausage Land where round sausages, whilst acceptable in other areas, were not allowed in gardens for barbecue purposes?

For some strange reason, round sausages, whilst acceptable in any other environment were against the law of Square Sausage Land and so outlawed.

All of your guests know this and agree that whilst the law is an ass they will only bring square sausages. But a couple of guests, for political round sausage reasons because they have been part of their long tradition, decide to bring round sausages and not just any sausages but Mark & Spencers finest round.

The round sausage police or FOCU S as they are know locally decide to pay a call and on seeing the round sausages on the barbecue grill arrest you and you are fined £40k plus.

The thing about the banner for which Celtic were fined is that Celtic did not pay that fine, you did and I did, all paying supporters paid a share.

Back in your garden you would feel more than a little indignant at your reputation for holding excellent square sausage barbecues being damaged, but you would be more than fizzing at the fine that your wayward guests had inflicted on you. I imagine if your other guests had to chip in to pay the fine they to would be smoking if not blazing mad.

Therein lies the problem around all of this. No group should take unilateral decisions that have an impact on the rest of the group, particularly financial but also reputational. This is were the GB imo made a huge error of judgement, which I can put down to the foolishness of youth, but if they are to grow out of that foolishness they have to experience and go through the consequences.

Nothing trains and develops and individual like a bad experience.

(No sausages, round or square (or even links for that matter) were hurt in the making of this analogy.)

    and

HT – glad to hear you had a great day, mate.

I have to disagree with you about the GB tifo before the Milan game. It may have been a good point about the OBFB, but the message was always going to be lost as soon as a picture of Bobby Sands was displayed.

Most of the guys around me in 408, who are not regulars/lurkers on here, were hacked off with the GB for doing that before a CL game. And that was before we found out about yet another UEFA fine! What’s the running total at the moment, that has been paid for by Celtic fans, mostly through season card money?

IMO the GB lost a lot of support that night, before the events at Fir Park.

Incidentally, I agree that the club should now make it known in the MSM that none of the fans arrested after Fir Park were GB members. I would then hope to see a new dialogue established between the various fans groups and the club, with the SLO as mediator.

At the risk of being told I have skelves on my arse or that I am a total tosser can I point something out which everyone and anyone is free to disagree with.

Jeanette Findlay, Peter Lawell and any other Tom, Dick, Harry or Shirley who sits on the board or is a secretary of a supporters club or whatever — they are all Celtic fans!

They may come from opposing philosophies, they will hold different positions, feel they have different responsibilities, have conflicting priorities, are answerable to different people or perhaps none at all, have different attributes and failings, be under different pressures … whatever.

Personally, I cannot understand a “them” and “us” mentality — there is only “us” when following or even administering Celtic.

There are plenty of things I would do differently to PL and I would have a differenet advocacy style to JF — and no doubt they would say the same about me.

I know there are those who don’t like Jeanette’s style or even her politics, but I have always found her to be pleasant, forthright, sometimes funny, and down to earth — she has also been known to listen which astonishes some.

I find her good company although I don’t know her that well.

For the record I think Eddie Toner is a gem.

I have only met Peter Lawell once– perhaps twice if you include a brief chat in passing — and I do not envy him his job — no matter what the salary.

Like Jeanette, I found him straightforward, and easy to agree and disagree with in equal measure. He has a job to do and does it his way– which I don’t always agree with.

Someone else who sits on the Celtic administration side of things has said to me that they find Jeanette — and other members of the Celtic Trust — a joy to deal with. They don’t always agree but there appears to be no personal ill feeling and considerable respect.

feelings will run high re the act and Celtic’s take on the act — personally I think the club has taken a wrong turn with the act and the Police– but it is a turn that is understandable given the reliance the club place on certain club employees who are just not best equipped to challenge or adapt to certain attitudes and policies which have been adopted by the authorities.

I say again, the one thing I totally disagreed with Fergus McCann on was the decision to go down the PLC route — That decision could still yet turn out to be a disaster for Celtic Football Club — but in the interim the board are not the worst yet fall short of being the best.

What we need both within and outwith the walls of power at Celtic park is good old fashioned Savvy — Savvy in dealing with fans, Savvy in dealing with the authorities and most of all Savvy in dealing with that strangest of things ……. people — and that includes one another by the way.

When we arrived at the stadium in Seville under an hour before kick off we phoned one of our mates who was working inside the stadium suited and booted. He was complaining about the heat and commented that the players might find it hard going as he had just been told the temperature at pitch level in the shade was 35 degrees C.

When we got in to the park there was no water left for sale in our section. After the game ended we waited in the bus park for over an hour waiting for lost souls and gasping for a beer but any rehydration would have been fine, when a hooped figure in the distance carrying large bottles of water caught my eye. When I marched over and asked where to go to get the water he said no chance mate these were some of the last the shop had and the queue was massive. When I offered to buy one to share round the guys on the coach he said forget it you’re having a laugh if you think I am taking money off you big man. Just take one he said and buy me a beer next time you see me. Probably sums up the spirit of Seville. Never saw him again to buy him the beer but the water hit the spot with the bhoys.

  23. Celtic Park had a great atmosphere on Saturday. It is a much better atmosphere when the four stands get involved in the singing rather than leaving it to one wee section.

Is it just coincidence that some mouthpieces have been mobilised this weekend just in case majority started to forget about the wee section.

All Celtic fans are equal done are more important than the other. There are many wee sections in Celtic Park it’s only when we come together as one that we are so special.
