I was initially surprised to hear we’re tracking a Jack-of-all-trades defensive midfielder-cum-central defender. Neil Lennon’s clear preference in central defence is Efe Ambrose and Virgil van Dijk, both of whom have been in excellent form this season, but he has backup in the form of Charlie Mulgrew, or even Mikael Lustig, who has played there before.
Defensive midfield, along with striker, is one of the key positions Celtic should be looking to strengthen; so a dedicated specialist would seem the better option, but our last outstanding specialist in that area arrived with exactly the same CV. I remember the disputes here when Neil Lennon talked about Victor Wanyama being able to play centre half. He could, but he didn’t.
It’s more important that we do our recon well than utilise everything in a player’s locker. Buying from England is usually expensive, but at least if affords you the opportunity to solicit plenty of reliable opinion on a player.

I see that BBC Scotland is to cover the tie of the round, Thems v Dunfermline, in the 4th round of the Cup. Another timely boost to their beleagured finances. On a Friday night too.
If Dunfermline win, Police Scotland will be very busy in Glasgow.

If I am not mistaken Terry Cooper and Norman Hunter had a similar conversation during the SF 2nd leg at Hampdump in 1970, as Jinky ran riot.
I was there as a pimply 16 year old.
What a night!
HH!!
Bobby,
That deserved a cymbal crash lol
Willie Henderson DID indeed reach the heights that Jinky never did.
Henderson was 5′ 5 and a half inches.
Jinky was only 5′ 5″.

Just after the boavista booing of NFL there was an open training session at which the player totally ignored the kids that had come to see them . The only exception was john hartson
just watched a programme about Garrincha who played on the right for Brazil back in the days when Pele was just breaking through.
Garrincha was a bit like JJ only more explosive . He had legs that pointed in different directions and one was a couple of inches shorter. The clips of him in action are amazing.
He was wayard character off the field too – he drank and chased women -to extreme.
He would ask his teammate in the tunnel just before kick-off “who are we playing today?”
When he was told he would say “Oh I thought it was Santos” Then he would go out a tear the opposition apart. He didnt last long after he stopped playing . His life style caught up with him.
At least he was in my general vacinity the rest of them are like wee bhoys in comparison to me.

Fat Sally has told his players that they will definitely be in a European competition this year.
Even if he has to write the song himself.
Sally, if you’re lurking;
Administration then Liquidation
The whole world now knows we’re as skint as can be.
Administration then Liquidation
So the SPL sent us down to Division three!!
Well, he looks like he could use a hand!

In regards to Garrincha, that is shall we say putting it mildly.
What a character.
Not saying for good or bad. But what a character.
Bamboo.
He had a third leg too or so the rumour goes. Probably Scottish ancestors somewhere in his family tree.
I believe he died a nobody but was buried a somebody after Brazil developed a conscience about the treatment of one of its all time greats.
Garincha- the little bird.
You couldn’t make this one up if you tried……
Rainjurz Meeja feckwit poster praising Private Eye and saying such a publication makes him proud to be British.(they have published an article on Celtic’s land deals with GCC in the latest issue).
The same publication he described as a Taig Infested piece of Scum, when it printed an article about Craig Whyte , two years ago.

Lol, ffs, I was 23.
Talksport have banned links/ reference to Twitter on all their sports platforms following racial abuse and death threats made to Stan Collymore.
Afternoon all
The Huns on FF think Willie Henderson was better than wee Jimmy. Well there is a surprise. Both great players but I don’t think even wee Willie himself thought he was better than Jinky.
Jimbo67 supporting Oscar Knox
Garrincha is Brazilian for wren apparently . It was his nick-name because because he used to shoot them!!
Jinky v Willie
Both born in 1944
Willie was an international and established at Rangers at 18. Until he was 22 he could fairly be described as having an outstanding domestic and european career to that date and the future seemed to promise only more of the same. An exciting talent from a stable successful club.
Jimmy at 20 was a regular but not established Celtic player and earned his first cap. At 21 he was in a team apparently going no where playing for an unsuccessful badly managed club. Even Big Jock on his return had him on a list of potential sales.
At age 23 both got to European finals (Willie’s second) but from that point on the divergence in their careers was huge. To be fair to Henderson he had fitness problems particularly with his feet but in any event Jimmy was heading to the stratosphere all on his own ability.
What Jock and success had done was add the missing ingredient to Jimmy’s game – confidence in his own ability! Willie had made his Rangers debut at 16 and confidence was something he was never short of but the number of games played and the intensity of his playing style at such tender years probably did him disservice in the longer term.
Quite simply Jimmy’s game progressed from age 23, Willie’s plateaued and then quickly regressed after 23. Now it was the Rangers’ turn to be part of an unstable poorly managed outfit.
Two great players. No Scottish player today could lace their boots. Their careers were similar but mirror image. One came under the wing of genious, one didn’t. One was great, one was an incredible superstar!

McTALL,
I keep telling you that you make a better door than you do a window!
HH from the Blizzard in Cape Cod
Last night as I lay dreamin’
Of pleasant days gone by
Me mind bein’ bent on travelin’
To Ireland I did fly
I stepped aboard a vision
and followed with my will
‘Til next I came to anchor
At the cross near Spancil Hill
Delighted by the novelty
Enchanted with the scene
Where in my early boyhood
Where often I had been
I thought I heard a murmur
And think I hear it still
It’s the little stream of water
That flows down Spancil Hill
It being the 23rd of June
The day before the fair
Where Ireland’s sons and daughters
In crowds assembled there
The young, the old, the brave and the bold
They came for sport and kill
There were jovial conversations
At the cross near Spancil Hill
I went to see my neighbours
To hear what they might say
The old ones were all dead and gone
The others turning grey
I met with tailor Quigley
He’s as bold as ever still
Sure he used to make me britches
When I lived in Spancil Hill
I paid a flying visit
To my first and only love
She’s white as any lily
And gentle as a dove
She threw her arms around me
Saying Johnny I love you still
She’s Meg the farmers daughter
And the pride of Spancil Hill
I dreamt I stooped and kissed her
As in the day of ‘ore
She said Johnny you’re only joking
As many the times before
The cock crew in the morn’
He crew both loud and shrill
And I woke in California
Many miles from Spancil Hill
Erin Go Bragh.
If my memory serves me right, I don’t think Henderson played to many evening games, something to do with his eye site contact lenses or something about floodlights not sure.

—————–
Sure it wasn’t because he was so small , with his little legs, that he used to wrestle with them..?
I saw Henderson probably a lot more than most on here.He was a great winger.Very quick, direct, great crosser of the ball.He had a very good inside right playing with him at the time,Ian Mc Millan, who fed him great passes all day long.He could turn FBs inside out.Trying to compare him to the greatest dribbler who ever lived is a total nonsense.Henderson was the prototype,Jinky was the much improved ,super deluxe model.
A lot of these huns commenting on the pair probably only spouting bias.Jinky tore them asunder time after time, scored a right few goals against them as well.Henderson was a great player, but Jinky is up there with Best,Messi,Marradonna,Ronaldo, and Pele. Each one unique.I am just blessed to have seen them all play.

Aye, great night. I was 13 and stood near the main stand side of the Celtic end, where all 3 goals were scored.
Garrincha means”Little Bird”.
I suppose they think Dave Wilson was better than Bobby Lennox.
Paul67
It’s not – ‘or even Mikael Lustig’
It’s – ‘Always Mikael Lustig’
Thank You
Ulysses McGhee Esq.
Well of course with their type of logic Boyd would be a much better player than Henrik because he has scored more goals….lol
bamboo…
Not even Davy Wilson thinks that!!!
Once again I am “peed off ” at another discussion on Celtic issues – new signings during ANOTHER transfer window being HIJACKED by the financial “cok-ups” of THEMS, however, that was until the comparisons between Willie Henderson and our “Jinky” – hay pal! oor winger’s better than your winger; ma Da’s bigger than your Da ETC – haven’t laughed so much in years.
I’m 50 so I’ve only got vague memories of both players —–
but I know someone who watched them BOTH many times over the years.
My father now 72 and who used to go to BOTH Celtic and Rangers games with friends from our little village(population 106ish with NO GLASGOW etc sectarianism whatsoever.
He’s now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina but still supports Celtic, always keeps abreast of Club News but was very upset at the demise of Rangers – as he saw them as our “main threat” etc.
I collected as many posts as I could on the Jinky v Henderson debate and emailed them to him.
Here are his observations:-
1) Both were DAMNED GOOD – the BEST in their teams and STILL good enough to be “club legends”.
2) Jinky was better because, although Willie was more DIRECT and created more assists, Jinky SCORED MORE GOALS and “PISSED OFF” more opposition players than Willie.
3) Scotland caps mean nothing when there is a BIAS towards “all things Rangers” within the SFA and choosing players – Think, son, about the BIAS in Argentina between River players and Boca players – the River bias has been there for DECADES – only until recently (the late nineties onwards) has it “more or less” stopped.
SPOT ON DAD!
And here’s one observation of my own:-
4) As far as The Maestro v Barry is concerned – you can’t use Scotland caps as a comparison there either …..
’cause Barry wasn’t called SICKNOTE for nothing.
H H
I thought Garrincha meant ‘Dark destroyer from the West, who’s very existence strikes fear into all his enemies, especially men called Fred.’

Lol, ffs, I was 23.
———————————/————////
I was a handsome 19 year old, what a night .
As far as I remember Jock Stein was OK with Jinky indulging himself by beating 2 or 3 defenders and instead of crossing the going back and beating them again.
Jock felt the opposition overloaded defenders trying to mark JJ thus leaving space and oppotunities for the many other goal scorers in the team.
