Jetsam, flotsam and aggregated insight

752

Great to see so many names from years ago back on the blog yesterday.  As well as the jetsam and flotsam of life at Celtic, there have been times when the blog has had real value to the few, and occasionally, to the many.  Once or twice, we’ve made a real difference to our club.

Our ability to add value correlates directly with the great contributions which appear here; sometimes when people offer remarkable insight, sometimes when many aggregate their thoughts to analyse an issue.

My guess is that there will be moments in the next decade when that insight and aggregation will be needed, so thanks to everyone who keeps the place sane through the flotsam days, before the biggies emerge.  Thanks also for yesterday’s enormous support.  The untold stories of acts of kindness and generosity from the community over the decade are so numerous they are no longer exceptional.  It’s a great place to be a part of.

There are changes ahead.  A new blog design is on the way and the Quick News section will retire this summer.  Canajunbhoy has exclusively posted the section in the wee small hours for the best part of the decade, so he more than deserves peace to hang up his keyboard.  My sincere thanks for all his help.

CQteN was an enormous success and built three school kitchens in Malawi for Mary’s Meals (photos from the last two are on the way).  It was also enormous fun.  We’re going to do it again, although I’m not sure yet if it has the legs to be an annual event/bi-annual or other.  Open to ideas.

I see the zombie are playing Hibees in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Is this a new trophy they can add to the hunners o’ trophies they have won in the last 2 years? Bad news for them is that Falkirk are the record holders having won the trophy 4 times.

I also see the St Pat’s v Legia game is on live on Premier Sports on Wednesday, so maybe any subscribers to said channel could give us updates?

I have “stoated” out of my sister’s house in the early hours of the morning with a view to getting into a taxi only to be accosted with the cry “BRTH I thought that was your big baw heid I recognised”!

This did not come from Voguepunter but from the redoubtable tones of Eddie Toner!

One of the things that I have been trying to say to those within Celtic Park for sometime is that the database does not just consist of Season Ticket holders or Shareholders.

I am sure that there are those within the club who are aware of that already but I really would like someone just to confirm it.

From a purely business point of view a database is one of the most valuable things you can have.

You cannot buy a single item from stores like Moss Bros and even M&S without someone taking down your details ( no tittering at the back ) so that they can add them to the database.

There are entire business surrounding the cleaning up and maintaining of a database and part of their operation and function is to sound the database out on performance, complaints, rewards and so on.

I think it had to be from the database given the spread.

Don’t mention Celtic being slow or you’ll get BRTH started :)

They are and there are different reasons for this, but with the football operations at a level of development that is bedding in, more time and money can be devoted to other business areas.

A list of hand picked names were given to JPT that’s how the gathering was assembled.

As JP was only recently back in position at Parkhead he wasn’t really in a position to know who was in charge of various organisations/associations etc so he was provided with a list of people to contact, many of whom had long held connections to Celtic.

That’s what he told me anyway.

Three years ago I had a meeting with the then CEO of what has now become the Celtic Charity Foundation.

At that point, the club were in possession of, or in the course of getting hold of, a whole series of information and detail about the demographics and social standing of the season ticket holders and the wider Celtic support.

At that time, I was told that Celtic had a higher percentage of supporters coming from a socially deprived demographic than any other club in Scotland.

Areas of deprivation has been identified and as a result this was where it was determined that the charity foundation would concentrate its efforts.

    Various initiatives have commenced since.

Other initiatives have been discussed and followed by the wayside for one reason or another. A change at the top of the tree ( a welcome change I may say ) also changed the initiative somewhat.

There are still matters that were discussed back then that I would like to see come to fruition. Matters that I know all concerned wanted to take forward but which for one reason or other have not come to pass as yet.

I am not talking about different fund raising strategies or different charity events, I am talking about completely different initiatives that highlight poverty, lack of opportunity, poor health and lifestyle choices.

Some of this was being done in partnership with educational establishments who were providing data and research as part of the programme– all with the idea of getting other bodies involved and active so that the initiative went beyond the ordinary match day punter.

Auldheid has said don’t get me started on “speed” of movement at certain levels, and while I understand as much as anyone that governance and participation by committee takes time and unity of purpose, but Dear Sweet Jesus some things turn slower than the Titanic!!

  29. Good read on blog about irish support etc

I did few day trips at the start but for me it wasnt long enough and was very tiring so i cut my trips and only went to 2/3 games a season so i could spend 2nights in glasgow.

Love the aul bands/singers so seeing them live was always part of the attraction and meeting other fans.

3years since iv been to a game but i do think if the standing section comes through and a decent fan zone then that will improve things alot.

Kerrydale bar sounds good and heard good reports from few people i know.

But its good to see celtic at least showing an interest in improving things.

Maybe free busses from a different location each week might help ? Bus from edinburgh.. Then one from motherwell etc

But i do think they need to be more honest with the fans. Stuff like res 12 , stewarding/police behaviour have no doubt put some people off.
