Jetsam, flotsam and aggregated insight

752

Great to see so many names from years ago back on the blog yesterday.  As well as the jetsam and flotsam of life at Celtic, there have been times when the blog has had real value to the few, and occasionally, to the many.  Once or twice, we’ve made a real difference to our club.

Our ability to add value correlates directly with the great contributions which appear here; sometimes when people offer remarkable insight, sometimes when many aggregate their thoughts to analyse an issue.

My guess is that there will be moments in the next decade when that insight and aggregation will be needed, so thanks to everyone who keeps the place sane through the flotsam days, before the biggies emerge.  Thanks also for yesterday’s enormous support.  The untold stories of acts of kindness and generosity from the community over the decade are so numerous they are no longer exceptional.  It’s a great place to be a part of.

There are changes ahead.  A new blog design is on the way and the Quick News section will retire this summer.  Canajunbhoy has exclusively posted the section in the wee small hours for the best part of the decade, so he more than deserves peace to hang up his keyboard.  My sincere thanks for all his help.

CQteN was an enormous success and built three school kitchens in Malawi for Mary’s Meals (photos from the last two are on the way).  It was also enormous fun.  We’re going to do it again, although I’m not sure yet if it has the legs to be an annual event/bi-annual or other.  Open to ideas.

Either or for me, both would be great occasions I think with Dublin shading it for access etc. Celtic in Dublin is always a good idea I think!

Hope tomorrow goes well for you mate.

While funerals have been something that has brought me great sorrow, they have also been experiences that have given me great comfort. People have a remarkable instinct to show their compassion on such occasions. While these days can be traumatic they can also be joyful events, sharing past memories and laughing with friends and family does help with th grieving process.

While I’m not a very religous person, you will be in my thoughts tomorrow.

  3. Weefra – my night prayers tonight will be for you and your mum.

It was a well constructed session led by professionals.

Given many of the points of discussion raised on CQN came up from folk who do not frequent here, I would say that it was pretty representative of feelings across the support.. In fact that was quite noticeable to me.

Also there was more than one session with what I assume is a different demographic so I think the folk employed to do the work probably covered most of the bases.

I doubt it will be the last and should become part of an ongoing process of improvement of “back office” functions that will lead to better service to supporters.

    My dear bhoy,

That “wee ditty” as you put it was knocked up in the space of an hour between phonecalls and e-mails and was to the beat of the old pepsi advert.

Now, you have inadvertently let the cat out of the bag because I have had a whole set of lyrics based on We didn’t start the fire for some time and mentioned these to none other than Mr Billy No’Well some time ago!

As yet I have been too busy to do anything about it but………………..

Then — the idea of a CQN Band?

What have we got then by way of players?

We are into the eleventh year of CQN you know and it is about time we did something different.

None of this resting on the laurels you know.

    None of this staid thinking.

We want progression and innovation, evolution and revolution in our outlook.

None of this ” That is always the way it has been done” stuff.

No — If Brennan can make cups of coffee, a trifle, a lemon sponge and chocolate digestive biscuits with a feckin Ipad then the rest of us can at least get off our arses and record a tune which smarty pants can listen to on his tablet whilst making phone calls from Burkina Faso while routing them through beautiful downtown Burnbank at the cheap rate!

I am heading off oot ( to my scratcher)

But, was curious, was it from their fans database ? Current season ticket holders, how do they feel about things currently, those who have given season tickets up, and reason why ? Etc. how could they be attracted back, club direction etc.

My current employer carries out an annual survey for over 750 employees, carried out by an independent body, but what does the business do with the results ?

It passes them to individual sites ( or dept,s) for an action plan, never led by directors or invested in, or measured by the board

In other words playing with Engagement ! And yes I have given that feedback, as one of the business leaders

  24. Champions League qualification crucial for Celtic in transfer window, says Ronny Deila

Celtic manager Ronny Deila says his side must reach the group stages of the Champions League if they are to attract high-quality players to the club

Ronny Deila, the Celtic manager, has admitted that qualification for the group phase of the Champions League for an unprecedented third season in succession is essential if he is to have any chance of bringing the new faces he wants to Parkhead.

Thus far, the former Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon, who has played just one competitive game in the past three years, has been the only player brought in by the Norwegian, who has made it clear that he is not interested in making temporary signings.

Deila is well aware that his squad needs strengthening (Georgios Samaras has gone while James Forrest, Scott Brown and Anthony Stokes are unavailable due to injury) if Celtic are to be competitive in club football’s most prestigious competition but his preferred options are unlikely to materialise should the current incumbents fall short in the European arena.

On Tuesday night Celtic should complete the formality of reaching a third qualifying round tie against either Legia Warsaw or St Patrick’s Athletic when they host KR Reykjavic at Murrayfield, having won the first leg in Iceland 1-0 last week. Deila certainly knows how much is riding on it.

“We are looking for quality and that’s very hard just now, when a lot of the big clubs in the rest of the world haven’t even started pre-season,” he said. “You have to beat clubs like Manchester City who can just buy the ones they want when they want. The biggest get their food first – then the rest of us come after. That’s the challenge we have.

“The longer the window goes, the bigger the opportunities get. There is more pressure on every club and they have to take decisions.

“So, for me, quality is the world – that means someone who can go in and do something at once. But there is also quality in those who can be longer-term prospects.

“Of course, qualifying for the Champions League is very important when it comes to attracting players. That’s a huge thing and it is a big target for us.

“We work together at Celtic. I talk with [chief executive] Peter [Lawwell] and he has the same task as me – to make Celtic as good as possible without putting the club out of order economically. But you know what kind of money there is. It doesn’t compete with the biggest clubs in Europe but it is big in Scottish terms.

“It’s hard to do it right away, to go in and get your target in an hour or whatever. You have to take your time and find the right prospect. We are working hard. We have players we have identified and we will see if we can get the ones we want. I’m confident the current squad can get us to the group stage. A lot of them have been there and done it before.”

Tony Watt, who famously scored the winning goal against Barcelona two years ago, may be asked to replace Stokes, who will miss only this match with a pulled muscle. Midfielder Kris Commons is expected to recover from a thigh injury in time to start on Tuesday night.
