Johnston curve: time to be honest

478

Newco director and former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston is getting a hard time for saying “We are probably doing a little better than we would have imagined back in the dark days of running out at Brechin in the fourth tier” and “we are probably ahead of the curve in reality if we finish second or third”.

Newco are not ahead of the curve if they finish second, given their budget and the experience of their playing squad, they are where they should be.  Another third place finish would be behind the curve, but these are semantics.

The big question is, are this club ‘going for 55’ or was that phrase no more than a device to sell season tickets?

Second for Newco is right on the curve.  If they don’t reach there this season, they will soon, and they will finish second more often than any of their direct competitors.  Johnston’s job is to convince 40,000 people to buy tickets for a competition they know Celtic will win.

I understand why Newco do not run with the phrase “going for second place next time” on season ticket renewal campaigns, but they were only delaying the inevitable.  Many other clubs can be frank with supporters on what their ambitions for the season are, but can you really imagine this level of honesty at Ibrox?

Me neither.  They will spin some old tat to an ever dwindling demographic.  Still, at least the club is in the hands of Dave King and not Mike Ashley, one of Europe’s richest men.  That whole effort worked out well.

  1. ACGR the VFR was a fantastic bike of its day. I travelled to London on it a fair bit so I needed a bigger bike. Got a Fireblade and tried London on that. Too fast and too uncomfortable.

Back to the VFR. Long travel stopped so now on the Ducati Monster. 821 Monster Dark (black obviously) and the 1200s Monster in red.

Dallas the whole NTV series was crass and hurtful.

Danny did really well for Celtic when we were bereft of forwards due to injury.

Remember the game against them, both he and Tom McAdam scored to put us 2 up.

Can I start by thanking everyone, again, for all the good wishes and prayers given to me for my op.

The surgeon apoke to me aferwards and said all went well. He reckons the healing period should be approx. 3 months which is just in time for the new season starting. Thankfull I’ve renewed even although I’ve not attended a game this season. My nieces grandson has made good use of it. Another recruit to the cause :-))) Sorry I couldn’t give you a report last night as I was ina fair bit of pain after the jab wore off.

    Good Morning All.

Today is the day we could clinch our seventh championship in a row and the second leg of an historic double treble.

I had lunch with a long time lurker yesterday who is heading to Edinburgh for an early lunch before taking his seat at Easter Road and a nice chat we had too.

Best of luck to all going to the game and those sitting at home or in the pub watching the events unfold.

I am working today on arrangements for the One Night in Lisbon dinner on Friday 25th May (It is a holiday weekend don’t ya know?). Over 400 plus attendees confirmed so far, and I am heading to Celtic Park on Monday to finalise matters.

Still a few seats left but be quick – e-mail me at jjoe88@hotmail.co.uk.

If anyone has anything they want to donate as a raffle prize or an auction item then get in touch.

All proceeds to the Celtic Charity Foundation, Mary’s Meals, and some smaller charities.

Friesdorfer, jungle jim, and the legend that used to be Cowiebhoy — you can all expect e-mails or communications over the course of the weekend!

Finally, Happy Birthday to the City of Rome which was apparently founded 2771 years ago today and to the late Maurice Walsh who, amongst other things, wrote the wee story which became The Quiet Man!

Big Cup Winners, myself and some of the guys who do Not the View have mutual acquaintences . I have been in theiir company many a time. I think they were eventually embarrassed themselves by they embarrassed the hoops and thankfully stopped doing that article.

That game Danny scored v the original games was pivotal in us winning the league that season.

Tom McAdam had to play up front as George McLuskey was injured.

My dad and I were watching the highlights on the following day. . My mum came into the living as Tom McAdam scored a goal which was disallowed for offlside . She said how can he be offside when he is a defender. My dad’s coupon was a picture after she said that.

Hello this is WEE BGFC. I severely hope we win today. Don’t abuse the position of power we are in at the moment. Get it won. Any Tim who has lived through their – cheating – 10 in a row, or even lived through the 1st team that the hunnites supported being alive at all, knows that, in the grand scheme of things, winning the league does not happen very much. We are living in a special time, let’s keep it that way.

If you can win the league, get it won.

  14. You can put me firmly (not old!) in the want version2 gone camp. Although I know Rangers died in 2012, Sevco going the same way looks like being the only way to stop the undernoted, which makes a farce of the game in Scotland, as the member clubs give it their silent approval.

In fact, our own club won’t even answer when asked, as I did on here with the SLO Q&A, (well, Q anyway), why the nonsense of the SPFL site hasn’t been challenged.

The supporters who wouldn’t go if there was no Sevco would be replaced by those who like their sport integrity-flavoured.

After all, there’s no glory in the farce that is Scottish Football Entertainment.

However, plenty don’t agree, so enjoy your day.

Anyone know of a bar in Pisa that would possibly show the game ?

Had a quick look for you but not coming up with any immediate answers. There are a few results for Sports bars and Irish Bars but am reluctant to recommend any because I don’t know any personally and the searches don’t throw up any that I am confident in.

You might be best advise to do a more local internet search as that might throw up some different results.

You’re a tower of strength for people on here, even when they’re in Pisa. I’d lean more towards the Irish bars having the game on.

  22. ACGR I have asked on cqn Facebook if anyone knows Robert desertbhoy as a few bhoys still use that site that no longer post here. I will let you know if anything comes of it. Maybe ask Paul67 as I’m sure Paul has email addresses and maybe numbers for most. BRTH ( Jim) might also be a good source.

  23. SMSM getting their retaliation in first after a week of humping hell in the Sevco nation, the Arsenal announcement was fed on like frenzied manna from heaven by the ever-willing Williams. Reminiscent, of all the other times there’s no glorifying any Celtic triumph and certainly not when Celtic are set for our second seven of all time in the SPL.

Wim Jansen sprang to mind and when Celtic interrupted the cheating years at poignant point with Henrik and Harald, the papers were already printed with zero coverage of the Tim turnaround but helping hacks following Wim down to Portugal to get his signing off story, for the Sunday Mason.

By the time Brendan has done his damage we’ll already have been told by just William that it would be good for Scottish football if he left for pastures new, any pastures new. Whether, Rodgers credentials are ‘good enough,’ for a club famous for winning the F.A. Cup and nearly having once signed Jimmy McGrory, only time will tell. One thing is sure his ‘background’ is definitely not, In the meantime Celtic supporters will be fed dogma anyway, Celtic wins will be mainstream minimized, whilst Timmy rejoices onwards to summer temperatures.

Same hun humping handsome eleven Celtic side for Easter Rd?, and a quiet chat afterwards for Brendan and Neil, discussing Ryan Christie as make weight in the John McGinn move, when the caravan will move on towards eight, whilst the dirty dawgs are still barking mad.

You’ll be lucky. There are 3 Irish bars in Pisa but they don’t open till 6pm.

There is a Scottish pub but looks like its mostly for music.

However, Finnegan’s pub in Florence, a 1 hour train journey away, should have it.
