Johnston curve: time to be honest

478

Newco director and former Rangers chairman Alastair Johnston is getting a hard time for saying “We are probably doing a little better than we would have imagined back in the dark days of running out at Brechin in the fourth tier” and “we are probably ahead of the curve in reality if we finish second or third”.

Newco are not ahead of the curve if they finish second, given their budget and the experience of their playing squad, they are where they should be.  Another third place finish would be behind the curve, but these are semantics.

The big question is, are this club ‘going for 55’ or was that phrase no more than a device to sell season tickets?

Second for Newco is right on the curve.  If they don’t reach there this season, they will soon, and they will finish second more often than any of their direct competitors.  Johnston’s job is to convince 40,000 people to buy tickets for a competition they know Celtic will win.

I understand why Newco do not run with the phrase “going for second place next time” on season ticket renewal campaigns, but they were only delaying the inevitable.  Many other clubs can be frank with supporters on what their ambitions for the season are, but can you really imagine this level of honesty at Ibrox?

Me neither.  They will spin some old tat to an ever dwindling demographic.  Still, at least the club is in the hands of Dave King and not Mike Ashley, one of Europe’s richest men.  That whole effort worked out well.

  7. Taken from Paul67’s leader in September 2014:

The long-term financial fundamentals remain unchanged. In 2012 the Blue Knights concluded there was no viable future for football at Ibrox if Rangers were liquidated. Two years later all the evidence reaffirms that position. This is a dead multi-club franchise.

A further 3.5 years later, it still rings true!

I think that our smarter supporters should cease advising what Sevco need to do to challenge Celtic. Allow them to continue to look for Investment from anywhere and to keep their false Entitlement “We are the people”.

What we should do is tell the Bears what they want to hear. Bad Luck, break of the ball, closer than the score suggests, Celtic should be building up the Bears expectation of next Match.

ETims produced a Tweat from a bear who thinks the League is not over and still has hope. It is this hope which will sink them. We should build up the Bears confidence before again hammering them again on the 29th April.

It will seem patronising to adopt this strategy and it is. However, the more they think that they are closing the gap and operating the strategy their current Board believe in, the less chance that they will actually get it right.

King and his backers are a dead end for Sevco. The longer they are in charge, the better this is for Celtic.

Sevco have a large support and can operate in the market much better than they are doing. Their Turnover is less than 25% of ours. Their attendance figures are good and can provide a base to increase turnover to challenge our turnover

However, with Museum, Hotel and Fanzone proposals, our board are investing in Revenue generating activities which will further increase our Turnover. This Capex/Opex trade off is adopted by lots of Businesses and makes good financial sense.

So we should, therefore, keep our own counsel on Sevco, don’t offer them advice but embrace their pain and reassure them that their time will come at the same time encouraging our Team to beat them consistently.

Of course Johnston is correct to say they can’t compete for the title, although it would be interesting to know what the supporters who bought season tickets on the basis that they were “Going For” the league think about it.

Would also be interesting to know Dave King’s current view. In September 2015 he said “We would start next season with the intention of winning the Premiership, we understand the gap against Celtic but the ambition is not to come second. We’d go in believing we can win the league.”

  14. From main header…

1 more sleep until our first chance to win the league for the 7th (SEVENTH) time in a row.

If youre gonna question logos how about starting with our own. A club like no other . Or more than a club.

Maybe someone somewhere can justify their use. Ive yet to hear or read it though.

As for our slogans. ” More than a club” or “a club like no other”

Easily answered. To all of us who avidly follow the team and believe in the club’s ethos and mission statement, then both sound bites are logical and accurate.

  18. I suspect Johnston was referring to the Kubler Ross Curve. They seem to be someway between Anger and Depression which is a bit further on from Denial.

Johnston clearly expected them to still be in denial and therefore up for season ticket purchase. There is probably an equation that can show level of season book purchases linked to position on the KR Curve…

  22. The Arsenal thing is a good test at this point. I’m sure Brendan is still ambitious, will leave us at some point and life will go on. My initial thoughts are this is too early for him and he will stay clear. If Arsenal come calling they might change his mind but I don’t think so.

I’m expecting Arsenal to want to get someone with proven CL pedigree in line with the other biggies down south. So for me Brendan doesn’t fit their profile. I also suspect candidates should remember what happened at Man U when Ferguson left.

With Stevie Clarke in training we won’t be high and dry should the worst unfold…

Do you think that saying nothing, or “stonewalling” the question, would stop the media from printing stuff to upset the gullibles amongst us?

Unfortunately for them, the media, Brendan gave his answer yesterday, before the question was asked.

All DD did today was to demonstrate the trust he has in Rodgers’ word and how cool Celtic are in the face of another attempt to derail us.

Contrary to some peoples’ opinion, Desmond is not some sort of Trump Lite, who demands attention.
