JURANOVIC v BASSEY DEADLOCK

IT ended in a scoreless stalemate when former derby rivals Josip Juranovic and Calvin Bassey went head to head in the Europa League.

It was a tense evening in the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam last night as Ajax hosted Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.

Former Celtic fans’ favourite Juranovic, 28, joined the German side in January in a £10million switch while 23-year-old Bassey moved to the Dutch aces from the Ibrox club in the summer in a reported £19.6million transfer.

EURO STAR…Josip Juranovic in action for Union Berlin against Ajax’a Owen Wijndal in the 0-0 draw.

The last time the full-backs had been in contention was April last year when the Croatian defender was withdrawn from the action with an injury as Ange Postecoglou’s men were knocked out of the Scottish Cup semi-final following an unfortunate extra-time own goal from Carl Starfelt.

Juranovic may have been out for revenge and he did play his part in keeping the game goalless with the hosts failing to have a single shot on target.

The Germans had the ball in the net with an effort from Morten Thorsby, but it was ruled out by VAR after he was judged to have handled in the lead-up play.

Juranovic and Bassey will meet again in East Berlin in the second leg on Thursday.
