Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

However when CSA went silent in September when supplied with draft of a resolution for upcoming AGM I was a bit surprised but was told by someone more acquainted with CSA rules/constitution that they could not get involved in criticising The Board

apologies for being late to the party but am I reading you correct here – we have a board that deliberately shuts down feedback from an official body representing its own supporters?

  2. Toney was to be signed as a replacement for Edouard. French Eddie stayed.

Hence why Toney is still there, as a striker and is scoring goals shock/horror, although not against two banks of 4 and a mason referee.

It’s getting a bit tired now. We didn’t sign him, get over it.

No sense of entitlement here, never has been, nor will ever be. I like Lenny, but he is being used by the Board to deflect from their massive and continued failings. If you think otherwise, then there is little point in further discourse on this issue. Best wishes, and here’s hoping for a good performance and result tomorrow.

  4. One thing strikes me about the banners are they double sided???

Because if not the board wont see them.

Some should be pointing in toward the stadium.

Stopped watching the Manchester derby, garbage, had a look at Union Berlin v Bayern M. The stadium is 22k with just over 3k seats. Bring back those days

  6. VP – Sorry just read your comment about Its a wonderful life, I know it’s a tear jerker.

Respectfully disagree. If Toney was to be signed as a replacement for Eddie, why did we sign Ajeti? The Chairman of Brentford is ambitious, and acquired an interest in FC Midjtylland, basically a new club. They have now overtaken FC Copenhagen, feature in the Champions League, and their direction of travel is up. Brentford are equally ambitious and aim to be in the Premier League next season, after narrowly missing out last season. The ambitions of both linked clubs are clearly articulated in the attached video. Our Board has demonstrated zero ambition to be in the Champions League Group Stage every year, which is legitimately achievable if we plan, and obtain targets before the qualifiers. Lawwell has been utterly abysmal and inept in this basic strategy, and the whole Toney fiasco highlights this.

Sorry, respectfully disagree. I honestly don’t think there’s zero ambition there.

  10. Ross County’s and St. Johnstone’s results today emphasize just how dismal our performances were prior to the Lille renaissance.

  11. IniquitousIV on 12th December 2020 5:27 pm

Superb 15th goal of the season from Ivan Toney today. Anyone who thought Ajeti was better than this guy is not a football scout. If he keeps up this rate of scoring, he will not be long at Brentford.

    ——-

I don’t think Toney ever said he wanted to come to Celtic.

He said he wanted to move to a higher level, and the EPL. His best chance of EPL was Brentford as they are a good pathway to the EPL.

Coming to Celtic allows him Euro footy but doesn’t really guarantee moving any higher.

We play one up front, doesn’t really make sense having Eddie and Toney with one of them sat on the bench.

Like Jobo I’m in the north curve, suspiciously older than most around me 😵

  13. MARTIM 1980

It’s all about opinions. If the Board have Champions League Group Stage aspirations, they surely have a strange way of displaying it! They certainly don’t articulate it.

  14. Pans Bhoy

Brilliant! You just keep jumping around then!

    ‘No Jobo, no party!’

Have to say, the seats in the old stand aren’t made for us tall lads. Wouldn’t like to try squeezing An Tearmann into them!

  15. Ivan Toney is totally typical of a big Pedro deal…

A quality player that wanted to come to Celtic, properly scouted, Peterborough were asking reasonable money for him. All we needed to do was close the deal but big Pedro wouldn’t pay it…

Happened dozens of times before… another John McGinn. Our CEO should not be near a football deal, incompetent doesn’t come close.

‘Sack the board ‘ and replace it with………the Green Brigade.

Citizen Smith(the satirical one) would be proud.

Peterborough chairman repeatedly said he was frustrated due to Toney stating he wanted to go to Celtic, and refusing to talk to other Clubs.

Barry Fry says a lot of things, he was doing his best to get the biggest fee for his player.

  19. Yep, stinking game at Old Trafford.

Man U are pretty poor, City didn’t look much better.

Looks like another Liverpool title, unless Spurs/Chelsea do something

  20. Am I right in thinking that the smashin’ entity referred to as “The Celtic Trust” are a Supporters group, much like The other Supporters groups, like the Clydebank Emerald, or indeed the legendary Bridgeton Rocket-Launchers etc etc?

The name to me suggests an official link to the Club beyond other Supporters groups / Clubs – always meant to ask the brilliant HT when he was on.

  21. THE_HUDDLE @ 7:23 PM,

    And why wouldn’t he!?

Question is, was that fee unreasonable?

The answer No!! So pay it.

    Hail Hail

  22. Fry insisted Toney was Hoops boss Neil Lennon’s first choice in the summer — but was let down by head of football operations Nick Hammond and chief executive Peter Lawwell.

Fry told SunSport: “Ivan wanted to go to Celtic. They should have pulled their finger out but they f***** about.

“Good job I never waited for them to sell Edouard because they didn’t anyway.

“The boy’s done brilliant for Brentford — and that’s what I expected.

“Ivan’s different class. Premier League clubs are ringing me up about him.

“Those clubs wanted to take him before but that was just to put him on their benches. Now they want to take him to play.

“I said to Lenny and Nicky Hammond, when I met him, that Ivan wasn’t only a goalscorer, he was also the best DEFENDER we had. Honestly, at opposition corners and set-pieces the boy was brilliant with clearing headers.

“What do I think he’s worth for them now? They might get £30-50m for him if he carries on the way he is.
