Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

    Sounds like big Sutton, people often forget he started as a Centre Half…

    Martin O’Neil often pulled him back to defend when we were up in a tight game. Exactly the sort of player you need at set plays…

    Hail Hail

  2. ONENIGHTINLISBON @ 7:43 PM,

    This is very current, there are dozens of players we have let slip but the two you mention in this squad could have been the difference in the TEN!!

    Hail Hail

  3. Ivan Toney ???

    Boy might be a goal scorer in the championship where players like Joe Garner, Josh Windass even Waghorn (pen) and other players who haven’t scored many in the Spl … … but I suppose it must be Lawells fault … ffs … do some posters actually just look for a reason to be annoyed … anybody else think Ajetti playing against championship defences might notch a goal or two himself

  4. GFTB

    My view is thay Toney might not be so prolific against two banks of 5 and hun referee.

    I want Soro, Turnbull and Henderson to play tomorrow from the start.

    However, their examination will be different from Thursday as Killie will sit in, hope to hit us on the break and hope to break our legs.

    Hope yer good buddy. (saw your post the other night about HUNDERBIRDS -lovely, lovely ghuy)

  5. ONENIGHTINLISBON

    McGinn, Toney. Move on.

    And another thing. Lawwell is really spinning out the Fletcher deal. It’s been nearly 10 years. He needs to get the finger out.😊

  6. If anyone thinks that Celtic would have paid 9M for a third tier Player in England, can I have some of the stuff you are smoking.

    Not saying it wouldn’t have been a good deal just can’t see it ever happening

  7. GFTB @ 7:49 PM,

    All good in the brig I hope.

    Didn’t all those players have a better scoring rate with Rangers than they did in the Championship.

    None of their scoring rates with Rangers or in the Championship come even close to Ivan Toney’s, so I’m a wee bit lost…

    Mibeee it’s those Airdrie Schools;)

    Hail Hail

    You have always being very courteous when we have responded online and I do appreciate it … but (but always a but) you mentioned on Friday that you were delighted with Thursdays result but didn’t want to post before the Lillie game (I am paraphrasing a bit) but then in your “praise” of the team you quite cleverly directed the blog to the “Brendan” debate/argument/closed views … as if you were doing the blog a favour … by not commenting before the Lille game but desperate to lead the blog on a different avenue a few hours later …. well maybe more than a few hours later … for the record I appreciate every single thing Brendan brought to Celtic … but for every good thing his departure shows me one thing … I am the fool for falling for his shoite … if Dermot & the board are the big bad wolves why to this day has St Brendan never once even tried to explain his “midnight flit” … and by the way in my opinion … Leicester’s relatively easy run from February to May that season was a definite factor

    But keep up the negative drips and hope all is well in the Chilterns :-)

  9. Chairbhoy on 12th December 2020 7:28 pm

    And why wouldn’t he!?

    Question is, was that fee unreasonable?

    The answer No!! So pay it.

    ——

    Don’t disagree with any of that, though posters are ignoring the fact we still play one up front, so do they really think we’d have a £9mill man sitting on the bench.

    You are assuming that the player would’ve chosen Celtic over Brenford

    Hunderbirds… is my view of CQN, we can all argue, fallout and talk shoite … but sometimes when you actually put a face to a post it’s quite sort of special

    There are loads of posters on here who without P67 that I would never have met

    I think that’s why your quite protective of our host :-)

    and quite rightly so :-)

  12. Thanks Stivs – interesting read, I’d thought they were a ‘ fishal outfit of the Club but can see the position now.

    Given the times we are living thru it’s good to have as many Fans’ groups as possible.

  13. THE_HUDDLE @ 8:03 PM,

    Well Brentford got him for £5M +++,

    So we paid £5M for Ajeti and £6M for Barkas, do I don’t see it as been ridiculous really.

    Also it seems Gavin Strachan set up the deal and Toney was keen to come.

    Nick Hammond went to London to close the deal but didn’t bring the money – it’s a bit tardy isn’t it, a bit big Pedro…

    Hail Hail

  14. GREENPINATA @ 4:55pm

    I live and work in England and my colleagues don’t get it either but if they take the time to allow me to explain why I feel the way I do then actually they do get it. The case for protest and change is imho inarguable and long overdue.

    To summarise:-

    Silent on the biggest sporting scandal in UK history by our now defunct city rivals;

    Silent on ridiculous claim by Sevco that they are Rangers;

    Silent on SFA corruption;

    Complicit in 5WA;

    No wish to challenge LNS;

    Silent on OBAF and treatment of Celtic fans by Glasgow’s finest;

    Silent when faced with SMSM bullshit/lies;

    Silent on double standards adopted by SFA and their refs both in on and off field regulation;

    Silent on reforming Scottish football and its governance;

    Failure to pay the living wage;

    Repeated failures in Europe against teams with a fraction of our resources;

    Penny pinching over transfer fees and salaries for players but opposite for Exec pay;

    Complete failure of scouting, recruitment and development;

    An obscenely overpaid CEO who thinks he’s also a DoF;

    The pro-PLC anti BR (and now fans) leaks to the SMSM;

    Missing in action while the manager questions the way we’ve been treated over COVID;

    Silent as Sevco unfettered repeat their predecessors financial chicanery;

    Basking in the reflected glory of the Foundation’s work and fans efforts when it suits;

    A 3rd rate management and coaching team; and

    Last but by no means least – Res. 12 and the contemptuous treatment of the requisitioners/shareholders.

    But apart from all of that then of course they have every right to claim that “we’re a club like no other”!

    Any latest on Karamoko Dembele?

    Heard a few different rumours – from coaching staff weren’t happy with his application to another one that he isn’t signing a new contract with Celtic and therefore not included in first team plans?

    Hoping the ‘protest’ goes ahead tomorrow and the guys and girls who sell flags and scarves on the way to the Park have been able to stock up on pitch forks and flaming torches.

    Protective of our host?

    The amount and level of abuse PAUL gets on here is hunbelievable.

    I read most of his articles and agree with some. That means I also disagree with some.

    But I don’t insult him.

    There is a poster on here who insults everyone who disagrees with him then posts his own dying blog on here looking for clicks.

    That is abuse.

    What decent person would do that?

    I have been on this blog for mibbe 12 years or so and to say I really enjoy it is an understatement.

    It’s my go to for news of Celtic. I don’t buy newspapers.

    I’ve met PAUL and his family at Celtic games and golf outings. He’s a really nice ghuy.

    I’ve met loads of CQN’ers at golf, games and HOOTS. I’ve never met one I didn’t like!

    There are , in my opinion, people who post on here who are not Celtic minded, who would be delighted if PAUL said enough is enough.

    No problems with anyone disagreeing with our host. None at all.

    But anyone who who is pouncing on the “New Article” with a tirade of abuse has a different aganda from most of us.

    I’ve been on here long enough to know that huns post on here and if you ask me to name them your not reading all the posts.

    So, yes, i will continue to be protective of our host and his blog.

    He deserves it, don’t you think?

  21. GFTB @ 8:02 PM,

    The point is that P67, had an article on “don’t follow Sinatra.” Sinatra being Brendan Rodgers.

    Although not necessarily beforehand, I’ve always found P67 very reasonable on BR since his departure, as of course he was t’uther day.

    The fact is though, they’re always fholk who will repeat the Rodgers leaving cliches, glad to say we had none of the Rhat, Fraudgers nonsense of the past – that came from supposed Celtic fans.

    The fact is all the posters I responded to I have a great respect for, my responses were courteous, factual and I believe backed by evidence.

    If you think otherwise maybe you could say.

    We are not all unmannered heathens from Airdrie, I often get complimented on my manners, as do my Children!! BTW: I finished my Scottish Schooling in Whifflet… so hope springs eternal;)

    ONENIGHTINLISBON @ 8:18 PM,

    Spot on

    This blog is far more than us eijits arguing about Celtic … I like the fact you have P67s back …

    The one thing I can’t understand who any “grown up” Celtic fan takes Paul’s word as gospel … surely over the period of CQN Paul can has his own view… in my view P67 has created s terrific vehicle for us to mump or moan .. I read every article but never once has the article every changed my own view … we all have our own Celtic

    Anytime me and you disagree on here my C & E give me a hard time ,.. would love your C & O to give you a hard time :-)

    Hail Hail

    Brendan like Kieran …

    I appreciate their place in our teams history … time is a terrific healer

    I wish they never left

    But we move on

    All kidding aside I enjoy our interactions … two Celtic fans with differing outlooks is a good thing never a negative … although I think my outlook is always more positive :-)

    (Not necessarily the right/correct attitude :-)
