Just. Change. Nothing.

756

Can we all just agree to change nothing?  I know it was a dead rubber and I know it’s different playing against a 10 man defence, but honestly, just, change, nothing.

We had a defender at the right side of defence, not a frustrated winger.  That subtly rebalanced the team; Kristoffer Ajer (22) was not 20 yards further upfield to connect to a Mohamed Elyounoussi pass, but he was back to provide cover and balance to the two to his left.

Christopher Jullien and Shane Duffy had their most assured game together – although Shane, you were never winning that ball, you should have shown the player down the line instead of committing to the foul.  It was a mistake that would have been sore on another day.

David Turnbull (21) got one goal, one assist and got the assist for the penalty.  That is an incredible return for a player who has been sitting in the stand or out through illness all season.

After a couple of substitute appearances in 11 months at the club, Ismaila Soro (22) made his starting debut and was even more influential than Turnbull to the flow of Celtic’s play.  The deep lying central midfield player has several jobs: protect the defence, intercept opposition moves, get the ball forward quickly and accurately.  A lot of off the ball work is also required; the best in the business are in position to stop moves before an interception is required.  Ismaila did all of this very well.

Like Soro, the lack of opportunities afforded to Patryk Klimala (22) made me think he was less effective than our other strikers have been recently.  Apparently not.  Patryk is all about movement.  He can take a ball, bring others into play and – effectively last night – win corner kicks.  At no time did he try to beat three players on his own, take note, Odsonne.

After THAT pass at Tynecastle in 2019 you may have wondered what happened to Ewan Henderson (20).  The player had a lost 18 months but, like the rest of the midfield last night, he was on his game.  He was tidy and intelligent in possession.  Use him.

The biggest compliment to the midfield and defence is that Conor Hazard (22) had little to do.  Blameless at either goal, he got a foot to a dangerous ball, handled and distributed well throughout.

I don’t know who deserved the win more, the players, the manager or you and me, no doubt someone has been busy running a poll on the subject…..  Onto Sunday!

Celtic: Fifty Flags Plus One, an anthology of how Celtic won each of their league titles, is available now.  Starting with our first title in 1893, it details how Willie Maley brought consistent glory, then the sparse successes over four decades before Jock Stein arrived in 1965 and the more contemporary wins since.

It will rekindle memories you had forgotten and give insight into how the leagues were won.

Despite what’s troubling us (hopefully everyone is doing well) you never lose that match day excitement, when hope and anxiety are strange bedfellows.

Hoping for a big win today, just a win will do

Stay safe fellow Tims one and all.

C’mon the leather belts (for those of us above a certain age) 🍀🍀🍀

Was weeBFG in the film ?

I need to admit I haven’t saw the film but have definitely met a few monsters fae Plains :-)

Plains is outer Airdrie, pretty sure our very own Lennybhoy originates from the ole Plains … as a wee Bhoy, I thought it was a place where all the “planes” parked :-)

    Just read your post…

So I think Toney scoring against championship teams (a good few penalties as well) is a different sport playing for Brentford than playing for Celtic against packed defences … plus am afraid to say we don’t get that many penalties even though we are probably in the opponents box more than Brentford

  9. Bada Bing (11.08am), DU don’t know who they’re putting out yet, they’re still trying to find 11 players who are unaffected by Covid and not still isolating. Just as Covid has negatively impacted Celtic this season, it continues to benefit the Huns. Sadly I can’t see past another stroll in the park for them today… 3-0 with goals from Tavernier (pen) to calm their nerves, then Arsefield and Roofe.

But which Celtic team will turn up today? Will it be a 1-1 drudgefest or a confidence boosting 5-0 exhibition???

  10. Neil…Surely you will have Soro and Turnbull in your starting eleven AND TWO Players up front…as well as Bitton before Duffy ?

You know it makes sense…Please ?

  11. Christmas and Celtic, strawberries and cream.

The green white and how did that happen gold corporation bus dropped us at Beardmores in Parkhead for Celtic at home, once an iron foundry that helped mother Glasgow and the United Kingdom repel the other forces of darkness. An industrial Glasgow that gave birth to some lions, later of some Lisbon fame.

We used to walk up Duke St to Parkhead Cross in an age where you didn’t wear a jacket 10 months of the year, out-with sheer Glaswegian balticy conditions, it was a green Celtic knitted woollen garment dark bottle variation sometimes with gold hoops on the sleeve, or in summer with college neck’s of V? A Billy Connelly friction at the barbers, wrangler jeans, segs in your shoes, green and white ‘walk on’ scarf, and we were good to go.

One of the guys I went with moved down sarf’ escaping nae jaiket winters, but him and his boy still support Celtic, he’s a Celtic crazy, born 400 miles away from Parkhead and is his fathers image. When we went on a Saturday, Parkhead was one step from the city biz, but had its own community thoroughfare. It was as good and better than London town, earthy and alive, and where you went to see the Celtic by birthright from every street in Glasgow.

Just another Celtic Saturday always, always a Saturday up to Parkhead we passed there were women in a steady queue always, for that afternoon’s Granada experience all praying for a wee win, “ Look at that ” every week my down sarf mate would say ‘ bigger crowd at the bingo ’ he predicted. Arriving early on a Saturday by Janefield street he sometimes wasn’t far wrong. We’d progressed to the Jungle by that age, underneath the panoramic wee podium that housed Arthur or Archie in their second home, blasting a commentary that was fair, but bland.

Sheep we were, all Tims because you did what your big brother did, and got yourself along to paradise to see that team they call the Celtic, there was no such thing as herd immunity back then, it was Parkhead for you my bhoy . Pick your spot, any spot 18,000 proclaimed the Evening Times, only on a good day, for the visit of real sheep the crowd went up. If it was verse the old Rangers, all bets were off, normal arrangements were abandoned it wasn’t a match day experience, travel was restricted and public transport was avoided.

If ‘the cameras’ were there it was a weekend changing experience, fair made the day with the thrill of knowing you’d seen your team, win lose or draw and would see them again on television that same night, from the jungle you knew your voice was among one of the bhoys. Had there been a a Christmas without a Celtic present, it wasn’t Christmas at all.

Score forecast Celtic 5 Killie 0

    Big brothers CSC

    Hail Hail

  12. IF I ever become First Minister of Scotland I would make a Govt Policy/Law…that whenever the Huns get a Penalty…the Opposition are awarded THREE Penalties…jut to even thing up…

That should sort oot those Cheatin Hun Refs…Simples…

It could prove a Vote Winner ?

    LOL

Possibly but then why compare anything? There are always variables.

My point was more to do with Ajeti who hasn’t been fit for over two years and looks no closer to completing a full 90-minute match in what is a poor league.

I’m not suggesting Toney is the new Van Basten but at least he’s fit, sharp and can play a full match.

  14. Big Jimmy – You have my vote with that policy.

It’s always got to be 2 up top when we are at home in spfl and that’s 2 centre forwards not a CF and a Midfielder.

    D :)

  15. Geebee 12.01pm

Fair play … you’ve won me over

But (always a but) surely before a ball is kicked the Swiss internationalist looked more appealing than the Ivan Bhoy fae Peterborough ??

Hindsight is always more informative than foresight … where would you have spent your £5m ??? Maybe nearer £10m with add ons for the Peterborough Bhoy

  16. Petec 12.14pm

Without revisiting the John Mc stuff, he choose the midlands and is doing very very well for himself …. but (aab) he would be sent off every other week in Scotland … he should have got 3 yellows in yesterday’s game :-)

That ship has sailed and it was the self confessed Tic fan that decided that route

  17. GFTB on 13TH DECEMBER 2020 12:06 PM

It’s a good point about hindsight but Ajeti’s fitness and attitude had been questioned for some time, he’d barely played any football for over a season and he wasn’t exactly desperate to join if reports are to be believed.

I mean you’re right that he’s technically a Swiss international with 10 caps but when was the last time he played or started? Would be be first pick if they were to announce a squad this afternoon? Genuine question…

  18. Just spotted 4 players in DUNDEE UTD team who are trying .The goalkeeper is not one of them. Free kick 2 mile out and he stands and watches it.

  19. Ajeti is a year younger than Toney

At 21 he had scored goals in arguably a better league than the Scottish Premiership. He has ten full caps for a good international team

Until this season Toney had never played football outside of the third tier in England. He had no age-group caps for any international teams.
