Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Morning troops, early(ish) start in the Rebel County……weather glorious.

A cursory glance over the blog’s shoulder will reveal determined attempts by sleekit spoilsport(s) with ( very determined and technically dexterous) interchangeable pop-up personas – all of them unattractive and none of them tim-like in any shape or form.

In my opinion it’s an act – every bit as bogus as the tribute act. The foul language and aggression synonymous with the dark side – but part of a prepared script.

The motives are obvious – spoil the blog.

You are right on the money, my old Bankie neighbour.

What was once an oasis from the targeted lies of our sick MSM, in now become a plaything for attention seekers with agendas that have nothing to do with supporting Celtic.

We can see what is happening, but sadly we have no way of effectively dealing with our abusers.

Good Luck to yourself & your family.

My thanks to LYMMBHOY who hit post 1000 only to see it relegated to 891.

    Nae luck,buddy!

I started reading back and it was like some kind of dystopian post-modern dialogue. Mind you, it might have been that way before the posts were deleted! Still one sweary there I noticed. :-)

If the past 2 decades taught us nothing else, it’s that a successful team on the park and a sustainable approach to business are mutually inclusive.

It’s a balancing act of course, and sometimes the balance tips too far to one side. Mowbray’s appointment saw big losses to fund a team that bombed. Lenny’s time reversed that quite dramatically, although his player signings last summer are negative.

We now have some cash to play with, and we’ll see what we do with it. There’s a school of thought that the cash is being stashed to provide a springboard in the event that Sevco re-emerge, and there is some merit in such an idea, although I don’t subscribe to it. It’s better to be strong than to have the capacity to strengthen imo.

I think though that the plan is simply to do more of the same as we’ve been doing for the past 4 years, only better. The structural problem at Celtic is the substantial decrease in matchday revenue such that the club is beholden on Champions League revenue to turn a profit, but the Champions League is a qualifying lottery.

Between the season ticket discount, the reduced matchday income and the revised TV distribution since Rangers died, the club is down around £5M, or 10% of baseline revenue.

Excluding player trading, we have a baseline income of a little less than £50M, and an operating base of more than £60M. There’s a £15M hole to fill given last year’s numbers.

Thus, carrying a Champions League wage bill – currently £40M – and failing to qualify wipes out whatever cash we have at a stroke. A single season with current costs and no champions league = square one.

    What do you do?

I expect we’ll probably try to find more and better young talent, rather than fewer and more expensive proven players. In fact, that’s a given. The result will be a continuing fluctuation in the balance between football success and business sustainability, but the fluctuations will be less marked, and considerably de-risked.

Doubt that’s what you want to hear, but there it is.

    Morning all

Happy wedding anniversary to Lennybhoy and hippo birdie to Glasgowbhoy.

Yesterday and last night made some pretty brutal reading. There seems an awful lot of people who have direct lines into NFL, DD, PL and RK’s heads. Like the tabloids, these people hate that Celtic are saying nothing.

I believe that Celtic will appoint the right man in their own time.

Trying to simultaneously quit fags and booze is interesting.

Never heard of Ronny Deila until 10 minutes ago.

A quick google search found these 2 articles

    http://www.espnfc.com/story/1601433

    http://ahellofabeating.wordpress.com/2012/07/29/the-awesomeness-of-ronny-deila/

Now maybe it’s just the excitement of the unknown, the sort of logic where Sam Allardyce thinks if he was called Allardici he’d be a top 4 EPL manager, or maybe it’s because the list of bookies favourites is so underwhelming, but this is the kind of out the box thinking that I can get behind.

I’ve got behind it anyway, after a 4 season sabbatical I somewhat impulsively decided to get a season ticket again last night, so fingers crossed there is some substance to this rumour. Take a chance on a manager whose career is on an upward trajectory, who apparently favours exciting football styled after Klopp’s Dortmund, and who has according to that 2nd article been operating on a moneyball club strategy. What’s not to like?

I can’t find the parts 2 or 3 on any of the video or documentary channels, it needs somebody located in the UK to strip and post them, quite an easy thing to do if anybody fancies it.

I was born in Dalmarnock, live on Dalmarnock rd above The White Horse pub. My granny lived in Dunclutha St opposite the bowling green.

I left many years ago, although I lived there again as a student when I returned to Glasgow.

Watching it all on Commonwealth City was quite emotional. Mixed emotions.

One thing for sure is that opportunity and hope has returned to the area. I hope it works out for those who live there…. It will be interesting to see what it’s like 5 years down the line.

  15. Just watching the second episode of Commonwealth city.

I can’t believe there are people out there who would stoop so low that they would google how to watch the bbc from out with the UK (and add supplementary words like chrome or IPad or whatever) and then followed the directions.

I just hope that they have a decent virus checker before they’d download anything though.

Thanks for your post. A couple of things wrong

    1. TM big losses. Did you forget the January fire sale pushed by PL. About 5m came in and nothing out plus substantial reduction of the wage base All while we were 5 points behind the deid club

    2. If your figures for last year are right ( must wait for accounts this year ) it means we must sell our top players just to survive

If that’s what you are saying then a bit of honesty and integrity from our PLC would be nice ” every penny spent mince “

The one thing that has me agog are the two councillors driving about in BMWers and Mercs? Liked the fact that in the first episode they were playing Gorgeous George by Edwyn Collins when he was being questioned by one of his local residents carrying a pair of shears “I know where yir mither lives!”

The wummin seemed authentic at the beginning but is suddenly this big power player driving a Merc. Power to ra peepil down Dalmarnock way!

Darren Faulds has at least come across as genuine (Dalmarnock’s top entrepeneur – purveyor of Bucky to the masses!) Sends his kids to private school on the compy for demolishing his shops.

Of all the candidates only Moyes has Euro experience as manager although Clarke has as an assistant and plenty of it.

According to what I have read,Jose speaks of him in glowing terms.Dont think he would have lasted as long without a considerable input. We know Jose does not suffer fools gladly. For me,he is the Brit I would go for.Still,Yakin,Petrescu, type of guy for me though.
