Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

  6. Celtic may be prepared to hold off for Larsson

HENRIK LARSSON could yet feature in Celtic’s next managerial structure after reports emerged in Sweden that the Scottish champions still want to take him to Parkhead later this year.

Henrik Larsson is thought highly unlikely to go back on his word to Falkenbergs

The prospects of the iconic former striker returning to Celtic seemed to end last month when he insisted he would remain with his current club, Falkenbergs, until the end of the Swedish season on November 2. But after the pursuit of Roy Keane, which ended with the Republic of Ireland assistant manager deciding to make himself unavailable, Celtic are still searching for the man or men to replace Neil Lennon and may not have given up on Larsson.

After days rife with speculation over the Keane saga – with Steve Clarke emerging as the latest frontrunner and Malky Mackay and Owen Coyle also among the contenders -there was quiet and little obvious movement in the search for Lennon’s successor yesterday.

However, it was reported in Sweden that Celtic representatives had a meeting with Larsson last week, after he had publicly said he would remain with Falkenbergs, and that the Parkhead club may let him honour his contract before taking him back to Scotland in five months.

That would apply only if Larsson was part of a managerial structure which involved others who could take the first team in the meantime, of course, given that all the Champions League qualifying rounds, the first three group stage games, and about the first third of the Scottish domestic season all take place before the end of November.

Larsson is thought highly unlikely to go back on his word to Falkenbergs and will almost certainly honour his contract with them but, if Celtic are prepared to wait the end of the Swedish season, he may be prepared to return to the scene of the greatest years of his playing career.

Last night there was an unlikely endorsement of Larsson for the Celtic job from another prominent Swedish football figure, the former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson. “Henrik is Mr Celtic, or was anyway, and he has done well in Falkenberg,” said Eriksson. “I think he would be an excellent choice for the club. How long did he play there, almost 10 years? I think it would be a very popular choice among fans. He is still the king in Scotland.”

Eriksson himself is not a contender, at least. He now coaches the Chinese club Guangzhou R&F on a £2m-a-year contract. He admitted, though, that he regularly gets asked if he would be interested in the Parkhead job. “It is always the case that now Celtic have no new coach, agents call and ask ‘are you interested in Celtic?’ It is in itself nice to be one of the names flying around, but I feel good in China.”

Bouldbhoy, I thought you’d met my young bro after we tried to get you into work last year.

Apologies if I’ve got that wrong. Your uselessness is a hard thing to pitch in the job market.

Looks like the moonhowlers sesh was fun last night.

Canny wait to read it all when I finish this shift in four hours!

  11. Michael Grant just doesn’t get it does he?

All Henrik Larsson has said is that he will never walk out on Falkenbergs. In other words, he will honour his contract.

However, all it takes is for Celtic to enter discussions with the Swedish club and agree compensation and if acceptable, Falkenbergs will release Henrik from his contract. It happens all the time all over Europe. If that happens, Larsson could join Celtic now and he would not have dishonoured his contract.

So Henrik says he will honour his contract, and a professional football writer can’t even think beyond that and work out that waiting till November is simply not an option. If Celtic want him, they speak to his current employers and come to an agreement.

If it is true that Celtic are still speaking to Henrik, you can be sure they have also spoken to his club and will do again.

Typical SMSM. Unable to think things through. Just how much do these guys get paid?

Don’t know if anyone has come up with this one but why not give the managers job to Peter Lawell.

He’s practically the Director of Football anyway and it won’t cost us anything apart from buying him some cones and a bag of balls.

  18. Morning troops, early(ish) start in the Rebel County……weather glorious.

A cursory glance over the blog’s shoulder will reveal determined attempts by sleekit spoilsport(s) with ( very determined and technically dexterous) interchangeable pop-up personas – all of them unattractive and none of them tim-like in any shape or form.

In my opinion it’s an act – every bit as bogus as the tribute act. The foul language and aggression synonymous with the dark side – but part of a prepared script.

The motives are obvious – spoil the blog.

  19. Michael. I know the header is a bit of a joke PL was told to offer job to RK and he must have been thinking his cash cow of Celtic plc would be over when RK would have publicly been asking questions about him and his large bonus and salary

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  22. Aye Michael. We are going to win the league anyway and if we don’t get to CL then the manager can blame himself for not releasing the funds

He has been with us a few years now so must understand the offside rule ( although I think super salary still struggles with that one )

All he would need to do would not to play 4 2 4 and we would all be happy

He would even improve his balance sheet by not paying extra for a manager and then get more in his CEO salary

Maybe he might put out via Paul67 that Owen coyle would be a great Coach, then at last minute introduce himself from himself at a spin conference and we would all be ecstatic :))))
