Keane would have been unacceptable risk to Celtic

1098

What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week.  My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded.  Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.

Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.

The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape.  There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane.  We didn’t take him seriously………

I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic.  We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels.  We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy.  Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.

Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.

Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.

Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

    Sevconia reaches Japan:

‘He was thought to be the oldest man in Tokyo – but when officials went to congratulate Sogen Kato on his 111th birthday, they uncovered mummified skeletal remains lying in his bed.

Mr Kato may have been dead for 30 years according to Japanese authorities.

They grew suspicious when they went to honour Mr Kato at his address in Adachi ward, but his granddaughter told them he “doesn’t want to see anybody”.

Police are now investigating the family on possible fraud charges.’

  2. Re. Anniversaries. It’s 25 years today when the Communism collapsed for well. Freedom won in Poland on july 4th 1989. It was Poland first, then the other countries and finally the Berlin Wall was knocked down. No more fascism and communism, twin brothers at the power. What the memories from 25 years back !

Thanks for posting the link. Definitely a thought provoking and at times deeply sad social commentary programme.

I was brought up in this area 50 years or so ago and till the demolition started little had changed in the housing stock, although 99% of the industry had left.

The notorious family featured were also notorious 50 years ago. You knew from the beginning what Brian’s fate was liable to be.

However there was a lot of positive stuff in the programme, particularly the lady who became a councillor. Her enthusiasm for her community was magnificent and infectious. But the best, although possibly the most surprising part of the story, was the girl who went to the private school: this shows perfectly how adaptable we can be. Contrary to popular perception this wee girl from Bridgeton settled brilliantly into secondary one at a West End private school, so much so, and some may find this a wee bit sad or disturbing, that when after the summer holidays she returned to secondary 2 she admitted she no longer saw her primary school pals.

I would recommend watching this 3 part series and I would like to see a part 4 a year or so after games are finished.

  8. Seriously a we bit of realism required regarding the manager candidates……

It’s Celtic we are talking about….

Salary dependent on experience and ability……….Capped at £400K

Expectations; Win the treble & last 16 in Cham Lge……..Bonus £100K

    So who are the “between 5 & 10 canidates”……….4 are in house……..who else….do you believe PL’s statement?

    Expect;

Select from in house…………or maybe O.Coyle – Henrik

    Forget

Moyes , McKay or any other EPL ex-manager………Salary offer would rule them out.

All the above is so obvious……….look at our history in selecting managers……

A quick shout out for a documentary we produced at work and which is being shown on STV tonight at 8PM.

Silent Odyssey follows the story of Maths Teacher Gerry Hughes as he follows his lifelong dream to sail solo around the world. However, Gerry can neither hear nor speak which makes his journey all the more dangerous as he is completely dependent on computers to communicate with the world beyond his boat and as those computers begin to fail one by one as he faces mountainous seas, the tension of being potentially cast adrift with no means of communicating is evident.

Gerry sees some amazing sights on his 9 month journey but also faces the loneliness of the solo sailor and celebrates Christmas day on his own in the middle of the ocean.

The documentary is both moving and uplifting and shows one man’s determination to live a dream which takes him to the extremes of his chosen passion.

No sailor with speech and hearing difficulties had ever sailed solo around the world before and Gerry’s journey has been hailed as an inspiration to those who suffer similar difficulties in every day life.

  23. Top of the morning to you all from Fife where the suna ain’t shining but the torrential rain that was forecast isn’t here either.

Search for a new manager rumbles on but there is one crumb of comfort we can have in that if CQN opinion is taken into account by Celtic then Patrick Nevin will never darken our door in a managerial capacity.

  24. Dontbrattbakkinanger on

Paddy T- we need a fairly good manager to negociate the Euroqualies; the Club’s financial strategy relies on is gettin’ to the hard cash of the group stage to compensate for the shrapnel we get paid in TV rights.

Neil Lennon’s ECL success as Celtic manager came as a pleasant surprise to many, including myself.

-as for the domestic titles, we would win them with ole John Barnes at the helm.

Indulge me…in my Speech on this day 20 years ago I had to get Celtic in. Well I did, surprise surprise! So I had to say…Celtic until today were my first love but today they have been relegated to be an admirable close second…a very close thing…:)

CQN was not around then, what would I have said then…:)

God Bless Mrs. LB for suffering me these last 20 years. God Bless CQN for suffering me these last few years.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  28. I am always disappointed when CQN posters feel the need to tell us that Celtic will win the League easily .

We won it easily last year but I still enjoyed the football we played. Of course the competition is not so intense without the old Rangers but jumping on the MSSM bandwagon`s attempt to discourage Celtic supporters from attending is not very clever.
