What a lot of nonsense we’re been through since last week. My information was that we were interested in Roy Keane but no deal had been concluded. Martin O’Neill helpfully (cough) poured fuel on the fire by confirming he gave Roy permission to speak to Celtic, but despite several newspapers running the story that he was set to be appointed no later than today, the deal was never as close as reported.
Roy’s position on the short list was made time-critical by the fact that he was due to leave on tour with Ireland tomorrow, but talks continued in parallel with other targets.
The overwhelming reaction to yesterday’s news among the Celtic support was that we had a lucky escape. There was a Rangers fan who used to come onto the CQN comments section after Neil Lennon’s first season in charge and taunt us that Dermott Desmond was going to sack Neil and appoint Roy Keane. We didn’t take him seriously………
I’ve never been in the business of rubbishing Celtic players or managers before they arrive (although I’ve never backed a managerial appointment since starting CQN) but Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to Celtic. We have an excellent football infrastructure and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels. We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy. Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he is a tactical genius, or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable.
Although you can expect a daily drip of ‘news’, I don’t expect any actual news in the short-term.
Visit the CQN Bookstore to get Tommy Gemmell to sign your personal copy of his tome, All the Best.
Shout out to Frank O’Hagan, who supported the CQN Charity Golf Day with his music three years ago. He’s playing Glasgow Uni Union on Friday night, get along if you can.

Morning Celts.
I seldom regret that I’m not part of the twitter and facebook worlds but I have to say that the map of Europe in which this year’s champions are superimposed into each country looks really brilliant.
I saw it this morning on the twitter updates on the Video Celts site.

I`ll be doing some in-depth comparisons.
or,in actual fact………….
I`ll get my son onto it.:-)
Look on the bright side. We could be about to sign Kenny Miller.
Folly folly
Will do
Let’s change Paul’s header to what was really meant.
“Keane represented a huge and unacceptable risk to peter lawell . We have an football infrastructure controlled by Peter lawell and development strategy, with good coaches at all levels that follow what Peter says. We need a technically gifted tactician, capable of dovetailing with this strategy. Whatever Keane is, there is little evidence that he would not criticise peter or that he’s likely to dovetail with anyone else’s strategy that means sell sell sell and buy cheap projects to ensure AGM balance sheet is good. The potential disruption his unique brand of focus would bring could be considerable problems to peters bonus ”

I’m astounded of forehead if there are any Celtic supporters not renewing their ST for football reasons. Some of the football our team played last season was great to watch.

Peter Lawwell is only implementing the policies dictated by the small group of individuals who own and control the Club.
If they told him to spend like a sailor on shore leave that’s what he’d do.
Seville book, Tommy Gemmell’s All the Best and Yogi Bare among other books – all available now on http://www.cqnbookstore.com and any one would be a perfect Father’s Day gift. Order now for same day despatch…

Great work recently with the Lions:)
Quick observation – you have been one to drop many a hint about Celtic(and poss other clubs in Scotland) ‘leaving’ for a new playing environment and hinted that one day Lennon may get to manage in the EPL without leaving Celtic – well, now that that is clearly not going to happen, don’t you think that all hope of the playing environment for Celtic/other Scots clubs changing, even in the medium term future, is now non-existent? And that the kite flying is counter productive in that our efforts may be best spent improving the game where we are, in conjunction with all other clubs who live by the rules?!
Of course, we don’t have to close the door forever on structural change, but nothing seems to be forthcoming…
I read an article from 2004 and the article by Paul was about how Nike and other sponsors will use their influence to bring about such change. 10 years on it still looks like we’re banging our head against a brick wall. The chance may come, of course, when the EPL inevitably goes boom…by which stage, we’d only be joining to bail them out!
The Celtic SLO was saying on twitter that season ticket sales are going better than anticipated – we’ve sold more than at this time last year.

What’s all this crap about Celtic MUST now seek a lower profile candidate to take over from NFL?
It’s not his profile that matters, it’s his ability to get the best out of the players.
My local side here in Perth (Oz) employed a manager with a very high profile and he was really big on his PR. He had a great rapport with the fans, got himself on the MSM lots etc… but the team was utter crap and football to match.
(And no I don’t mean that hun of hunz, Ian Ferguson).
Give us a guy who can put a team on the park who can put the fear of God into our opponents.

Reading this post leads me to conclude that you believe Peter Lawwell employs Messr’s Desmond, O’Brien, Alison etc.
If this is the case, you’re under a misapprehension.
If this isn’t the case, which I’m sure it isn’t, then you know what you’ve posted is nonsense from a football and business perspective.
Ernie. His directions is to keep the debt down. He is not directed to parade the balance sheet at AGMs like a trophy. His directions are not to sell players and give manager no funds to replace the player ( see vic)
His personal cash cow which is Celtic plc continues to give him money by not caring what happens on the park

Given the length of time he’s been in post, and the number of managers we’ve had in that time, I am inclined to assume that the owners are happy with the way he operates.
Guyfakwes. No. But it is obvious that DD offered RK the position over PL head and PL cash cow would have been threatened
The leader above from PL via Paul67 is evidence of that

High profile managers can become a distraction. I would much rather have a low profile manager who does the job and lets the players on the pitch be the story. Look at what Mauricio Pochettino achieved at Southampton. Who had even heard of him a year or so ago?

Know where you are coming from – but how do Celtic maximise potential?

For manager
I hear you, but i am hearing that the named candidates believe HL in the pole position, talk in sweden coming to that view as well.
Dont shoot the messenger, Lawell looking at ST sales bums on seats and merchandising, hopes that structure in place will support HL just like it did NFL.
just sayin

Two consecutive posts from Ernie that I 100% agree with.
Hmmmm. Full moon? ;)
Do Celtic plc have to announce the appointment of a new manager to the Stock Exchange thingie?

Well, someone in here said in his estimation so far CFC have sold 20,000 ST, and at the start of the season they will have sold 30,000 , now I don’t agree with his estimation, but he is entitled to his opinion.
Ernie. What the owners want and the fans want is 2 different things
1. Fans want a well run plc and team on the park
2. Owners want a well run plc
That is the crux of the matter
On the ST sales, I went in yesterday to see if the seat next to me was available for my wee man, and I’d say my block (143) was at least 90% sold. Same for the nearby blocks.

I agree with Nick. I mean Ernie!
PL implements what the majority shareholders want.
Ernie,
My guess would be that they have to tell the thingy.
