Klimala and the Dembele-Edouard road

234

The January transfer window is set to burst into life today with the arrival of 21-year-old striker Patryk Klimala from Polish club Jagiellonia Bialystock.  Celtic met the €4m release clause.  The player has made 20 starts in top-flight football, among 51 starts in total.  Half of his appearances have been this season, as he made his breakthrough at Jagiellonia.

He is older and more experienced than Moussa Dembele and Odsonne Edouard were when they arrived in Glasgow, so his lack of match time will not be a worry for Celtic.  Both started promisingly and quickly improved.  The challenge now is to replicate the development work achieved with those two with Patryk.

Even fully fit, it is unreasonable to expect Odsonne to carry the load during what is likely to be a three-month spell where we play two games a week.  Patryk should get plenty game time during this period.  He also gives us the option of playing two strikers, a phenomenon we have seldom seen since the departure of Moussa.

  1. MCNUT – tend to agree with you. Leigh’s less than ideal private life for a professional athlete, along with his personal problems, have stopped him getting back to his brilliant best. The Club has stood by him throughout. But if he is not good enough to get a game, if he is not fit enough to play for 90 minutes and challenge Edouard for the strikers role then it is time to move on. There is only so long you can wait.

  2. Tontine Tim – As always a great read, thanks for that very informative post and I agree with the Gist of it, but everyone is entitled to their opinion of Mr Lawell, I know it’s hard to argue with the stats. Anyway and please excuse my ignorance so Deidco weren’t as sectarian in the early days of their formation, did they sign Catholics in those early days. A genuine question by the way I am not trying to be wide.

Re Leigh. If we thought for one monent, even the slightest doubt about him coming back, then he would not have been given a 4 year deal, 4 yrs! He’ll be back! por cierto.

His apparent problems did not materialise until after the Sept 18 contract was signed. I’m sure had those in power, i.e. Peter & Brendan known what was ‘bubbling under’, any new deal would have been put on hold. It was early December when Brendan called a halt.

That he was able to keep things under wraps until the £1m/year was signed & sealed is what niggles me.

I don’t see a comeback, would love it if there was – I afraid he now has the locker previously occupied by Derk & Marvin.

  10. Broadfoot and Kenny Clark wheeled in by McIntyre at Shortbread, to justify the MIB cheating, fkn laughable and predictable

  11. I’d have thought Lenny of all people would have given Leigh a bit more lee-way (sorry) being both himself fond of a pint when he was playing and also having experience of the sort of illness that seems to be hindering LG.

I remember Lenny swapping shirts at the end of a CL game and Rudy Gullit laughing in the studio at Lenny’s overhang over his shorts.

We have an excellent sport science department, most top clubs are very good at physical injuries these days but mental illness must present new challenges, and a completely different set of problems to what traditional sports medical prepares you for.

No doubt Celtic will approach it with the professionalism they show in every other part of the club, but it can’t be easy balancing the needs of the individual with those of the club

  12. We are very harsh on shavd and bayo given the need to acclimatise to new country, lack of game time, injuries and age. it’s a little early to be writing them both off. Same could be said for kouassi who has had many injury problems.

    Polish paddy may turn out great or he may not. the scouts and celtic have enough faith in him to part with 3.4 million. He ticks lot of boxes for celtic. Yes, we can all point to players that never did it. However, we could also pick out some very good players who fall into that group. Since 2010/11 season we have picked up lots of players aged 23 and under who were or contributed greatly including;

    Gk. Boruc, foster

    Rb. Lustig, Frimpong, Mathews

Cb. Vvd, ajer, Rogne, Boyata, Jozo, Eric

    Lb. izzy, taylor

Midfield. Wanyama, ledley, ntcham, Bitton, Kayal, Ki

Attacking mid. Rogic, Christie, Johanson, Amstrong

    Forward. dembele, eduard, Watt, Hooper

That list excludes the home grown kids who have also contributed greatly on the park and of it

Can you evidence your statement? If it’s a hunch/feeling then don’t.You are talking

Of a professional player and his relationship with his club.please stop smearing both.it is ok to feel like Leigh does, our club recognizes that.

That he was able to keep things under wraps until the £1m/year was signed & sealed is what niggles me.

//Utter nonsense mate.your implying Leigh pulled a fast one.tut tut.within Leighs contract with there will be a sickness and health insurance policy that will cover all illnesses both tangible(Can see) like leg breaks as well as illness that are unseen(mental)//

I don’t see a comeback, would love it if there was – I afraid he now has the locker previously occupied by Derk & Marvin.

  25. one of our biggest issues is with keeping players fit I have never known a squad to have as many injuries to new squad players , between scouting and basic coaching at defending, throw-ins and corner kick taking , just hope the Dubai trip was worth it.
