Kuhn and the 60 game threshold

199

If you are looking for a (football) gem, you need to do some (data) mining.  Jota was unearthed after a spell on the Valladolid bench.  For 18 months, Nicolas Kuhn (24) has ploughed a furrow on the Rapid Vienna right wing.  Just as Kuhn left Munich for Vienna, Rapid were deducted points for various financial failings, including not submitting accounts on a timely manner.

They currently occupy 6th spot in the Austrian Bundesliga, slightly closer to relegation than championship contenders.  For context, the side two places above them in the table had an average home crowd last season of 2,537.  Rapid are by far the best supported side in the country, but they are a model of disfunction.

Nicolas has made a total of 60 first team appearances, almost half of them in the German second tier (on loan from Bayern at Erzgebirge Aue).  How many appearances a player has made before joining Celtic is a metric you and I discuss often.  60 is just about enough to fire up some interesting stats and have the player scouted, but not so many that he will attract clubs from the wealthy leagues.

This has been his breakthrough season, he started less than half Rapid’s league games last term but has been first choice for all but one game this season (he was carrying a knock that day).  All I know for sure is that we are passing up players we like this month to concentrate on players we want.  If he arrives, he fulfils the latter category.

Also, he was born on the first day of the new millennium.  You feel old now, don’t you?

  1. Hello Thursday my old friend.

I’ve come to read the blog again.

    People chasing all the podiums.

Others fill their pipes with opium.

    When does Kuhnskelper arrive?

  2. All I know for sure is that we are passing up players we like this month to concentrate on players we want. If he arrives, he fulfils the latter category.

This has a touch of the P67 esoteric, yet if it means we are going to be much more focused on the players we are signing and what they can bring to the party, then that has to be good.

We can always ask what a Rapid squad player can bring to a UCL Club? Yet if thoroughly scouted then he could well improve our squad, players develop at different times, it’s always wise to keep a look out for a late developer.

As it happens the new Millennium strangely seems like a life time away for me – the world sure has changed…

    Hail Hail

A thread on Kuhn on a Rapid Vienna forum. Open in chrome and translate

    https://www.laola1.at/de/red/fussball/bundesliga/news/rapid-kicker-zaehlt-zu-den-besten–chance-creators–der-welt/

And an article about his stats – fourth best expected assists in the world (!)

Nicolas Kühn, a SK Rapid player, is listed in twelfth place (index value: 1.64). PSG’s Ousmane Dembele (2.36) leads the rankings ahead of Bayern’s Leroy Sane (1.92) and Bilbao’s Nico Williams (1.89).

If you only count the “Expected Assists per 90 minutes”, Nicolas Kühn even finds himself in fourth place. In front of him in the area are only Riyad Mahrez ( Al-Ahli ), Magnus Wolff Eikrem (Molde) and Gjermund Asen (Lilleström).

According to Rapid fans and his data he’s quick, creates chances, carrys the ball well and is good defensively. His finishing is not so good.

Rapid fans seem to like him.

  4. Is Kuhn to Abada the same as wot Johnston was to Juranovic ?

Mrs Quad and I are just back in from seeing the ‘Poor Things’ flick; a cross between Monty Python and Wes Anderson in some ways. Also, a modern twist on the Frankenstein fable with Willem Dafoe putting on an accent cribbed straight from Dr Finlay’s Casebook, and mars bars like a severely malkied Weegie.

  5. A positive development which will provide us with cover and hopefully push for that right wing position. Palma/Maeda on the left with Abada/Kuhn on the right is much more like it compared to seeing Forrest and MJ being called upon.

From reports this morning, we’re also looking at left back and striker this window. Which again is a necessity much more so than a want.

Unfortunately all appears very quiet on the keeper front. One injury to Hart and we’re looking at Bain. I’m not sure we should be in that position given our resources. It’s a material risk that should not be taken.

I’d back strong money that Kuhn and Abada are the same.

Subtle wee nod/dig to a certain Wolves “project” now plying his trade across the city?

Either way, as long as “we” includes the manager then hurrah!

“Also, he was born on the first day of the new millennium. You feel old now, don’t you?”

I have felt old for more years than I care to remember. Then I read posts on here with the lyrics to the Harry Hood song and I feel a wee big younger :)

Were we not linked with the Ipswich keeper or was that agent/paper talk.

A Coventry fan I work with says he is pyour kwalitee.

I’d also heard rumours of O’Leary.

Too many rumours! Give us some white smoke already please Celtic.

  9. If Abada wants to go,it should be on our terms,6 months into a new contract, we should double our money ,what’s that about sport and politics don’t mix……?

  10. Not posted in quite some time.

Miovski rumored to be staying at Aberdeen, too bad, he’s a good one.

Why don’t we approach Aberdeen and offer them Turnbull as part of a deal for Miovski, it seems Turnbull has fallen down the pecking order, as they say.

    Aye.

Similar to Chairbhoy, Pablo – I don’t know enough about the inner workings of our recruitment to put any more than a fag paper between “like” and “want” in this context.

    Hello all,

Hope this Kuhn guy comes in flying or many folks will just add the letter T to the end of his name and that will be him finished. The state of Alabama, the Crimson part, is in mourning today at the announcement that Coach Nick Saban is retiring from coaching American Throwball. For those of you that do not know who he is, he is probably the greatest College Football coach ever, and a very good Catholic man to boot, who never misses mass on a Sunday( wish I could say the same) He is the youngest looking 72 yr old, and deserves to enjoy his retirement. In his announcement. Coach Saban was quoted as saying, ” I miss not being able to watch the Bhoys consistently every weekend with all the traveling that my job has. I hate watching the games on Celtic TV replay, as I can’t watch without knowing what the score was, so I peek onto Celtic Quick News on gamedays to see how my Bhoys are doing. His wife Terry, said that he can now justify walking around the house in his hoops, swigging from a bottle of imported luxury Buckfast wine, and shouting Durty masonic Barstewards at the top of his voice.” It is expected that the Tuscaloosa Celtic Supporters club, will now form a bus for all away games for those interested.

    Hail hail my friends

    Has Kuhn signed yet?

    What’s the hold up?

    Why all the dithering?

    Have Sevco entered the race?

Heads should roll if we don’t get this deal over the line.

  22. Every player at Aberdeen is for sale if the price is right and we need a striker.

The chances are that Aberdeen will soon have a new manager and he will require funds.

In the January window a new striker would satisfy me. Easier said that done in January, however we have already talked the talk.
