La Liga president steps into Catalonia debate

719

President of La Liga in Spain has stepped into the Catalonian independence referendum debate by saying if Catalonia became independent clubs from that region, notably Barcelona and Espanyol, would have to leave the Spanish league and compete within their new domestic boundaries.

This claim is without foundation as multinational ‘domestic’ leagues are authorised by Uefa, Fifa and the EU, while Spanish clubs are able to compete with foreign clubs in European competition, but this intervention is likely to be one of the more emotive topics in the Catalonian debate.  Would Barcelona fans vote for Catalan independence if it required them to withdraw from the Spanish league and hand back their status as one of the game’s world powers?  Some would, some wouldn’t.

Football is the key cultural touchstone of European nations.  Those who want to preserve the Spanish nation know this.  Excluding Scottish clubs from the England and Wales football market has an enormous commercial impact on top-flight clubs here.  It also means that our key cultural touchstone is Scottish.

Those who want to build a cohesive UK would be more productive by working to end the exclusion of Scottish clubs from the England and Wales league than telling nationalists they would be wrong to hold another referendum.

Popcorn and ginger on hand for the latest Newco Rangers episode.  Flash mobs and EGMs, all destined to further tear the club apart.  As we’ve said here for years, internecine strife is the only thing that can really damage a club. That lot seem to have a infinite supply of the stuff.

  1. Also worth remembering that ex deidco players can be asked to pay back their EBTs at any time… so none of them talk down their ex club on fear of a reminder letter dropping on the mat.

  2. Only in Scotland would you be laughed at and made fun of if you request that the athletes/sportsmen you are being paid to manage refrain from eating chips.

    If I read this right…

If Catalonia became independent from rSpain, Catalonian teams can still play in the Spanish league (due to multinational ‘domestic’ league precedents).

Therefore, since Scotland has chosen not to become independent from rUK, Scottish teams should be allowed to play in the UK league.

The main problem with an informal fallacy is that it often stems from a flaw in reasoning that renders the conclusion unpersuasive. This is no exception.

    ====================

My reading is that why should Scottish Companies operating under the same UK laws as similar companies in other parts of the UK, be denied access to the same market as those other companies?

Got nothing to do with Catalonia.

I agree. I dont have a problem with what BBJ or CS.There is an element of spin from the SMSM to exagerate what they say to be as negative as possible. My pet hate in Scottish Media is always how every Celtic person is referred to by their surname only and yet the dead club personnel always called by their first name.

I assume you are happt to start at the bottom?

It would be a no from me. I would rather make our own league better. Celtic will have to compete with teams spending £50m+ on players and £100k+ a week in wages to compete for the EPL title. I don’t think our present board or the fans would be happy with that and certainly wouldn;t be happy with £50k+ a week players in the stand. That bubble down there will burst and some big names will slide down the leagues and into money problems just like Leeds Utd. Their game is rotten to the core and will not last when the TV money goes. Most leagues in Europe have seen past the buying success route and will get the benefits in years to come. The EPL is destroying the English game.

  10. I’m really uncomfortable about people using the bread and circuses of football as a way of appeasing an unhappy people. Likewise, people threatening clubs as a means of gaining political leverage is shallow and cynical.

While there are foodbanks, illegal wars, zero hours contracts and so on I think it’s facile to suggest letting Scotland into the English Premiership is a way of uniting the peoples of the ‘UK’. Our problems are much more serious than whether or not we join the debt mountain of the EPL.

I don’t want Celtic to play in an English/British league. We are a Scottish team and the bigger stage is Europe.

This would give even more grist to the mill (whatever that is) of those who, for a variety of reasons, would like a UK national team. I’m depressed enough after the referendum without this nonsense.

Chris Sutton had a 28% win rate when he managed Lincoln City before throwing his toys from the pram, before he was bumped. John Hartson rejected the chance to be manager of East Stirling.

Perhaps they’ll go on to better things than poisoned pen pushing and the SMSM national pastime of Celtic baiting. Maybe they even believe what they write, having been gifted and lifted from ignominy, to play for one of the world’s largest football club’s and providing sterling service, doesn’t stop you having to earn a crust, even at the expense of upsetting the faithful.

They are realtively young guys. They can still make a name in management for themselves. Hartson was well thought of at Wales whilst coaching there. Comes across well on the TV as well.

Hartson was on the short list for the Ross County job too.

People are being helluva harsh on these guyts for giving an honest opinion. I would rather they did that than just praise everything about the club. They are giving their own views. Just because they are former players we don;t always have to agree with them. They care about Celtic and state their opinion at that time. Remember they are mates with Lenny and they are probably a bit miffed that their friend wasn’t backed with decent funds. There is more to these things than sticking the boot into Celtic or Ronny. Also the SMSM will put their own slant on it with the headline grabber but we have all had a lifetime of experience with that. It is nothing new.

Had to laugh at Keane having a go at Hartson in his book for eating crisps and a fizzy drink after the Clyde debacle. I honestly think its a shame that we didn’t get Keane & Ronny together. They do sing from same hymn book and it could have worked, Anyhow I know “If my Aunty had Baws” etc. I hate International breaks, really hate them, seems ages till Ross County game.

But would you or I, take a fee to moligate RD with the full knowledge of the editorial licence to twist?

That’s the way it’s viewed by the Celtic fan in the street, for a manager who let’s face it, has worked wonders compared to CS or JH.

It’s ‘daily record’ conveyor belt of ex Celt’s to put the boot in. Why don’t we find the ex Celt happy clapper, who’ll commend the new fitness regime, denigrate chip eaters, and say that RD’s team line up’s and tactics are masterclass *ok I took that too far*.

No ex Celts out there willing to back a truly young manager introducing a new Celtic culture?

JH and CS are best ignored and only make it via cyberspace because very, very few Celtic fans buy into Red Top newspapers.

Bognor bhoy. How you doing P. Funny thing is the Mrs never got her operation today. I took her in to the western at 7.30am she is told that she is 3rd on the list. I’m told to go as she is going to the ward and surgeon etc will be along to see her shortly. 2 hours later she calls me to come and pick her up. Now when I left her there were about 10/12 people waiting to be admitted and the nurses sheets were 3 pages long. Anyway upshot is because she was not in serious pain they will now look at doing operation in January. But if it gets real bad again to call the surgeons secretary right away for admission.

“The reason Ronny went public with it is simple………..its to cover up the total shambles that we have seen so far…..”

Not that simple because he did not “break” the story to cover up anything.

He reacted to the story being out there. Not responding would not have kept this in house and quiet.

I liked the sign of a fighting man in answering back his critics but I fear that the “diet revolution” has become the story, not just with the press, but with our fans, especially the critical ones.

The truth is that there has been no major dramatic diet revolution. All coaches emphasised healthy and timely eating. Most players paid a bit of lip service to the advice just as they do with advice about investing their money and not gambling it away.

It is all a bit of froth and quite unimportant in the scheme of things wherever the line is drawn from a food free-for-all policy to a strict Vegan diet. All he did was take chips off the Lennoxtown menu. A determined player can still eat chips if he wants too. Players still openly eat pies in the hospitality lounges at CP so there is no draconian measure and no real reason for revolt over the food menu.

It’s all about the football, really. The rest is a sideshow.
