Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

In November 1922, while Clementina Churchill was campaigning in Dundee for her husband, someone released “electric snuff” at a open forum meeting causing a mass sneezing fit.

after patronizing the crowd and accusing them of taking advantage of Mr Churchill’s illness, they *really* turned on her.

Woman in crowd: “Play the game, hen. Play the game. Dinna use that sentimental argument about yer man being ill.”

Clementina Churchill left the meeting hall to Irish Republican songs and cheering for De Valera.

And Churchill was run out of town, after losing the election to Edwin Scrymgeour, Britain’s only Prohibitionist MP!

  3. From what I’ve heard, Belgium seems to be enthusiastic about combining their league with the Dutch league but for some reason, the Dutch less so.

Also, we’re talking about two leagues outwith the “Big 5”. We might have more chance joining with the Scandinavian Leagues and maybe even the Benelux League but the EPL simply doesn’t want us. That has been made perfectly clear.

  4. A Hibee I follow on Twitter recently posted the highlights of a 3-0 victory at Ibrox when Broonie was still there. I never realized how much pace he had – lowenkrands could barely keep up with him

I remember being very excited at the prospect of signing “the twins,” and being disappointed on missing out on Thomson who I thought was the better player. There was a Hun song “half the price and twice the player” about Thomson.

It’s a mark of the man that although he had been offered a deal at Celtic a while ago and despite what reports say were the best efforts of our CEO, about whom Broonie always speaks very highly, he chose to take the less comfortable route.

  5. I’ll never forget broonie losing his sister, keeping his profile low and getting on with it – an inspiration. Hope he transforms aberdeen

Firstly I would say – the SNP have form for centralising & controlling, education is no different.

Without the Barnett Formula there would be swingeing cuts to services in Scotland. The “it’s the fault of Kafflik schools” lobby is wide and deep-rooted. With money scarce in a de facto bankrupt new country – out of the UK, out of EU, new currency, or, Sterlingisation, no credit history, no established central bank, UK business & our financial sector moving south – do you think the call to save money, consolidate education, shut expensive & unnecessary schools would be resisted? It would be a popular policy with the vast majority of the Scottish population – SNP are populist Nationalists.

On the economic argument – if there was a coherent economic policy for independence, the SNP would be shouting it from the rooftops EVERY day & plastering it on EVERY billboard they could get their hands on.. that they’re not should tell you something.

Education in NI ‘divided and splintered’, says Ulster University report.

Northern Ireland’s education system is “divided, splintered and overly expensive”, according to an Ulster University (UU) research paper.

The paper from UU’s Unesco Education Centre argues that “vested interests of the churches and the traditional political blocs” must be reformed.

The New Decade New Approach (NDNA) deal had said the education system – with a range of sectors and school types – was “not sustainable”.

    Now substitute Scotland for NI.

  13. The only expensive and unnecessary schools that I can think of are Fettes, Merchiston, Gordonstoun etc. All the state schools seem fairly necessary.

  20. A very good friend of mine lives just outside Milan, he’s a journo with a small local newspaper. Been there for yonks and has a gorgeous wife, but that’s bye the bye!!!

He was telling me that he’s heard a lot of talk linking Fabio Copella with Celtic. As I write, he is beavering away trying to put some wheels on this story.

I must admit, that would be a great call
