Leader, motivator. One more for the captain

769

Spending £4.4m on a 22-year-old Hibs midfield player in 2007 was a significant demonstration of faith by Gordon Strachan and Celtic.  A year later, Rangers owner, David Murray, said he was not prepared to meet the wages Celtic offered for Scott Brown, a player both clubs wanted to sign.

Murray was not known for underplaying his financial clout, this comment felt more like a taunt, implying Celtic were rash in spending so much on a player who was still bedding into life at the top.  That first season at Celtic ended with Scott watching Barry Robson play a magnificent cameo as Celtic came from behind to win the title, the first of 22 major honours won as Celtic player and captain.

His off-field persona could not be further from the strutting bulldog he is on the park.  Mixing with fans he is understated and generous with his time, there are no signs of the laser-focussed leader he becomes in short sleeves.

The No. 6 role does not provide many scoring opportunities but Scott has had his fair share.  Defenders never figured that showing him onto his (apparently) weaker left was not a good idea.  If you close your eyes and picture his goals you’ll repeatedly see him drop the shoulder before striking with his left.

The passage of a decade probably diminishes the importance in my memory of a Scottish Cup equaliser, when he led 10 men off the ropes at Ibrox, somehow the joy of a last minute winner against Hamilton feels more important than the rest.

Captain for 11 years, he motivated and disciplined the playing squad.  He led by example of professionalism; the kind of player every manager loves to have in the squad.

In Celtic history there is only one captain who could relate to leading men through such a period of domination, Billy McNeill.  Billy was also 35 when he left Celtic, also after the first title loss in a decade.  Our greatest captain went out held shoulder high after winning the Scottish Cup.  Scott Brown deserves no less.  One more for the captain.

  2. Scariest moment was in The Jungle for Rapid Vienna game.Wouldnt have been a huge crowd compared the 100,000 games but maybe 50k but felt as if half of the Jungle were trying to get on the pitch to get at Krankl and his cheat. Our barrier broke but didnt completely snap or it would have been worse.

  3. Just a few words(never be enough) to thank you all on the kind word, scores of texts and calls to me and my family on the loss of my mam.

  9. Celtic40me, the Huns thomson song sounds a parody of our old Harry Hood one. Allegedly when we were interested in the “twins” a former Celtic and Hibbee star warned us off thomson.

Me too. That night in the Jungle was unbelievable. The Hunger Strikers campaign was at a fervour as was the Miners Strike. I was only 10 (ed- nearly 11) and my feet hardly touched the ground, .

After the match, at Bridgeton Station there was absolute mayhem. Oldco Rangers were playing that night in a European match. Der Hun were trying to break through the lines at the Cross and the Celtic support at the train station were doing their best to get through the station and onto the platform.

The English Polis (they were swapped out for their Scottish bretherin sent to the deal with their local coal miners) couldnt give a feck about the huns and trapped as I was behind enemy lines ( I went for a chippy at the wrong side of the line) I took great delight in watching their heads getting bashed in. It was the most beautiful hour of my life.

  11. HOT SMOKED – cheers for your post. Yes I do receive some ‘stick’ from the usual ‘stick givers’ – suppose it’s easier that debating points with me as it involves almost zero thinking.

Don’t know what you mean A. Thought it was a breeze. That was the last time I plunked school for a game. Kipped overnight at Wemyss Bay and got the first ferry back to Bute only to find our old headmaster had done the same. First time I thought he was human and it tournedos out his hard man act was just that. A right good Tim underneath.

    Hope you are all well.

What’s the opposite of “health and safety gone mad”?

freedom to make your own choices,

Education in NI ‘divided and splintered’, says Ulster University report.

Northern Ireland’s education system is “divided, splintered and overly expensive”, according to an Ulster University (UU) research paper.

The paper from UU’s Unesco Education Centre argues that “vested interests of the churches and the traditional political blocs” must be reformed.

The New Decade New Approach (NDNA) deal had said the education system – with a range of sectors and school types – was “not sustainable”.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

With all respect – you don’t know what you are talking about. Catholic Education has done more to keep the lid on things in the North than anything else, and it has also promoted peace and reconciliation. It is dangerous to explain anti-Catholicism in the North of Ireland on the existence of Catholic schools. Just as it is stupid to explain anti-Catholicism in Scotland on the existence of Celtic.

    Now substitute Scotland for NI.

It was relatively calm when we got to Bridgeton, but the queue was to big for us kids. We were hungry having missed out on our tea and Pils Lamot consumed didnt do us any favours. A decent Hun saved my mates from getting a right doing as we came out from the chippy. He took them to the Polis line. I wasnt wearing colours so wasnt noticed among the melee. I could take great delight watching the English Polis battering feck out the huns. I reckon I’m unique in watching Polis battering fcuk out of huns at the bandstand, Bridgeton Cross.

My overriding memory of this Cup Final was that there were the usual dozen Celtic fans from Bute attending the game and maybe another 4 or 5 joining in. That other crowd usually had the same dozen travelling up to games but all of a sudden there were 60 or 70 of them coming out of the woodwork for a final.Laughed my head off on the return ferry home as they tried to rouse a chorus of the sash as we sang “There’s Only One King Billy…… If I didn’t detest them before, that boat journey nailed it for me. Detestable then, even more detestable now.
