LEGEND BACKS GORDON

CELTIC legend Davie Hay has agreed with Hoops goalkeeping great Pat Bonner that Craig Gordon should start at Hampden on Sunday.

The Republic of Ireland international icon insisted the comeback shotstopper was a better bet than on-loan Scott Bain to face Sevco Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final, as reported in CQN yesterday.

And former manager and player Hay is going along the same line of thinking and also gave his verdict on who should spearhead the attack.

He said: “If I was picking the team, I think I would be going for Moussa Dembele leading the line and Craig Gordon in goal.

“It will be a close call between Dembele and Griffiths and I thought Griffiths looked quite fresh when he come and scored the winner against Hamilton Accies last Sunday.

“However, for me, Dembele just edges it going into these games. He has so much power and aggression when he is on his game and I think he might get the nod to start.

“That isn’t to say that the two of them might not end up on the pitch at the same time. In last season’s semi-final they featured together in the second period to great effect and you would never rule out a change of plan as the game goes on, albeit that they won’t start together.”

Hay added: “As for the goalkeeping situation, if Gordon is fit then I would play him.

“Again, and I know I say this often, but if Brendan Rodgers is watching them train day-in, day-out then he will know where they are, but it is Gordon’s experience for me in a game like this that would swing it.

“As for the game itself, what you do have to say is that if Celtic go out and play to their full potential, then they should walk off the pitch having put themselves into the Scottish Cup Final and within touching distance of a back-to-back treble.”
