Legends, history, £6k and tens of thousands of Celtic fans

1401

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the 9-in-a-row CQN Charity Golf Day at Aberdour in Fife, yesterday.  The event, auctions and raffles leading up to it raised £6000, the bulk of which will go to the 1254125 appeal, while some will go to Clic Sargent, who help families with children with that dreadful disease.

Lisbon Lion, Willie Wallace, and his wife Olive, were fantastic guests, who enjoyed spending a day with 70 or so friends.  It doesn’t matter how far away Lisbon Lions live, you always find them the same way.

My sincere thanks to everyone who came along, bid of the auctions or bought a raffle ticket, all in aid of people you will never know. Thank you from all of us to John, Kevin and John, for their stressful work in pulling the event together, for the ninth year!

125 years ago a handful of people, living in a community devastated by hunger, destitution and TB, but who could make a difference, decided they would make a difference.  As a result, Celtic was born.  Celtic is not just something to brighten up your weekends, it’s not purely there to build friendships or to create common-interests across the generations, it is a movement you are required participate in.

The clarion call to all Celtic fans this year is to do more than just put your hand in your pocket, the spirit which gave birth to the concept of Celtic will only survive if those who can get involved, inspire a fresh generation by doing so.

Go register for 1254125, and commit to doing something to raise £125.  It can be anything.  You can walk a 1888 meters, go to the barbers and get a baldy to celebrate the signing of Amido Balde, it doesn’t need to be as ambitious as the 150 brave souls who right this very moment are atop Ben Nevis about to undertake the world’s highest huddle.

If you believe in this club, don’t leave it to someone else to take care of what’s important.  The same goes for your season ticket.  It has been over a century since we have been as close to the founding spirit of our club, but the sporting dramas which inspire us all are not achieved by new strikers, they are the fruits of tens of thousands fans buying season tickets.

Go stake your claim on Celtic.

Ha….I bet he sold him the elastic band?

My dad is most definitely to blame for my gambling addiction. He took a young twisty (I reckon I was about 9 or 10) to Lanark races. As he was also taking a few relatives, he needed to make 2 runs in the car. So he dropped me off with my friend, gave us some money, and went back to collect the others.

The races hadn’t started at Lanark, however, there was cross course betting taking place elsewhere. I had a glance at the bookies board, had no clue what any of it meant, so just picked the name of a horse I liked and asked the bookie if I could put a shilling on it. He took my money!!

Anyhow it won at 20/1, so when my dad returned, I was already £1 up.

The trainer of that winning horse was called Arthur Budgett, who co-incidentally passed away not so long ago.

I was hooked though, foolishly thinking how easy it was to win money.

I don’t know whether to admire that bookie for paying me out, or despise him for taking my bet!

What I do know is that I was enthralled by the jockeys colours, the buzz, the excitement.

It’s never lost it’s allure for me. Would spend all day every day at the course if I could!

If there is any truth in the story that Southampton have tabled an 8 Million bid for Gary Cooper Celtic should jump at it.If Hooper had wanted to stay with us he would have signed a new contract by now I have to admitt I am not his biggest fan but 8 Million for somone who could walk away in 12 months for nothing would be a good bit of business in my view.H.H.

I emailed Celtic today and got a very swift response. Looks like my old mans is going in next to Jinky! Should be next 2-3 weeks. He will be delighted to be at Jinky’s feet.

Thanks for posting that earlier. Timely reminder to contact CFC. Only paid for it in February!!!

  7. I like Gary Hooper very much. He is a natural finisher and they seem to be a bit of a dying breed in these days of non-scoring strikers. I love the way Hooper plants his standing foot before striking for goal.

He looks to me to have been well coached.

    I hope he stays.

Ah the allure of the track !!!!

Everything about it,the smell of the grass when you arrive, the jockeys colours, the sheen of the horses coats, the characters huddled in groups of 2 or 3 whispering secret conspiracies about who will win the next, the roar of the crowd as they come round the final bend, the adrenalin rush when you see your horse move into contention approaching the last jump, the agony the ecstasy,

    never again,I’m sick of this

Agreed. I think if £8m had been tabled, Gary would currently be on the M6 in the back of Peter Lawell’s car.

Anyhow, I see we may be buying a defender from Groningen. That makes me very happy (assuming he is decent)

Ironic that I have been pleading for a defender since Oldtim was known as Youngtim, and they decide to shop in Groningen, a place I spend a lot of time working. Had they said, I’d have brought a defender back with me years ago…..

Any chance you can make Hamilton on 13th July? I cant remember if I mailed you to ask you or not?

Oh yes, all of the stuff you say registers…and some. I was running the bookies “clocks” for them when I was only 12! Everyone used to think I had a tin lunchbox on me constantly at the weekends, not knowing it was actually the clock tin and contained a small fortune (relative) in betting stakes.

I got paid for running the clock, and then often paid a tip when a punter had some returns.

I am based in Groningen, the cities colours are Green and White as are the football teams. I have asked a few of my Groningen FC supporting colleagues about Van Dijk and all have had positive things to say about him. They are somewhat concerned as they just lost another of their young talents ‘Bacuna’ who has just signed for Aston Villa. Hopefully a Celtic trip to play Groningen will be part of the deal. Its a great wee city.

Had work to do yesterday . Started @ 9 am / it was @ 30 . By noon it had hit 35 .. I started pouring with sweat . I couldn’t see for the sweat in my eyes. I really wanted to chuck it and retreat indoors but had to keep on keeping on . It was worrying —–it is only going to get hotter.

Felt really washed out after I’d finished . Went to the beach and cooled down in the sea . Fell asleep on the beach .afterwards . Woke up feeling hot and bothered .
