Legia frustration spills onto Celtic

1640

In a press conference today, Legia major shareholder, Dariusz Mioduski, has been scathing about Celtic, who benefited from Legia’s mistake last week.  Perhaps his most important comment was, “The football family of Legia are all suffering now.  Their dreams are shattered, it’s against football values”.

There can be no doubt that Legia are suffering and that their punishment was in no way proportional to their mistake.  Some of this hurt is inevitably going to find its way to Celtic, who Legia apparently asked to withdraw from the tournament before the Disciplinary Committee sat.  Celtic, Legia inform us, declined to respond.  My understanding is that the rules do not allow for input from the losing team when a suspended player has been involved – as they do when an ineligible player is involved.

Former Juventus-great and current chief of the Polish FA Zibi Boniek had earlier said, “Everyone thoroughly looked into this matter, but Michel Platini and Giorgio Marchetti [from Uefa]said one thing, ‘Zibi, there is no backdoor.  Nothing.  Regulations do not provide for any other penalty.  We are very sorry’.”

If there was a possibility Celtic could choose to forgo their place in favour of Legia, Celtic would be presented with a moral dilemma, but I don’t think the club’s actions would be any different.  Their reluctance to ‘pick up the phone’ to Legia suggest as much.

One area where Mioduski’s information differs from Celtic’s is where he states “No-one at UEFA in Nyon was even considering a 3-0 forfeit Celtic win on the morning of the ruling.”  I understand Celtic were told the exact opposite, that a forfeit was the only outcome possible, corroborating what Platini and Marchetti told Boniek.

Our very best wishes to Fraser Forster, who yesterday became a Southampton player.  Southampton have an enormous rebuilding exercise ahead after selling the majority of their first team players this summer.  They now have a good keeper, who I expect will be busy in the opening months of the season.

After my article yesterday on Fraser Forster’s dedication to his work, a CQN’er sent me this nugget:

“My brother used to go to the dancing with Jinky.  He would go to Jinky’s to collect him and Jimmy would be all suited up, apart from wearing his sand shoes, as he would be practicing his dribbling while waiting to be picked up”.

There are no shortcuts to brilliance.

    I was at that game too. Raging. Couldnae believe we lost 3-1,cheating bassas.

    My Dad’s mate said-No? Well,read it in the papers the morra.

    One slight difference in our recall is that MUNRO was left on his ample arse around the centre-circle and Greig was offside when Cooper(?) passed to him.

    Jock Stein came onto the pitch to centre the ball for the restart cos the players were as p’d off as the fans!

  2. Yeah…like the hearts manager…we should be highlighting their impossible world record honest mistakes. ..at every

    opportunity.

    Its blatant….but the deatails of their cheating is in plain sight.

    Ridiculous that they get away with it so easily.

    Nah, Im gonnae play yer ‘nitpicking-game’ with ye and, also chin ye by telling ye that, Mr Stein ‘didny’ centre the ball – that’s just havering.

    Although, I remember being at Ibrox one day and it was the huns who were invading the pitch, on several ocassions and Jock Wallace centred the ball.

    Hope that helps.

    Pretty sad, but justified, that such advice has to be given on a Celtic site.

    As a post script to the Bobby Lennox leg break. I remember BL telling that when he woke in his hospital bed the next day, the first visitor he had was Big Break-a-Leg.

    “Mind you, I think he was there just to make sure ma leg was REALLY broken” was how Bobby put it.

    Sevco didn`t get a penalty;

    Despite poor form Mulgrew will start somewhere. Also think McGregor and Matthews will get a place in starting 11.

    Lustig at centre half, if fit, and Forrest to start on bench as he can be no where near 100% ready yet.

  22. Joe Filippis Haircut on

    I think bringing in players on loan with an option to buy is a sensible move for both parties it allows the player time to see if he fits in and likes his new surroundings it allows the club to see if the player is what they are looking for.Also it should mean we dont get lumbered with under performing players so whats not to like ? With the club being limited in terms of the money available for transfer fees and wages, the concept of a loan deal for a high-level player possibly out of favour at a bigger team might seem appealing.

    Deila, who has been linked in Spain with a temporary move for the Villarreal winger Javier Aquino, is not sold on the idea.

    “Everything is an opportunity, but a loan is not ideal because you don’t want to develop other teams’ talent and not get any money for it,” he said.

    —-

    Two loan signings and a free agent since he took over

    It’s all a bit worrying how Ronny says one thing and does another. Same with ripping the team apart for Legia after stating there would be no major changes. I would also offer his ridiculously naive talk of us not only beating big teams in the CL, but dominating them, a few hours before the first leg of our record defeat on aggregate in europe.

    I agree, as i think Tonev and Berget are still some distance away from being ready.

    It was more a punt at a possible line-up, with everyone available (exclusion of Brown).

    By all accounts Tonev and Berget are wide players, which is what we’ve needed, as we only have Forrest and Boeriggter on the books (and Boeriggter is a bigger cheat than Legia if u ask me.)

    Stokes has the look of somebody who doesnt want to be here… Huge question marks are circulating regards Griffiths long term involvement. And there obvious questions asked of Commons, because the club havent offered an extended contract. I would surmize that C.McGregor will at some point take Commons place in the team. But with all that said, we must surely still be pursuing a main Striker …

    Bobby, a few years back, you were on her chatting with sumdy and, you let it be known that, you got on with every poster on the blog apart from one who comes on in the morning and – sooks all the goodness out the blog – your words.

    In addition to that, you told whoever it was ye were talking to that you had contacted Paul 67 to keep an eye on my conduct – despite all yer denials ever since.

    Don’t make the mistake of taking me for a fool.

    That’s not a threat, just a fact.

    You go your way, I’ll go mine.

    Here endeth the connection.

  28. A worry (of sorts) I have is with our defence.

    Craig Gordon will be under greater scrutiny than is necessary;

    Mikael Lustig has not looked anything like as good as he can be;

    Efe receives far too much stick for trying to play football thereby making the occasional error. This, the groans from the stands, will affect him;

    Virgil is not impressing;

    Emilio doesn`t really defend.

    The uncertainty at the back just might be the reason for the amount of mistakes being made elsewhere on the pitch.

    I have confidence that our new manager has what it takes but a return to form from certain players would help. Support and patience from the crowd would be no bad thing either.

  31. Hibs fans adament that Griffith’s will be there on loan by the end of the window.

    I think Griffith’s would be open to the move. Makes no sense to me. I would keep him and play him up front this midweek.

    Give the Bhoy a chance. He knows where the goals are.

    Tried and trusted are required until the new Bhoys settle and it looks like there are a few on the way.

    LB

  32. Jungle Jim…

    depending on the shape / formation chosen by the Manager, there could be scope for playing Matthews at right mid. Scope also for Efe to be tried at Right Back, as even Nigeria dont see him as a centre half. And Lustig, given his hip surgery last year, could possibly be tried at Centre Half, which u would think involves less running.

    Either way, they need to reach a solution fast, both in defending and attacking.
