Legia frustration spills onto Celtic

1640

In a press conference today, Legia major shareholder, Dariusz Mioduski, has been scathing about Celtic, who benefited from Legia’s mistake last week.  Perhaps his most important comment was, “The football family of Legia are all suffering now.  Their dreams are shattered, it’s against football values”.

There can be no doubt that Legia are suffering and that their punishment was in no way proportional to their mistake.  Some of this hurt is inevitably going to find its way to Celtic, who Legia apparently asked to withdraw from the tournament before the Disciplinary Committee sat.  Celtic, Legia inform us, declined to respond.  My understanding is that the rules do not allow for input from the losing team when a suspended player has been involved – as they do when an ineligible player is involved.

Former Juventus-great and current chief of the Polish FA Zibi Boniek had earlier said, “Everyone thoroughly looked into this matter, but Michel Platini and Giorgio Marchetti [from Uefa]said one thing, ‘Zibi, there is no backdoor.  Nothing.  Regulations do not provide for any other penalty.  We are very sorry’.”

If there was a possibility Celtic could choose to forgo their place in favour of Legia, Celtic would be presented with a moral dilemma, but I don’t think the club’s actions would be any different.  Their reluctance to ‘pick up the phone’ to Legia suggest as much.

One area where Mioduski’s information differs from Celtic’s is where he states “No-one at UEFA in Nyon was even considering a 3-0 forfeit Celtic win on the morning of the ruling.”  I understand Celtic were told the exact opposite, that a forfeit was the only outcome possible, corroborating what Platini and Marchetti told Boniek.

Our very best wishes to Fraser Forster, who yesterday became a Southampton player.  Southampton have an enormous rebuilding exercise ahead after selling the majority of their first team players this summer.  They now have a good keeper, who I expect will be busy in the opening months of the season.

After my article yesterday on Fraser Forster’s dedication to his work, a CQN’er sent me this nugget:

“My brother used to go to the dancing with Jinky.  He would go to Jinky’s to collect him and Jimmy would be all suited up, apart from wearing his sand shoes, as he would be practicing his dribbling while waiting to be picked up”.

There are no shortcuts to brilliance.

  1. Just got my ticket direct from St Johnstone. Notice the game is live on sky-sports5!!!

Didnt know there was such a channel.

Tonev will need to show more fight and skill than he did for Villa . Not convinced about him but hope I’m wrong.

ruggyman. The Commons situation is strange in as much as he says he wants a new contract to stay at Celtic. However, other teams appear to be interested in the player if Celtic dont see a long term future at Parkhead for the player in my opinion they should sell him while they can. H.H.

  3. !!Bada Bing!!

I am not interested in them to be honest. I think Griffith’s will get 30 goals this season. If the manager decides his off field antics are not to his liking though I can see a loan happening.

  5. I’ve just looked at the UEFA website and it says the game against Maribor is on either 19th/20th and 26/27th of August. I’ve got to book my days off so have to be more specific, does anyone know the actual days?

I know, thats my understanding of the situation. The club have dragged their heels on offering him a new deal. Not sure why. Was signed for 350k, but undoubtably was probably put on high wage package , something the club could afford to do at the time, given the small transfer fee.

Maybe its that factor alone. Maybe Commons is on 23k per week or there-abouts, and wants something similar again. And Celtic are maybe saying : “Naw, ur 31… take 15k or nothing”.

LiviBoy. The problem is finding a 30 goal a season striker who off the park behaves like an angel they are few and far between and cost big money.I think it is up to the manager and the club to try to improve the discipline of the wayward player not take the easy option to punt them every time.H.H.

Sadly commons and Celtic both have a tricky situation here. He can get a contract in EPL for 3 years on 3 times the salary or Celtic can afford to slightly increase his current wage but realistically probably not offer him 3 years as this would take him to beyond his sell by date and lock us into a final year of paying a lot of cash for a player unlikely to contribute much.

Should be a busy day for transfers in, if as I am led to believe the window for registration for the Maribor game closes tonight at midnight.

Oh and maybe a few out the way the rumours are going, Ronny big on discipline and we have many short on this quality.

  11. I think LB Jr is ready for his first trip to Paradise.

He is just 2 years old and I am looking for some advice.

Where can you park these days with the motor? I haven’t drove to a game in years.

He has a season ticket which my dad bought him and I don;t. I have been offered a ticket for the upper North Stand a mate can’t use due to holiday and I was going to take him in to his seat in the North stand lower beside my family but not sure if that ticket will work at the lower turnstiles. Don’t want to get knocked back at the gates. He will sit on my knee anyway and don;t fancy all those stairs up to the upper carrying LB Jr.

Lastly will the gazebo be in position on Saturday so we can shelter from the rain before the match?

I tend to agree but we don’t get to see what they do on the training pitch.

Hopefully he plays on Wednesday and rattles a goal or two in.

I think it is harsh if he is moved on without having a chance in his preferred position to show what he can do.

  16. LiviBhoy –

I can only respond to your final point.

I understand that attempts are underway to link the long established Gazebo to the much newer CQN Corner. The latter seems to be easier to find although the former clearly would keep its history. No firm detail yet on the new name either so open to ideas.

I expect more developments on this as the week goes on.

  17. Jobo Baldie

    Thanks Jobo.

Hopefully there will be a big attendance from CQN punters.

I am looking forward to taking the wee Bhoy to his first match.

  20. The new manager/ coach has to get us through the games against Maribor

We just do not have the players to play his preferred 4-3-3 -the disaster of the last round showed that only too graphically

Therefore he needs to come up with a formation that might work

Most games are won and lost in the middle of the park -we need to have three central midfielders for these games

I to have that feeling of dread, if we go into the Maribor game with the current squad I fear we will be humiliated, we need a few in to give us hope.

Even with that theres still a lot to be done, in getting them into the squad and getting them settled, playing Berget on his second day was a cry for help from Ronny in my opinion.

  30. Article from the Birmingham Mail, highlights that we were interested in Tonev last year, so not a Ronny decision, is this another one of Big Peters choices??

Misfiring winger set to swap Villa bench-warming for Champions League football

Aleksandar Tonev’s Aston Villa nightmare is almost over – for a year at least – with the winger set to join Celtic on a season-long loan.

According to reports in Scotland, Tonev flew into Glasgow yesterday for a medical ahead of a temporary switch to the Parkhead club.

Celtic were in for Tonev last summer, but the Bulgarian international midfielder opted to join Villa from Polish club Lech Poznan instead.

It was a decision that backfired as the 24-year-old failed to adjust to the demands of English football, despite 22 appearances in league and cup for the claret and blues.

He failed to contribute a goal or an assist and was best remembered for anxiously firing wild shots off target in his efforts to impress.

Tonev’s switch to the Scottish Premier League is set to include an option for the Glasgow club to buy him at the end of the season.

If his deal is completed before the latest Champions League signing deadline tonight, he could feature in the play-off against Maribor.

Kittoch. Playing Berget was a huge gamble which did not pay off the player wasnt fit and didnt know his team mates that meant we were effectively playing with ten men from the start.I will support Rony as he is the Celtic manager but I have not as yet seen him looking or acting like it but I live in hope. H.H.

  32. Interesting to hear Neil Lennons views on Fraser Forster and Ryan Gauld over the weekend, while I welcome Neils views on Celtic I hope he is not going to be too selective in what he says.I for one one would be very interested to hear his views on Celtics transfer policy over his time there especially the signing of guys like,Lassad,Miku,Pukki,Balde,Brozak and Boerrigter.Celtic dont need any more project signings we need guys ready to walk straight into the first team not guys that cant get a game in the lower reaches of the EPL.We seem to be ignoring the SPL,I thought Gordon Strachan did well there bringing in Hartley,Robson and MacDonald, maybe we should be looking more at this market instead of players who dont really have a great desire to play for Celtic.
