Lessons are needed from Barcelona and Paris performances

Salzburg are the real deal.  For years, backed by sponsor Red Bull, they have deployed one of the most expensive wage bills outside of Europe’s big five leagues.  They are in the Europa League due to an away goals defeat to Red Star Belgrade (who drew their opening Champions League tie with Napoli), but the Austrians have won their six games since, scoring 21 goals in the process.

That run included a 2-3 win at Leipzig, one of only two defeats the Germans have suffered in 17 competitive games stretching back to April.  They sit seven points clear at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga after a flawless nine wins from nine.

From a technical perspective, this will be a new challenge for Celtic this season.  Our biggest problem, both domestically and at home, has been breaking down packed defences, Salzburg will have no such inhibitions.  They attacked throughout in Leipzig, successfully chasing an 89th minute winner while most European teams on their travels would settle for a point.

I have been critical of how open Celtic were against Barcelona (7-0) and PSG (0-5, 7-1) in recent seasons.  Whatever it is that St Mirren could conjure against Celtic last month, we were unable to find the same fortitude when facing a similar disparity in resources.

Salzburg are not Barcelona or PSG, but they will comfortably despatch any team who are defensively soft.  We might not win, but we should aim to be competitive tomorrow night.

The Dons were unhappy with the timing of the game, with the first train from Aberdeen not arriving until 14 minutes after kick-off.

Hearts want their clash with Celtic to be hosted at Murrayfield, but the SRU have doubts over whether they can host such a big tie at short notice.

  2. Aberdeen are happy to travel to Glasgow and play Rangers at Hampden on October 28, providing the kick-off time is changed from the original 12pm slot.

Disciplinary Rule allegedly breached:Disciplinary Rule 200 – A1 Serious Foul Play

  5. mike in toronto on

I have never been sure about the red card rule, and particularly what happens if the ref misses a red.

In this case, a red card would have benefitted Cetic as they would have played the entire second half against 10 men.

Now, because the ref missed the call, he will miss two games… but not against Celtic, so Celtic doesn’t benefit .. other teams will.

Maybe the rule should be that if a player commits a foul against team A that is missed by the ref, but is subsequently penalised, the player should miss the next game and the next game against team A.

  6. How can mckenna’s tackle be deemed worthy of a 2 match ban?

The referee didn’t even think it was a foul.

Either the SFA Are wrong or the referee is wrong.

  7. As Celtic were the victims of McKenna`s alleged foul play, it would seem only fair that they should benefit from any action taken.

I haven`t got a clue how that could be implemented but there does seem to be something wrong when teams not involved in the incident benefit from playing a weakened Aberdeen side.

  8. JC2- I thought it was Collum, they have had a few reds against us recently, it was for any red card BTW….

  9. Good evening, friends. Embdy watching the football tonight, you know the games that are the warm up before tomorrow’a Europa League fixtures. AS they were very entertaining on Matchday 1 I think I’ll watch Liverpool away to Napoli. Hope Liverpool win although not really that bothered and instead just hoping to be entertained.

Will watch tomorrow’s two games between Scottish and Austrian teams with interest though. Lots of Rapid Vienna fans in Glasgow City Centre. Hope they have brought their stab proof vests with them.

The irony is we know by Wednesday like most Celtic fans did on Saturday, that it was a penalty.

The compliance officers decision is just another slap in the face for Celtic.

I’m confident Celtic were onto Hampden on Monday morning, who else would rattle the compliance officers cage?

  12. So, if Madden had brandished a red card McKenna would have missed half a game. Now he’ll miss two!

McInnes will probably be raging with Madden now!

    No offence intended.

I have no issue with any opinion being posted – and actually I don’t believe an opinion need pass any ‘informed’ threshold.

    Free speech and all that.

That said there is a trend on here (and FJ – this is NOT aimed at you) of posters purporting to know the thought processes of our CEO and largest shareholder.

If those doing so are on speaking terms with the pair of them I am both surprised and jealous in equal measure.

The club should refuse this. If not, all Celtic fans should boycott it. No problem playing there if it’s fair. This isn’t.

  16. Celtic should kick up a right royal feck over this semi final.

    We are being totaly shafted

  17. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

As long as people adopt an us and them attitude to the club, rather than a one club approach, we will always have a blame/ credit scenario.

It takes all departments functioning together to create a successful club.

At the moment, I believe we have one, even though there may, or may not, be tensions.

    These are usually resolved.

What we don’t need is stirring, based on hypothesis, conjecture and downright begrudgery, from customers who, by and large couldn’t run a ménage. Harrumph.

Bada Bing, if those kick offs are confirmed, by my calculations, Celtic fans attending the match will need to leave the house earlier than the fans of the other three?

    Over to you Celtic.

  19. CELTIC will take on Hearts at Murrayfield the SPFL has confirmed after ignoring Celtic’s call for a ballot draw to be held.

Up until yesterday afternoon the SPFL were still going along with the farcical decision that both games would be layer at Hampden on the same day.

However, after an astonishing u-turn they released a statement yesterday saying they were seeking to move one of the games to Murrayfield.

The Celtic vs Hearts game was pre-picked by the SPFL as the one to move to Edinburgh which irked the Celtic chief Peter Lawwell.

Celtic wrote to the SPFL about holding a fair draw to see who would be playing where. Instead, it looks like the SPFL have decided to pencil the game in without any ceremony.

here are the new fixture times and venues.

    Hearts v Celtic – 1:30pm – Murrayfield

    Aberdeen v Rangers – 4:30pm – Hampden

This is great news for Aberdeen fans who can now get early trains into a Glasgow to see their club in action.

The Rangers fans won’t be complaining and the Hearts fans have a short trip to make – the only fans out out by this are Celtic fans.

    ————————

    Celts are here

  20. So what time do our fans that live in Aberdeen and beyond, Ireland etc have to leave at??

I take it no one at Celtic or the SPFL give a feck.

I was never going no matter where or when it was played. Celtic being shafted from a great height. Sadly our PLC (Peter Lawwell’s Celtic) and the majority of our support will accept this shafting. Why do so many Tims enjoy being second class citizens in Scotland? Is it in their genes?

I was imagining the minister under his remit would be not just concerned with the monies ‘witheld’

but would be interested in the industrial scale cheating that went on in our national game.

If I had all the info to hand I would start bothering him right away, should it be a considered course of action.
