Lessons learned from Friday experiment

828

After every experimental line-up (such as Friday’s), it’s tempting to ask what the manager learned from the experience.

The partnerships on the left and right wings didn’t look right.  Emilio Izaguirre didn’t overlap as often as usual and Stuart Armstrong was less effective than normal.  A lack of space impacted the James Forrest-Adam Matthews partnership on the right.  Forrest was manhandled until he switched left or got inside the box, when he was able to play unhindered.

Ineffectiveness on the wings led to the same up front.  Anthony Stokes doesn’t get to play centre forward too often and didn’t really get much of a chance on Friday.  Stokes anonymity was the most glaring aspect of the game but I suspect the responsibility lies elsewhere.

I remember on the Friday Scottish news they interviewed a Hertz fan who’d bet them at start of season and asked what he was doing with his winnings etc.. Not even a box of Kleenex hahaha!

I was at every away game that season and it was a beautiful thing ✊KTF

Roy, the photos of anton heading on the ball to w@@ker to score at ibrox was repeated about ten days later when anton headed the ball to the same player to score our winner v the dons at pittodrie.

The picture of paul scoring at love street around march 1986 reminded me of how vital that goal was. It was the last minute , 1 1, and if paul hadn’t scored we wouldn’t have won the league on the last day. Choccy had won a tackle around half way and drove forward before setting paul up.

The umbro lime green strip is my favourite away strip. I can only remember losing once when we wore it.

Just to say thanks for all of your work. Do you have a clip of the Foggy Dew? I apologise if you put it up earlier. I am doing my best to keep up.

  4. Roy croppie, thanks so much for your photos they are brilliant! I’ve been on the pitch only once, at love street in 86, one of those moments that you just never forget. And we scored one of the best goals I’ve seen in the flesh, even if it was you know who that finished it!

J McCormick that’s a pisher about the ref taking you off cos Chernobyl fallout (there’s a joke there) but you’re right it was that week.

Great pictures and even better memories – thanks for posting them!

Some of my happiest times as a CFC have been spent in the bigotdome!

There was no better feeling than the comradeship and togetherness you experienced when the entire Celtic end was bouncing – often in victory but sometimes in defeat too!

Remember one New Year being there and being one down at HT and the whole Broomloan giving it the BOTOB for practically the whole of HT!

Team came out and shaw the way the support was buzzing and we won 2-1!

Love Street was something else as most who went that day went more in hope than expectation

Those days in the late 1980s were probably the last days of having so many local players playing who could relate more to the support

That meant the team could feed more off the support but that day the team in the first half really wound up the support with that brilliant display!

    Great times!

Croppybhoy, i think that was the 1985 new year’s day game, choccy and judas scored who also missed a penalty in the first half.

  15. Roy.

    Thank you.

Looking for a scrawny 15/16 year old in some of your pics.

Could be wrong but I think I remember the game you’re talking about.

    Cooper scored for them.

Mc gavervy turned McKinnon inside out and sent a cross for I think traitor to score. Then I think Mc Clair scored via a deflection.84?but as I said I could be wrong.

  18. Brian @ 20:14

Liked the picture of Harry Hood.

Brian, way back in the 70’s I taught in a school few hundred yards from Harry’s first bar/hotel venture, the Sherwood Manor. A group of the timmy guys had a wee end-of-session bevvy in the Sherwood and we were only about 15 minutes into it when Harry appeared and said “Lads, I think you’ll be more comfortable upstairs”. Upstairs was a function room and yer man obviously wanted a loud, soon-to-be drunk group out of his public lounge. An hour later a lassie appeared with a tray of rolls and sausage, on the house. Oor Harry sure knew how to run the place. We were there for hours. Great guy.

  19. roy croppie ( leftclicktic last night ),

Thanks again for the memories and your time.

    Absolutely riveting.

I’m also searching for myself in these crowd scenes , at the time I could pick myself out behind the goals etc but it was on Betamax so nobody else could really see you.

Although I am on WolfeTones 25th anniversary video at Barras, which we watched on Phil Coles bus to some Manchester testimonial , quite the video star :))

Henke, although the your day will come banner is a topper, my favourite banner of all time is simply the banner with the arrow pointing to the left that stated SCOTLANDS SHAME ->.

  22. !!bada bing!!

Jim Stewart was in goal on that day in 86.

One of the best days and nights I have ever following Celtic.

Thanks for the update on the actual date

I remember “Sqiggly” as we called Frank McGarvey skinning the Hun full back for the first goal up at our end but couldn’t tell you who he was – your memory is much better than mine!

Used to love the bigotdome before they filled in the corners!

If you were in the upper tier of the Broomloan you could see the bandits do walking away!

Long haired yins ma, i agree. The scotland’s shame banner was so simple but really effective. Really got the message across.
