Limiting the Lothians

194

We are two games away from the league split.  Celtic are due to face the three clubs immediately below them: Newco and Hearts and Aberdeen away from home. We will face fifth place St Mirren at home, but sixth place is still up for grabs.

Hibs have a single point advantage over Livingston, so it could go either way.  We have already played both twice at Celtic Park on league duty this season, whomever we meet, will have to travel to Celtic Park for a third time.  Livi and Hibs have both proven to be difficult venues for Celtic, so no hardship limiting our visits to the Lothians.

Today we hear from John Sweeney, who is part of the Road to Seville team that plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Seville next month, 20 years after he first visited the city on a Celtic pilgrimage.  John is a season ticket holder from Croydon, talks about his Celtic life and why the Foundation is an essential part of his Celtic life.

You can support the great work of your Foundation as well as encouraging John and the other cyclists here.  Thank you, it is enormously appreciated.

  1. Got a pathetic reply from SKY, so against my better judgement, I reacted and sent a response…not expecting anything back this time….

Again, apologies for the lengthy post, but including the whole exchange adds context….

    To SKY Complaints

I am complaining about the mis-leading editing of your SSN report

broadcast on Wednesday evening, 12th April.

Since the match on Saturday, Kevin Clancy, his wife and also his

children have been subjected to many threats and abusive messages from

Rangers supporters. Rangers fan-sites and blogs have been publishing and

sharing both his work and home address as well as his phone details.

All of this is indeed disgraceful and has to stop, as was stated by ex

Rangers player Kris Boyd in the same news segment.

However, for anyone watching this from outwith the west of Scotland,

your skewed video clips would suggest that Celtic and their supporters

were to blame. Your carefully edited footage shows Clancy being spoken

to by the Celtic captain, then standing in front of both McGregor and

Carter-Vickers as he shows the defender a yellow card. It then shows

soundless footage of both Celtic players challenging Clancy’s decision,

before he turns and walks away. All of this Celtic-focused video footage

is accompanied by the Rangers pundit defending the referee and bemoaning

the threats that have been aimed at Clancy after the game.

Anyone who did not already know that Rangers supporters are being

investigated by the police would be forgiven for thinking, as heavily

hinted at by your carefully crafted report, that Celtic fans were the

    guilty party in this.

To muddy the waters even further, your report makes no mention of the

fact that Rangers supporters are culpable, goaded on in part by Kris

Boyd, Andy Walker and other Sky employees suggesting that the referee

had made a huge error by awarding Celtic a free kick.

I find this level of misleading reporting sinister and highly biased. I

would ask that you address this misleading report as soon as possible

and clarify for all SSN viewers that it is the Rangers support to blame

    for this criminal activity,

I await your reply with interest

    Regards…

    Good afternoon,

Thanks for your email to Sky Sports News.

The voiceover for the piece read “The former Rangers striker Kris Boyd

believes Scottish referees are close to striking. That’s after Kevin

Clancy received death threats in the aftermath of Saturday’s Old Firm

game. Police Scotland are continuing to investigate the abusive messages

that were not only directed at Clancy, but also towards his wife and

    children.”

The report made no inference that the abuse came from Rangers or Celtic

fans. The interview with Kris contained footage featuring Rangers player

Nicolas Raskin, Kevin Clancy talking to Callum McGregor & Cameron

Carter-Vickers, and then Alfredo Morelos trying to talk to the referee –

therefore two Rangers players and two Celtic players – and the footage

was taken from the live match coverage, so was not altered or edited.

We hope the above clarifies our position that the report contained no

suggestion of guilt or wrongdoing toward a particular team.

    Kind regards

    Jan

    Viewer Relations

    Good afternoon Jan,

I find this to be an extremely disingenuous response and ignores the point i made in my complaint.

The footage shows the referee in conversation with two Celtic players and does not show any exchanges between Ciancy & the Rangers personnel. Throughout your footage of the referee in heated discussions with Celtic players, a Sky pundit who openly admits to a bias against Celtic is condemning the abuse directed at the Clancy family. To anyone unfamiliar with the story, the inference of the footage and voice over clearly suggests that Celtic personnel were the cause and subsequently their supporters are responsible.

There is no mention in your report, despite it being universally acknowledged, that the attacks are from Rangers supporters and the referees personal details were published on Rangers fan websites. Can you explain why not?

With these facts already established, can I ask why Sky Sports chose to include Celtic in their footage at all when they could and should have selected footage of the referee being surrounded and harangued by several Rangers players?

Can I also ask why SSN makes no reference to the fact that Sky staff, namely Kris Boyd and Andy Walker, repeatedly criticised Kevin Clancy and suggested that his poor decision-making may have altered the possible result, despite this later being proved to be incorrect following the SFA response to the letter of complaint?

I await your explanation for these omissions as well as an explanation of how Sky intend to address this clear case of suggested bias.

I will also be including your response in a complaint to Ofcom under the Broadcasting Codes Act 2003 (Due Impartiality and Due Accuracy Section 5)

    Regards

    HOT SMOKED

I wouldn’t say a 6 game ban is lenient. It could’ve been more, but it’s not a slap on the wrist as others have described it.

  3. Was not expecting anything much from the SFA re the headbutt hearing, but even by their standards, a 6 game ban is lenient. What is more embarrassing, but not surprising, is the lack of any apology, contrition or disciplinary action from the club. As someone else noted, if anything, it puts him in the running for the soon to be vacated DoF position…

  4. !!Bada Bing!! on

Bigger issue is McPherson hasn’t been disciplined by the huns,no great surprise by their zero standards, if that was a Celtic coach,he would have been suspended that night, before he had his Jammies on.Assaulting folk while at work, usually ends in dismissal.

That club is out of control at all levels and the authorities are terrified at correcting them.

At what point does all the other clubs say enough is enough 🙄

Liked this from a guy called TheDon1903 on Twitter ….

I’m sure Aberdeen FC will be writing to the SFA about how “astonished” we are that our manager got two more matches for calling someone a cheat. He should have just nutted Porteous and got two matches less.

    —–

    Funny, yet depressing.

  7. I am no longer really a football worrier anymore, it is unhealthy to be wound up so much about team, players, formations and performance.

but i do worry about the sub-culture of all things rangers that feels it is ok to assualt others because they are different.

    it is not the 1930s.

i really do fear a belfast celtic type incident at the Brox, they are dangerous , enboldend and never get punished in accordance with the rule breaking or the crime.

a responsible employer would have sacked him.

this was womans football not the battle of the boyne.

  13. The less of the Lothians is fine for me too Paul.

Thinking back to last year’ s scottish cup semi final at Hampden, there was a key moment that should be borne in mind. At 1-1 in the second half Carter Vickers found himself in the six yard box with the ball at his feet and a gaping goal. Earlier in April the same thing had happened at Ibrox when that time he scored a huge goal. “You don’t get that lucky against them twice in 2 weeks” he must have thought. I don’t think he believed it could happen again. He didn’t pounce on it, he hesitated a bit but did make good contact, only to see the ball strike the bar. A huge let off for them at a critical moment. It was an “Oh The Rangers they are Merd” moment really so we need to keep our composure and be ruthless in front of goal.

People expecting McPherson to get jail time for his assault on Alonso are being silly.

    ————-

    Totally agree.

Personally I think the punishment is correct.

I do not like to see the police involved in any football situation. Or poxy government summits.

Fran Alonso has accepted an unconditional apology.

Paradoxically the publicity may have boosted interest in the Ladies game.

I watched the Ladies game in question and posted about our great last minute recovery. We never stop.

How many on here watched the Ladies game ?

Many only became interested because of the headbutt.

Our Ladies deserve support and hopefully the furore will encourage more on here to watch and support the Ladies game.

That would be a fitting conclusion

  26. So to Rugby Park

A scene of the best of times and the worst of times for us Celtic fans.

The worst for me was going there post Seville and coming so close but with no cigar. Alan Thompsons missed penalty to make it 5-0 proved academic as the rangers franchise of the time won 6-1 v the pars. The realization that we would win nothing in that great season of 02/03 and that lot would incredibly win a treble.

There have been several great times there. We won 2 titles there in recent times of course. My personal favourite was when Di Canio inspired us to come from behind to victory on a miserable wet Saturday. He gave us hope that our Tommy Burns led team might actually deliver the holy grail. Having hope was like winning a trophy back then after those really bleak years.

A win on Sunday, if our rivals drop any points on Saturday, could lead to a title party a week later if that lot drop points up at Aberdeen……

Glasgow could be green and white and celebrating even before the cup semi final.

A win on Sunday at Rugby Parj , whatever happens elsewhere, will set us up to secure the league quickly and hopefully enjoy a full May of celebration.
