Limiting the Lothians

194

We are two games away from the league split.  Celtic are due to face the three clubs immediately below them: Newco and Hearts and Aberdeen away from home. We will face fifth place St Mirren at home, but sixth place is still up for grabs.

Hibs have a single point advantage over Livingston, so it could go either way.  We have already played both twice at Celtic Park on league duty this season, whomever we meet, will have to travel to Celtic Park for a third time.  Livi and Hibs have both proven to be difficult venues for Celtic, so no hardship limiting our visits to the Lothians.

Today we hear from John Sweeney, who is part of the Road to Seville team that plan to cycle from Celtic Park to Seville next month, 20 years after he first visited the city on a Celtic pilgrimage.  John is a season ticket holder from Croydon, talks about his Celtic life and why the Foundation is an essential part of his Celtic life.

You can support the great work of your Foundation as well as encouraging John and the other cyclists here.  Thank you, it is enormously appreciated.

A Northern Ireland football supporters’ group says it is not in favour of tournament matches being hosted at a rebuilt Casement Park stadium in west Belfast.

The proposed new stadium has been included in a bid by the UK and Ireland to stage the Euro 2028 tournament.

Northern Ireland currently play at the National Football Stadium at Windsor Park in south Belfast.

Its capacity is 18,500 which is well below the minimum 30,000 requirement.

The proposed stadium at Casement Park is set to replace the current Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) ground and is due to have a capacity of 34,500.

Casement Park is only two miles from Windsor Park but the Amalgamation of Official Northern Ireland Supporters’ Clubs (AONISC) does not believe a GAA ground is a suitable location for tournament matches.

A spokesperson said: “It is our view, and indeed our preference, that football tournaments should be hosted by football stadia.

“The Irish Football Association are aware of our position in relation to this matter.”

President Biden sat at the small desk designed for Britain’s late Queen Elizabeth when she did the honours during her historic visit in 2011. (Probably just as well nobody told Joe this.)

And then, after a suitable period of rest – the two presidents are both into double digits in dog years – they went outside so Joe could plant an oak tree in the grounds beside trees planted by Queen Elizabeth and Barack Obama, but not at the same time.

He is seeking compensation from the Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain KC because he believes the prosecution against him was malicious and has damaged his ability to make a living.

Mr Grier, who comes from Barrhead, Renfrewshire, said: “I’m unfortunately not surprised that the Inner House have refused to allow us to appeal to the Supreme Court.

READ MORE: Key Rangers figure fails in £14m fight against prosecutors over failed fraud case

“However, we do intend to take the matter directly to the Supreme Court.”

The Court of Session has previously heard how Mr Grier was taken into custody during an investigation into alleged criminal wrongdoing at the club.

Detectives and prosecutors believed that the law had been broken during the time the club was sold to businessman Craig Whyte.

Prosecutors claimed that Mr Grier participated in a fraud with Mr Whyte. They claimed that Mr Whyte broke the law by using cash from a firm called Ticketus to acquire the finance to buy Rangers.

Mr Grier was prosecuted alongside other men who were said to be involved in the alleged wrongdoing. However, everybody arrested during the probe was acquitted of any wrongdoing.

This prompted Mr Grier to launch a £7 million compensation action against the police and Crown Office, claiming his arrest had affected his ability to maintain his job in financial services.

Prosecutors previously admitted David Whitehouse and Paul Clark were wrongfully arrested and prosecuted – and the two men settled their action with both the Crown Office and Police Scotland with each of them receiving £10.3 million each – their legal bills, thought to be worth £3 million each, were also paid for.

Mr Grier’s lawyers told judge Lord Tyre at the Court of Session that both law enforcement agencies had acted maliciously against him, entitling him to compensation.

Lord Tyre also heard claims that the police officer leading the investigation – Detective Chief Inspector Jim Robertson – had acted inappropriately during the investigation.

Nevertheless, Lord Tyre ruled that Mr Grier’s lawyers hadn’t shown that the prosecution service had acted maliciously.

However, he said some of DCI Robertson’s evidence was “evasive” and “unreliable” and that some of his actions during the probe were “reprehensible”.

This prompted lawyers for Mr Grier to appeal to the Inner House of the Court of Session.

On Wednesday, Mr Grier’s lawyer Roddy Dunlop KC told civil appeal judges that the legal tests needed for the Court of Session to allow cases to go to the Supreme Court had been passed.

He told Lord Carloway Lord Pentland and Lord Woolman: “There is a genuine need for someone who has been caught up in such a scandal to have effective public remedy.

“There are good grounds available in this case to allow it to proceed.”

The Lord Advocate’s lawyer Gerry Moynihan KC said that he disagreed that the legal tests needed had been passed.

He added: “The question is whether there was an ulterior motive in prosecuting Mr Grier. The answer is that there is none. The prosecution was conducted in the reasonable belief that there was a reasonable belief that there was evidence available.

“Your lordships should not grant permission to proceed.”

Lord Carloway and his colleagues concluded that the tests needed for the case to proceed to the UK Supreme Court had not been passed

1900: Celtic defeat Queen’s Park 4-3 in the Scottish Cup final.

    14th April 1900 Scottish Cup Final Celtic 4 Queen’s Park 3

The last season of the decade of the 1890s – 1899/1900 – was a mixture of the disappointing and the successful.

The league campaign had gone badly, Celtic winning only 9 of 18 matches to finish second. By contrast, the winners, Rangers, won 15 of theirs. Celtic also lost out to the Light Blues in the final of both the Glasgow Cup (0-1 at Cathkin) and the Charity Cup (1-5 at Hampden). However, in the Scottish Cup, the side showed how well it could play, powering its way in goal-scoring form through the early rounds;-

In the final, played on this day in 1900, a disappointing crowd of 15,000 turned up at Ibrox, when the Spiders of Queen’s Park were the opponents. Celtic won the toss and chose to play with the wind at their backs in the first half but it was Queen’s Park who took the lead early in the match. That merely pushed Celtic to raise their game and they did so, getting three goals from inside-left Sandy MacMahon, centre-forward John Divers and outside-left John Bell just before half-time.

Early in the second half, Divers scored again to make it 4-1 and although Queen’s Park pulled two goals back, the final score of 4-3 gave Celtic their 3rd Scottish Cup success.

    Trivia:

Game marked the successful transition from the old amateur (shamateur?) days to the professional game

Key to highlight Celtic’s successful progression whilst others floundered.

Queen’s Park last Scottish Cup final

    Match played at Ibrox Park.

The end of the original Glasgow derby; in the early days it was Queen’s Park and not Rangers who were the establishment club, although Celtic & Rangers had by this point long surpassed Queen’s Park.

    My friends in Celtic,

So the EPL is to begin banning gambling shirt sponsors on the front of their shirts..

Absolute woke nonsense and further evidence of the current cancel culture.

Perfect timing as the nation will be tuned into the Grand National.

That institution will also be under threat from the woke , cancel culture fascists.

With all due respect, you don’t know what you are talking about.

Nobody is suggesting that gambling should be banned. It’s the marketing of gambling companies that is the target. Celtic and other clubs will have no problem attracting shirt sponsorship from products outwith the betting sector.

Gambling is a serious problem for many people and by definition families, including children.

Growing up, I and my brothers suffered through the gambling of my late father. He often came home at the end of the week with no wages after spending the afternoon in the betting shop. When he was late home on payday, I saw my mother kneeling on the floor with her rosary beads, praying that he would not gamble his wages. A sorry sight that is embedded in my memory.

Often my mother had to go to family and borrow money and it is to her eternal credit that I and my brothers never went hungry, although I know she certainly did.

I also had a close friend who committed suicide because of his gambling addiction. He had twin daughters aged 3.

I do enjoy a bet on the football and to me it’s part of the fun of going to the game or watching on TV. I never bet on horses because I don’t follow them and have no idea what to bet. Yesterday I placedca £10 bet on a player to win the World Snooker which starts tomorrow. As I say, it’s just a bit of fun as I will follow the tournament on TV. If I can’t afford a bet, I leave it alone, but there are thousands of problem gamblers out there who can’t leave it alone. They are addicted. It is an illness.

It really annoys me when I see gambling companies advertising on TV, especially during live TV games, and on football shirts. It’s not necessary.

You can shout all you like about WOKE –whatever that means — and CANCEL CULTURE. Gambling companies make billions each year out of people’s misery. Do they really need to advertise for more billions, especially on the Celtic shirt?

    I think not.

  14. GP- agree, though the new rules will mean you can still have gambling sponsors on the sleeves……

My wife suffered similar to you through my late father n law. Her vivid memory of this still haunts her.

I think you are correct that it is the messaging they are focused on and that does make sense. Likewise for my own industry alcohol. It should about responsible messaging. It isn’t woke but the industries fear it it the thin end of a wedge and cite tobacco as their evidence.

I am not so sure attracting sponsors to replace the value is as easy as you suggest at Scottish clubs. We know even in a season of peak interest in our game 2002/3 it went to the wire and a December 2002 deadline when Carling agreed for 2003/6 initially. Maybe more innovative and creative thought might solve the problem, or create and opportunity from it though.

If Celtic cannot find a shirt sponsor outside the drink or gambling sector, then I’d prefer they go without a shirt sponsor.

  18. Re advertising,I think that the SPFL said they wouldn’t do what the EPL have signed up to…..

  19. Personally, I think there’s an air of snobbery about how gambling and drink sponsorship is viewed.

There’s nothing wrong with having a few pints and betting on your team.

Like most things, moderation is key.

Where we sponsored by a financial institution for example, would that be fine ? Despite the huge damage to millions of people these organisations have inflicted with their vast levels of greed and risk taking?

What about being sponsored by the fossil fuel sector, would that be OK?
