Livi will arrive at Celtic Park confident

386

After a home defeat to St Mirren in November precipitated Gary Holt’s resignation as Livingston manager, the West Lothian club have won all eight games played, by any measure, they are the form team in Scotland right now.  They were 13 points behind fourth placed Hibernian after that St Mirren defeat.  Hibs have played three games more than Livingston since then but the gap has shrunk to 7 points.

That should illustrate how Livi will be a more difficult opponent than Hibs were this week.  New manager, David Martindale, will fancy his chances of making a name for himself at Celtic Park tomorrow.

Celtic are still without their 13 isolating players, as well as the long-term injured, although Nir Bitton returns from suspension and will likely replace Stephen Welsh.  I expect David Turnbull to move into the middle at the expense of Tom Rogic, with Ewan Henderson starting on the right as he finished against Hibs.

Neil Lennon might be thinking long and hard about Diego Laxalt, who conceded the late foul Hibs equalised from on Monday, and did the same at Ibrox, preceding the corner kick Newco scored from.  It is not totally Diego’s fault that we cannot defend set-pieces satisfactorily, but we need to find a way to stop him conceding them.  Replacement by Greg Taylor is an option.

I have no suggestions as to what we do up front but would not be surprised if Mikey Johnston moved inside.  On the positive side, Livingston will not know what to expect from us.

  5. On a match day, I am less inclined to talk about the Covid19 virus and more inclined to look at the Failing 10 virus.

We are in the 2nd match of our reduced squad period. We all saw the great effort of our patched up team to very nearly take 3 points off a Hibs team who were in a bad patch and minus Boyle.

Today we are facing a Livi team on a great run of form. You used to be able to rely on them being difficult on plastic but poor away from home. That is no longer the case. Their away record is 5 wins and 2 draws from 11 games- they have scored 17 and concedded 14.

They are a team based on hard work and constant running. Big boys at the back and wee buzz bombs in midfield and up front (since Dykes left). Since they are scoring at a rate of over 1.5 per game away from home, we should have to score, at least 2, to win today, but it is clear that up front is our weakness and we have no clear fit and available forward , aprt from Afolabi on loan, No matter who occupies the space- we will be playing without a striker or target man today.

We will be forced to play a patient possession game , hoping to move them around and create space. A game plan, we are pretty tired of watching. The only spice we can add to it is to test their goalie (Stryjek or McCrorie) as we have midfielder like Turnbull, McGregor and Rogic who can shoot effectively from distance. We can also use Shane at set pieces, now that refs are allowing you to drape over and “outmuscle” defenders at set plays.

But our defence needs to ba as good as last week, and keep it going into injury time. I would be happy to see young Robertson in alongside Soro as he has kept the ball and shown confidence in resisting a tackle in his previous apearances, and his short spell with Gillingham has given him game time that the likes of Ewan Henderson have not had.

It looksl likely that Mikey will be the guy asked to be the scapegoat kid-on number 9 today, rather than Dembele or Harper, if he is , unfortunately, leaving. Mikey has tricky feat and can do damage when facing up attackers but with his back to goal against bruising defenders I fear for him.

We will pretend we have a 4:2:3:1 line up today but it will be an equivalent to a Craihg Levein 4:6:0 line up , albeit with more attacking intent.

I’ll be happy with 2:0 today (Duffy and McGregor) but we annot afford to use Mikey at no.9 in the Wednesday fixture at the plastic Macaroni stadium. Thankfully, we will have Ajeti , Eddy and Griff back by then

    Brilliant!!

  10. Piers Corbyn has a physics degree and an Astrophysics masters. He has spent most of his life in the field of weather forecasting (where he has a very iffy record and poor peer reviews) and minor politics. He has had only one paper in which his scientific work has been peer reviewed and found wanting.

He is undoubtedly of high intelligence but, unfortunately, limited background in this debate, as I have too.

In any scientific discipline, you will have people who kick against the prevailing viewpoints of the time. They serve a valuable purpose. 99% of them turn out to be dead wrong but, occasionally, there is a maverick who moves the science on, who persuades other scientists of their viewpoint and research efficacy, and who, crucially, have the scientific evidence to back up their alternative biews. They then become the new orthodoxy until new mavericks take them on. It is rarely ever a case of what went before was completely wrong and what replaced it is completely right. Science moves on in fractions. You are yesterday’s news if your propositions fits with 75% ogf the known evidence and someone comes up with a competing proposal that accounts for 75.1% of it. And the judgement on what score you get is provided by each of your rivals in that field,

It’s a pretty fair system- not easily influenced by cronyism or financial patronage. Let’s keep it thta way.

The diversion away from boardgate and on to Covid conspiracy theories proves once and for all that Peter Lawwell DOES post on here.

  12. Piers Corbyn- can tell you how many pickles are in the jar……but canny get the lid off it….best ignored.

  13. With only 2 hours to kick off and despite the many worrying issues that affect both our club and society in general, I am as excited as I usually am in anticipation of watching The Champions play. I know it’s just 2 hours of escapism but, bhoy, do we need that as regularly as possible. Can’t wait.

    Profiteering through Covid?

It’s not the jags we should look to for the conspiracy. Like the devil, profiteering Tory capitalists hide in plain site. Hence the £billions of our taxes already stolen to ‘buy’ PPE that either doesn’t exist or has the protective properties of papier-mâché.

Lockdown and furlough are the antithesis of what a Tory Govt and chancellor wants. They want minimal benefits and low paid workers back to work. ASAP.

GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL that rang distant, distant memory bells so I just HAD to find out, didn’t I? Here it is.

Stephane Bonnes is a former footballer who played for Mulhouse F.C, Celtic, Partick Thistle and Saint-Louis-Neuweg. Bonnes was signed for Celtic by John Barnes on 29 July 1999 but despite scoring in a pre-season game against HamKam, he never played a single first team game.

    Some things never change, then?

  21. BGFC here (highjacking the Bhoy’s account)

Just had a read at the eTims diary.

    Can’t agree with Ralph’s view:

“…I’d propose that if the season could be struck from the record books, Celtic would be prepared to back a plan which meant that visiting teams could get a percentage of gate receipts from the hosts….on two conditions.

Firstly, that clubs make more tickets available for Celtic when they visit them, and secondly, they back null and void…”

I think that would be distasteful – and corrupt – proposal for Celtic to pursue – coercing other clubs that are in fiancial peril to avoid us reaping what we have sowed. Really poor.

There is an argument for Null and Void.

There is also an argument for sharing gate receipts in some way, and a quid-pro-quo of more tickets for away fans is soething that could benefit everyone.

Might be realpolitik, but making one conditional on the other is not a road I’d like to see us going down.

  23. One thing about CoViD19 is that it has provided a hanger for everyone to hang their own issues / questions / uncertainties / disapointments / challenges / nightmares / suspicions.

All it shows is how troubled we are as a society — unsure of the future and disappointed by the past.

If CoViD19 was a political entity it would probably get elected to too many parts of Trump America / Brexit England / Nat Scotland.

No surprise that there are so many conspiracy theories on the go about it.

For many — if you don’t understand it or you don’t like the answers it generates then gossip / innuendo / scare stories are all you have left.

    Not a pretty sight.
