Longmuir objections defeated. Then he asks for the top job

725

So after 15 years and 121 years respectively, the Scottish Premier League and Scottish Football League will be wound-up due to the creation of the Scottish Professional Football League.  Small objection, I know, but I don’t like the name.  It’s cumbersome and, in the case of one member club (Queens) downright inaccurate.  They stuck a word in to differentiate the new entity from the historical one, but why ‘Professional’?

I assume the last champions of the Scottish Premier League will retain the trophy, just as Northern Ireland did with the Home International Championship trophy?  Or will the brown brogue brigade insist that doesn’t happen?  I’m sure St Mirren will be making plans for the now-defunct Scottish Football League, League Cup, or at least they will when someone realises the awarding body is about to cease.

The new financial compensation structure will make a significant difference to half a dozen or so clubs in the second tier of the game but that’s about it.  There is no magic wand for Scottish football short of federation with a neighbouring association.

The biggest laugh of the day came from the news that outgoing SFL chief exec, David Longmuir, the man who did more than anyone to prevent the new SPFL getting to this stage, has put himself forward for the new chief executive position.

The word ‘shameless’ seems somewhat inadequate.  Make sure the brogues are clean for interview next week, David.

How will that one go?  ‘I know, I got it completely wrong.  I did my best to stop all of this from coming to fruition, what a laugh.  Best thing I can say is, I’m not Neil Doncaster, so how’s about it?’

Better get that CV types, David.  Or is my prediction that you were working your way to a position with a lower league club coming to fruition?

Having had an endoscopy last year and having to have one again next year or in 2 years time, I had it with a local anesthetic. Still found it hard to swallow the camera. Mind you, after a very uncomfortable few minutes (can’t remember exactly how long), you can go off straight away. Mind you, I’m not looking forward to the next one one little bit. (The ole colonoscopy is a cake walk in comparision!!!)

  3. Well we now have our own pub in Celtic Park which can accomodate up to 800 people. Brilliant news, also pre and aftermatch entertainment, I can’t wait to hear a good session of hardcore Rebel music next time I’m over. On a serious note,I think its a great move and will be fantastic facility for overseas supporters in particular.

RANGERS’ brand new team bus has been described as the best in Scotland after it arrived in the country from Holland.

Suppliers Bruce Coaches have invested a significant sum in what they call a ‘Premiership-level’ vehicle to transport Ally McCoist and his players around the country in.

Specially-built for use by the club by Vanhool, the 41-seat bus carries all sorts of equipment which will make journeys as comfortable as possible for the Third Division champions.

It was inspired by a trip to look at the coach Liverpool use last season and was ordered last September.

As well as luxury leather seating with extended legroom, the bus has satellite television, wifi, power sockets, a top-of-the-range sound system and a computer game console.

There are also extensive cooking facilities including an oven, hotplates and fridges for first-team chef Paul Lafferty to prepare meals for the squad after matches.

One of the tables is hydraulic and can be lowered to the same level as the chairs around it to create an area for injured players to lie down on and receive treatment.

Manager McCoist, his assistant Kenny McDowall and coach Ian Durrant all have seats with personalised headrests on them as well.

Complete with carpets in Rangers’ own tartan, the bus even has a separate bed compartment which allows members of the group to rest in privacy if required.

The Light Blues will use the bus for first time when they travel north for their opening pre-season fixture at Highland League outfit Brora a week on Sunday.

You can get a sneak preview of what the players can expect by watching our video of the vehicle on RangersTV now. Click HERE to sign up to the official club channel.

Fans are also able to hire the coach for corporate use including for weddings and funerals and can call the hotline on 0871 702 1972 for further information.

Driver Greg Docherty said: “It’s a 14.2-metre bus which was delivered to us on Tuesday morning after coming into the country two weeks ago and going through safety checks first.

“It’s a Premiership-level coach which is fully equipped with multimedia systems including Sky television, smart TVs and a PS3.

“The kitchen facilities include a commercial-level oven, there’s a coffee-making machine and so much more.

“It really is a top-range vehicle and there’s nothing else like it in Scotland. There never has been before and it’s superb.

“Mr Bruce is a Rangers supporter and he wants the team to have the best so he has endeavoured to make it as good as he possibly could.

“Anything that we could do to make the players as comfortable as possible for their journeys to away grounds we have done as well as we could.

“The seats are bigger than they were in last season’s vehicle and there is more room for each person so they should all be very relaxed and comfortable.”

Its a pity that some feel that their longstanding support of Celtic is somehow conditional on the clubs stance against Rangers and the SFA.

The corruption and bias and all that goes with it in this country to support Rangers has always been there in my lifetime. SFA, referees”

If that was in response to my earlier post, it is certainly not what I meant. As far as I recall, I didn`t mention the Club`s stance against anyone.

The clearest I can make it is to say that I fear I would no longer enjoy watching Celtic in a country where the last semblance of fairness had been blatantly removed.

Of course The Establishment always favoured the Ibrox Club but there was always room for just a little doubt.. For me, removal of that last grain of hope would, perhaps, remove the joy I experience in watching Celtic.

    I make no conditions.

  13. Re the supporters bar. A few seasons back for 100 squid per season you could get into the champions lounge all domestic games, unfortunately not European games, it was always packed and was obviously a money spinner for CFC. 100 pounds on top of the SB and all the profit on booze and food went to Celtic. I was a member for a couple of seasons – good idea. Probable that the new bar will also have a membership fee. As far as I can recall your membership only meant you got in – no guests allowed.

without the sedative, if you can stay as relaxed as possible

{not easy in the circumstances } it helps a lot also the person

carrying it out has a big role to play, the first time I had a really

    Re the bar at CP

I think it is the way forward although I may have started out with a ST members scheme as I anticipate a lot of MSM/LL will be sniffing about trying to scupper the idea

I drink in one of the bars close to the ground on match days but will be looking to try the new setup out

IMO if it’s a sing song you’re after the local bars are the place to go but if it’s a drink and a discussion you’re after then the ground bar will be ideal .

I think the walk in idea maybe become problematic as i’m sure it may attract more than 800 bhoys n ghirls

  24. Broony’s back

Celtic midfielder Scott Brown says he is determined not to play catch-up with his team-mates after checking in to pre-season training at Lennoxtown a week late.

The club captain was forced to pull out of the Scotland squad for the 1-0 World Cup qualifier victory in Croatia at the start of June through injury.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon gave the former Hibernian player extra time off to recover but Brown says he is now back and raring to go.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m only back one day and I’ve not trained with the squad, I’m doing my own running.

“I feel not too bad. I’ve not really done twisting and turning and passing the ball yet so I’m a bit behind everyone else, but I’ll catch up soon.

“My pre-season won’t be much different from everyone else’s. I’m just playing catch-up because they were in a week earlier than me. I’ll hopefully join in with a few games here and there.

“I’d love to play in pretty much most of the games but we’ll have to see how I go in training and how far behind my touch is from everyone else. My body feels fine, I feel good from the four weeks of recovery and it’s been good to just rest.”

Celtic face a crucial Champions League second qualifying round double header with Northern Irish champions Cliftonville next month and Brown is under no illusions about the importance of the tie to the club’s aspirations for the new season.

“It’s been short and sweet but it’s been good to get back in and see the lads,” he continued. “We’ve not had the longest break ever but for me, I enjoy coming back and seeing the lads.

“I enjoy training and playing football, it’s more a hobby than a job for us. We’re all feeling quite refreshed and pre-season won’t be as tough as it would be if we had seven or eight weeks off. We’ve got a lot of games as well so we’ll get our match sharpness back quickly.

“The Cliftonville tie is going to be huge. It will be two good games and we have to try and get everyone fit and ready. It will be hard with some players still away on international duty.

“It’s hard to get everyone back into the squad on time but I’m sure the gaffer will do that. It will help us for the start of the season as well but it will be hard and we just have to get through it.”

Brown’s return to Celtic’s Lennoxtown training base saw him meet the club’s two summer signings Virgil van Dijk and Amido Balde for the first time and the skipper is looking forward to getting to know them on the pitch.

“The new lads seem friendly and it’s good to have them in,” he said. “Look at the size of them. It’s good to have some height in the team, we’ve maybe missed that.

“They seem lively around the training ground and that’s the main thing. There are a lot of games before the qualifiers so that will help us get used to how they play.”
