Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

Am gutted just realised tonight that Frank Gallagher was a bampot in Patriot Games….

Livibhoy enjoyed your words about the quality time with the wee mhan, I can assure you my wee 6yr old is both my daughter, best pal & also speaks to me as if she was my own mother, lucky for me I have took her to nursery and P1 & P2 every single day being a modern dad is magic, by the way I am not daft her mum is still the most important person in her life, like all our mums, as fathers we are just the support act

  4. Jim McGuinness came across very well on RTÉ. No new info really for Celtic supporters but excellent from a PR point of view.

16 Roads: Were you watching that? Jim reckons the Dubs have improved on last year and that they will be unbeatable for the next ten years. My interpretation of what he said

    anyway:-)

    HT: You are too modest.

  5. 16 roads…Lets Leave it…My Guess is that Way Over 70% of Muslins are Disgusted by Isis and Their Actions..You wanna think Isis gonna come get you, and that 7 outa ten muslims support Isis’s actions( not Ideals)….Then thats ok by me, i Speak with muslims Everyday in life and i dont get that from them..Just Saying..

The barbarism of ISIS is nothing new on this planet of ours, what is,is the technology we’ve invented to make barbarism easier, wouldn’t life here on earth be much better if the only barbarism we could muster up was of that which ISIS employs given that the planet with man’s presence has always had a continual state of war somewhere?

Personally I think we should all take responsibility and revert back to Islam and try to lead simpler, more fulfilling and loving lives whilst regaining the spirit of community that’s been eroded by our western aspirations that’s so prevalent in Islamic communities.

Then mibbe if we don’t like it we can bomb ourselves and gee the planet peace!

Ha! People such as WITS were saying the very same, on CQN this time last year. Then it all went horribly wrong when Donegal put yous to sleep.

Almore, Dublin are a very good side,no question – it’s the mentality of the players that is always of concern, and rightly so imho.

  14. Leftclicktic glad to see a fellow John Prine fan and that duet with Iris DeMent is pretty good. Never thought I would love a love song with this lyric in it: “I caught him once and he was sniffin’ my undies”!

eddieinkirkmichael, I never got religion despite being brought up in it and surrounded by good people who did get it. My uncle, and foster father was a good man, a clever man, who told me when he was dying that he got a great comfort from his RC faith.

He asked me if I would do him a favour and keep an open mind on returning to my baptised religion and I promised him I would though I think it highly unlikely.

I respect and envy those who do get comfort and have known many like you. It is a personal thing

To finish on a melacholy note (nothing like John Prine’s) this song names two of the towns where my paternal grandmother’s parents came from, Ballyhaunis and Claremorris. I must visit them some day.

It’s called perspective, I think, every time I walk out of mass I feel the better for it, by the way I know I am far from the best person, anyway we have had a great time up in your homestead, cracking grub and the Mrs & daughter loved the swimming baths the day, wasn’t a drinking break but has a wee strongbow in the Commodore watching the tennis, never thought I would ever admit that, enjoy the time with the grandweans

    Hail Hail

  20. 16 Roads: I was at last week’s match and will go again next Sunday. Kildare were poor and I don’t think Westmeath will offer much next week. I won’t predict an all-Ireland for the boys in blue as I don’t follow the GAA as much as I used to. I was at the Dublin v Donegal match last year, expected Dublin to win and gutted at the result. Fair play to Tír Chonaill. Can’t see beyond Dublin, Kerry and Donegal this year.

HT: I’m well aware others do tremendous work but on this blog you keep us informed and motivated. That’s really important and much appreciated by this Tim. YNWA.

I here you mate. Kids need their mother. Always their first port of call. We are important. We play a role a huge role but I don’t grudge the closeness my boy has with his mum. It makes my wife’s day when he tells her that he loves her which is daily. Never told me that yet but I don’t need to hear it. Single parents deserve a medal. How they manage is beyond me!

Fantastic levels of fitness being shown in the Chile-Argentina Final. Sanchez has some motor on him.

  23. IniquitousIV on

Looks like Chile, in players like Sanchez, Vidal, Medel, have 11 Johansen’s, but with a ton of skill. Unfortunately, the game is now going to penalties.

  24. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

Didn’t see today’s game and have only skimmed the post match posts.

Usual disparate comments, but the best post that I read, was SFTB’s repost of Bankibhoys1’s toast to CQN.

If there is any justice in this world, then that peon to the minestrone that is CQN should be recited at every CQN gathering, whether the golf do or at Hootenannys

Exactly, my daughter revels in not liking football just to annoy me, her mum watches Epl, CL and even games on Alba (Sevconian) but wee yin is adamant she is a girl and football is a boys game, as soon as she changes her mind we will be on the train to Carntyne with our parent/child ST’s

Take care &I Hail Hail and just think how good the wee man will feel bringing him up winning stuff never mind the 80s & 90s what we went through, although I think it made me love Celtic even more

    Before I go.

If there is anyone at CP who can focus the minds of players as to their professional responsibilities, then it is Jim Mc.Guinness.

Everyone in Ireland, especially Donegal, knows the heights to which the can inspire his men.

    Don’t anyone underestimate him.

Dreadful decision by the Argentina manager to send Higuain out to take their second penalty kick. This guy could have won them the World Cup, and the Copa America before extra time. What was he thinking?

  29. EddieinKirkmichael

Probably my greatest disappointment with CQN is the number of posts which I perceive to be anti Catholic. Our Church has many failings but despite that has an incredible ability to make many of us have a deep desire to be bettet people. That can’t be wrong in my eyes.
