Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

  1. Well, was a wee bit annoyed by the result today, didn’t see the game, but we were pretty much taken apart by the kind of teams that we would be hoping to dominate in the up coming UCL qualifiers.

That said, I can live with it, nuclear bombing the cradle of civilization only fleeting entered my mind when we were cheated by the honest mistakes.

That said, a word for the Mandaeans, haven’t they been punished enuff – without been vapourized out of exsistence by the wee-mad-mentals.

Is it the case that the St Mirren Park deal includes Celtic lending Saints two players for the new season? Paul McMullen and one other, to be decided.

I hadn’t noticed that anywhere in recent times but it came up in a conversation earlier.

Maybe young O’Connell could hold down a first eleven spot with them

  16. Very interesting decision by Celtic to play these pre-season friendlies at St Mirren Park in Paisley.

The reason given for this was that there is maintenance work at Celtic Park, which of course is the case and indeed I have seen this with my own eyes.

However there are perhaps some other factors at play.

    1. Had Celtic played these matches at Celtic Park the small crowd would have meant a poor empty stadium atmosphere. By playing at a much smaller stadium Celtic were able to endure a decent atmosphere.

    2. Improvements to Celtic TV and a growing confidence that Celtic TV can deliver games in a high quality fashion without the need of a third party media partner – who pay small English clubs hundreds of times the value of the worth they place on the global brand that is Celtic FC. I refer you to Paul’s recent blogs on watching matches on TV.

    3. Do you remember the Ronny Deila lecture video which had English subtitles added? Ronny wants to develop first team players and increase the importance of this team and indeed the U17s and so on. Where do these young Celts play?

    4. Celtic realise that the women’s side needs investment and with the World Cup in Canada coming to a conclusion there may be a growing market for the women’s game. The Celtic Women team need a home.

    5. Should an opportunity arise for Celtic to exit the Scottish league at some time in the future an established Development side could remain and compete well to say the least.

Could Celtic be looking at purchasing a small stadium or even building one?

Such a move could offer supporters the chance to watch more home friendlies such as today’s, allow the Development Squad, under 17s and women’s sides to have a home stadium with a regular support and give Celtic TV a huge increase in content.

    Content = audience = revenue.

Whether we develop Barrowfields or the land to the West of Celtic Park or buy a wee stadium ( and take tenants) there is a great deal to be said for such a plan.

Not that that’s what Celtic are thinking….

  17. bgx

Very true, and boy did we do well. However, that only highlights the decline here and the improvement elsewhere. I fear we are beyond repair for the foreseeable future,

Sometimes getting a few mins to yourself can be hard going. Today Isobel asked if I’d take the grankids out for an hr or so while she got a quick nap.

We went to the park and on the way out we were passing St Joseph’s. I noticed the side door was open so went over and popped my head in.

No one appeared to be about so I took the kids in, explaining that this was where they were all baptised. The kids loved the fact that they had this hugh building all to themselves, running around playing hide and seek. I just sat there, thinking, after a while I prayed. Not for anything inparticular, just prayed that life continues the way it’s going.

Over the last year or so I have made changes to my life, nothing dramatic, just small things like trying not to judge people and trying to help others if I can. I’ve also started to pray on a regular basis. I don’t always go to Mass but to be honest when I do go I really do feel something, I can’t explaine this but all I can say is since I started going back and commiting myself to prayer my life has changed for the better.

I know I’m not the greatest person in the world, far from it. I know there are those out there that probably hate me for some of the things I’ve done in my life. I can’t change the past but I can make sure that in my life going forward I will never hurt those that are closest to me or those that cross my path.

It’s satureday night and I’m writing this sober, I’ve just put the kids to bed and promissed them that we’ll go up the woods tomorrow for a walk.

While I’m watching over my grankids tomorrow I honestly believe that someone is now watching over me and it feels wonderful.
