Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

Enjoy Saturday night, lads. That has been a difficult wee conversation as far as I’m concerned.

Various people have made their thoughts clear, for me to continue the discussion ruins a Saturday.

Still think Scott Allan would be a fine addition to our squad. Plays a lovely defence splitting pass and with McGeouch as part of any deal it would probably cost us £500k plus Dylan. Hard to always slate the strikers if the ball is not on a plate for them. Didn’t see the game today went to visit my wee gran who will be 91 in 3 weeks. She is Italian and hails from Naples. Brilliant woman.

Ronny’s comments post match were encouraging. Losing is a learning curve and he learned a lot today. Transfer movement in and out next week I reckon.

BOBBYMURDOCH.Throughout previous generations we being the UK we have tried to wipe out those who have opposed us and it has not been a great success and certainly has not stopped us from having enemies. What muslims tell us that the Koran does not support ISIS so the majority of good non violent muslims need to address those who are corrupting Islam. We in the west must support the non violent muslims threatening to nuek them makes no sense at all.H.H.

Come on with all your solutions to the Isis crisis. Not one has given a better solution than total wipe out of them and the population they have invaded. One thing is for sure, Isis will wipe out the population they have invaded. Then move on to the next po……

Assad has butchered many many thousands in Syria. It’s one of the reasons why I.S. has gained support in Syria. The same Assad that the west supported. I can’t agree with the killing of innoncents. The question I would like people to think about is why are I.S. attractive to some. Once we start bombing innocents we are carrying out sub human acts and just to clarify I have zero sympathy was ISIS.

No, you’re right about that there is no easy answer to terrorism.

But human beings from any background calling for ‘nuking other people’ is a new low

RWE at 18.59, thank you for posting that film about Eibar. They look like a real community football club and the sense of belonging their fans have , was good to see.

Speaking of which, a post a few weeks back said one of the Celtic Submari leaders was not in good health. I hope he has recovered from his illness.

Stop looking at the world through the prism of 2003.

The issue with IS / ISIL is much bigger than the invasion you hark back to.

Think 1912 / 1922 and you might be on to something.

The one to worry about is the upcoming semi finals of the ME Military Might Armageddon Cup.

In no particular order — Iran / Israel / Saudi Arabia / Turkey.

The one to watch is the Gulf Derby — 1440 years of hurt in that one.

  15. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Weefrathe tim. I have already given you what I think we Christians have many things we need to pray about and I would say ISIS and Islam should be on our list.I think to expect mere mortals to sort it out wont happen only the Good Lord can bring true change. H.H.

  16. WeefratheTim,

No Nukes, but they should be obliterated from memory.I am ashamed to say,the country I now reside in are watching them at the moment, attack a Kurdish town, with genocide their aim,1 mile from the Turkish border.Hundreds of tanks lined up doing nothing. You want ISIS taken on,arm the Kurds fully, and see how brave they are then.Turkey against the Kurds being fully armed, and the West going along with them.

  17. Quite obviously you could not drop a nuclear bomb on ISIS. ISIS is an organisation spread over many Countries as was said earlier where exactly would you drop the bomb and who exactly would die, there is no doubt that ISIS footsoldiers would represent less than 5% of the casualties.

ISIS can and will be defeated, if there is a will amongst “civilised” Nations to do so. The reality is many Countries including Turkey are prepared to turn a blind eye. Whilst other so called friends of the West are actively funding and arming them. There is a bigger balancing act going on involving Iran & the Kurds. The guys I am really worried about are the Israelis, they are the only guys with the capability and with the mentality to drop a nuclear bomb, if and when they believe that Iran are close to manufacturing one for themselves.

You are aware, presumably of the Catholic Churches involvement in the war against Nazi Germany? How many lives were saved, but more importantly how many were lost?

WFTT – I agree with much of your sentiment, however it isn’t necessary to deploy nuclear armaments against those demonic monsters. Too many innocents would be vaporised, also such a response would damage the environment irreaperably.

A simple invasion of the Gulf states of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain would suffice.

For that to happen though, it would take the Western powers and Russian to form some kind of pact, and agree how best to share the vast mineral resources that would be up for grabs.

  20. WeefratheTim

    ISIS?

The solution would be for our governments to stop training and supporting them in a proxy war.

From my very limited historical knowledge this is the oldest grievance in the world (or the known world ) and pre dates the spice trail , and the Ottoman empire.

It’ll not be solved by any ole CQN debate, but has been worsened since 9/11 and it’s flawed retaliatory actions, and consequences IMHO.

The grievance is massive and genuinely held, innocents the world over pay the price.

Education and conciliation is the key, which will be for future generations, not us.

I see natural ability in Allan that if honed by Collins and given the conditioning and coaching nous of our manager can really flourish. Put a good player in a good team he can be great. Allan is worth a gamble for me. Good age. Decent experience and plays a lovely pass inside defenders that can’t be taught. It’s all about moving him onto the next level. I can take or leave Ciftci his value is going way over his worth at the minute but Allan is possibly a star in a good footballing side.

I understand that Pfayr totally, but for the very sake of humanity itself – there doesn’t seem to be any other solution.

It’s Wahhabism – Even worse than anything that the Nazis and Communists have ever inflicted upon the world.

Not only is this abomination tolerated by the West, it is being accommodated and allowed to flourish here – only reason being Saudi oil and money.

I don’t have any problem with the benevolent strands of Islam by the way. I support the Syrian Arab Army and Hezbollah.

Feel sorry for the people in the middle East to be honest, perpetual war and mayhem seems to be their lot. I also acknowledge the part being played by the West and Zionism in particular.

  31. Fully expected to lose today, given that they are a full 6 games ahead of us in preparations. They should be concerned at losing 3 goals and only the wholesale changes allowed them to really pull away.

A good first step on our way to full match sharpness for when it REALLY counts in the CL Qualifiers.
