Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

The sooner the west neuk these sub human beings the better. These people MUST be stopped or humanity will come under real threat. Unfortunately, civilians will suffer, how many are suffering now. Just IMO.

Isis would appear to be evil incorporated

But they exist because of the west’s constant interference in the region which goes back to the carve up of the ottoman empire at the end of W W 1 ( and probably further). The Americans were to arm and train the mujahadeen when the Russians were the enemy, the chickens unfortunately are coming home to roost

Your old one won’t work on the new gates, so you need to get hold of the new card, either at your old address or a new issue type.

Isis exist because of the fear they put in to any civil society. They rule by fear of execusion and as soon as they are wiped off the face of this earth, is too soon. PSYCHOPATHIC MURDERERS ALL OF THEM.

So your an Isis supporter then. How many more atrocities do we have to witness to think, er, what do these guys want. They are ferrel animals and the sooner they are wiped out, the world will be a safer place. You must be quite happy to witness the beheadings and this latest report of kids executing army personnel. Sicko.

  22. Wits @ 19.35

IS aka M3 are much more than any post WW1 western involvement in the ME / Arabia.

It is childish second rate nonsense to blame everything on the West.

The trouble started with the Mongols.

They destroyed the Arabian dominated Caliphate in the 13th century.

That then developed into a Turkic expansion which destroyed Constantinople.

The belated Arabia reaction to this was the House of Saud and their hardline theocracy.

IS / ISIL are are funny construct.

They have all the basics in place to be a Western self constructed bogeyman.

Something to scare the plebs fartless and split the aggressive fundamentalist vote.

It is no wonder that they are in full competition with AQ.

Saudi wind up / AQ enemy / Sunni rallying point against Tehran — the list is endless.

This charicature is so complete that they are almost always going to be suggestions that they must be a Western construct.

However the issue is now that they have grown legs and have started to generate their own momentum. The worrying thing about their growth and success is the groundswell of support they are generating and the various strands of opinion that are flocking to their flag.

If they weren’t around another element of fundamentalist thought would have developed to harness this world view. The one thing that seems to link all their elements of support is a hatred of the modern world and an inability to deal with the social complexities that have developed in 1400 years.

The great irony here is that modern Western civilisation owes a lot to the academic and intellectual freedom that came with Islamic expansion. Consequently if IS win and they turn the clock back 1400 years they will be fighting against the forces that made the Caliphate strong in the first place.

    **********

Now that was the easy bit …

The hard bit is what do we do with the LB situation?

  23. BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS on

Got to be honest,WEEFRA is on the button. IS are not looking for negotiation and dialogue.

I dunno how we deal with them short of giving them both barrels. And then some. They have no fear nor shame because of their interpretation of The Koran.

It’s difficult to fight people who are not afraid to die. It’s virtually impossible to fight those who aspire to it.

  24. Wits did you also read Robert Fisks “pity the nation”?
