Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

    Good question.

If Libya is anything to go by, leave it to its own devises and let the country become lawless and controlled in parts by ISIS.

  3. See we have really moved on…”neuk”. That’s the holy city near me?

For all our sakes are we suggesting that the way to stop hundreds of innocents being slaughtered is to slaughter thousands of innocents?

The old nuclear threat has really made the world a safer place has it not? How to solve the issue is bEyond me and my pay grade. Would be good to start with a chat about what they want. Probably same as us, peace to practise their religion, bread on the table, clean water, a job that pays a living wage, an expectation that the children will be born healthy and outlive their parents, an education that allows freedom of thought and expression.

Does that sound like too much? We all take it for granted and get shitty when we are denied what consider to be basic human rights.

The world can be fixed, we have enough food ,money and technology. The issue is all around who holds the keys to the pantry.

  4. A bit heavy the old debate tonight!

Reading comments going back and forth regarding isis, its a false flag campaign.

What always crosses my mind is that isis are a barbaric organisation with wealth off the radar and are a great threat to every human being.

The yanks who trumpet this tripe most of all have even bigger enemies on their border in the sina loa cartel and others who mass behead civilians, coppers, goverment officials etc, burn people in oil drums and tyres, they are even more barbaric than what isis could ever be, however ive never seen or heard a drone flying into mexico there is no war on the terror there and the effects of such organisations poison a huge percentage of their population and others around the world with what they supply inflicting more damage than isis ever could they have real power and real wealth.

    Strange agenda.

  7. Cowiebhoy: just reading back and saw your query. The date of our hootenanny is March 26th, Easter Saturday. There will be lots of commemorative events that weekend and visitors will be able to choose which ones they go to. The government will organise various events, as will various political parties, trade unions and community groups. There will be exhibitions, plays, displays and parades in the city centre that weekend.

cloghercelt and I have provisionally booked a venue for Celtic minded people on the Saturday night where we will have music, chat and beers and maybe some food. We are waiting on confirmation from the venue, we expected a decision last week but the meeting was postponed and we now expect confirmation early next week.

Once our venue is confirmed we will provide further information and we will develop our plans.

I’m talking about the likes of Saudi Arabia.

    Human rights?

Place is worse than Nazi Germany or Lenin’s Russia.

I wouldn’t mind if they kept their ways, laws and ideology in their own part of the world, however they are attempting to spread the poison and inflict it upon the rest of the world.

Sorry if I don’t sound PC enough, but referring to other people as infidels lol some brass neck – they can GTF as far as I am concerned.

Knocked them back to go to Hibernian so I don’t see why not. Certainly wouldn’t be the first. Europe is a big draw for any player signing from another Scottish club.

  12. Seen this on last weeks Russia today channel, what is not reported in the wests coverage is the both sides are using children like this isil and the anti Assad rebels.

The same tactics are common in most third world countries, reports about children being used was common all over Africa for decades.

The Russians have been warning the west about this for a long time but the preoccupation of the western media with making out Russia as the bad guy is more important than actually trying to work together to bring peace.

Everything that is happening suits only one country in the Middle East and while all the factions are slaughtering each other they can concentrate on trying to bring the same solution to Iran. Anyone that was a threat is now in a state of complete anarchy and reduced to third world status the first to go were the secular countries because they were the easiest to reduce to sectarian feudal societies.

Isil have taken over and command one of the biggest oil refineries in the world in Iraq, who is buying that oil ? They are minting their own coinage so some one is paying them, what is it we keep reading on here, follow the money ?

Only when Isis invade mainland Europe, and they will, will all the Countries and supporters of non violent retaliation, realise how wrong they were. Believe me, it is coming. IMHO. Europe can’t prevent illegel immigrants coming in, what chance to stop an invading army. I really do despair.

  18. Refs at Womens World Cup are hopeless.

Watching Germs v Ingerlund and so far have seen about 5 decisions given the wrong way and free kicks where no contact occurred.

But worst one was when Germ girl crossed ball in from near corner flag, the ball was cleared out by English girl, back to the Germ girl again who was flagged as offside.

These refs need to learn the rules of the game.
