Losing players on your own terms

894

A quick straw poll suggests we’re happy with £2m for Adam Matthews, although Sunderland will be happier, having signed what is likely to be a first team player for what is a bargain fee in the English league.  For Celtic, the player had only a year left on his contract, and was not first choice when Mikael Lustig was available.  On other occasions we would struggle to get £500k.

A few factors supported Adam’s marketability and price.  He is part of a successful Wales team who are likely to reach Euro 2016.  Scouts from all over Europe watch Wales and it’s unlikely you’d be able to sign any of that team for less than £2m.

There’s also the Joe Ledley and Victor Wanyama effect.  Joe and Victor were Celtic contemporaries of Adam and both are solid performers for EPL clubs.  Don’t even ask me about what’s going on with Daryl Murphy at the moment, as it beats any rational explanation I can come up with.

Having 20 hugely wealthy neighbours comes with lots of problems, but if we are going to lose players to England, it’s better to lose them on our own terms – when we are in a position to start a fresh building process, than have events overtake us, as appears to be happening at Tannadice this year.

Enjoy events this afternoon at New St Mirren Celtic Park.

I agree with RT’s sentiments myself but I have to say I think, unfortunately, Slan_Abhaile might be on to something. The West has been wrong in so much that it has done in the Arab world for decades or even centuries. But IS does not seem to be just an anti-West terror group and although I think ( hope) that its hreat to the West is overplayed it is a threat all the same and it wont just go away. But bombing Syria or Libya or wherever else will achieve nothing. All my life the politics of the middle east have been a bloody mess. Unfortunately I think I and we have seen noyhing yet.

I see that we are now “bullying” other clubs into selling us their players, according to a certain rag’s headline on newsnow. It’s time that offensive rag was banned from CP completely.

It is disappearing and will become rarer as long as it’s not forced, forcing people to do things stirs the reb in all of us and creates a backlash. The PIRA no linger exist and is becoming less relevant however, that does not suit those in power which is why the know in forcing the issue it will ensure it does not disappear as quickly as it should, it’s the simple reliable divide to conquer strategy that ensures there is a section of society are available for for blame a distraction from the real injustices going on. £44M underspend could have been handed out as one off grants to help the needy and help highlight the plight of those in real need, not a chance, concentrate on vilifying football supporters and create as much divide as possible, it’s easier to rule setting one against the other than trying to gather consensus.

The problem is the wests relentless desire for money and power IMO, it could all have been prevented, reaping and sewing springs to mind, whatever happens, we are just going to have to suck it up.

Mulgrew’s value to Ronny’s Celtic is as a squad player, to be used to cover injuries, suspensions and resting players.

His versatility is his main asset.

He will also be one of the local, older heads to help young players and overseas players fit into the squad.

  14. For those questioning the authenticity of the Deloitte resignation letter (and I understand there are 2 versions , only one of which I’ve seen) , particularly questioning the signature I would point out that it is appropriate for the letter to be signed using the name Deloitte or Deloitte LLP. This is because the Firm are the auditors. The person who writes the name Deloitte on the letter is usually the lead Audit Partner on the engagement. Only Partners within Deloitte are authorized to sign off such a letter as Deloitte.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Just back from another great Sunday with the peninsula

hoops, much discussion about Saturdays game and the

concensus was that Dulka looked technically better and

fitter but thats what friendlies are for, getting rid of the

cobwebs and after all they are into their sixth game of

    their season so far.

As regards big Cifti possibly signing for us, well if he’s

knocked Wigan back and is waiting on us then he gets

my vote, believe me we’ve had bigger scoundrels

wearing the hoops and they have delivered.

Me and my wee princess had our anniversary on Saturday,

47 years married , i said ” do you realise honey bunch i

could have done two murders and a great train robbery

and i’d be free by now, she said ” aye yir very funny noo go

and book something special fur us”

So we went on the restaurant tramcar which travels through

the Melbourne tourist spots while your dining and right down

to St Kilda beachfront and back, now i must tell anyone who

is thinking of coming here on a holiday make this your No1

    priority.

Its the old Victorian type car and decor to suit and apart from

a superb 3 course meal, all the alcohol you can drink is all

    included in the price.

We were lucky enough to be on a tram full of young Irish ghirls

one of whom was going back to Kildare in Ireland after 3 years

working in Oz and this was their send off for her, the waiter a bit

of an old character hearing their accents decided he would sing

them Danny Bhoy, i thought , this will be a laugh, but lo and

behold the old guy had a voice like an Italian tenor and he was

superb, obviously in the wrong job.

After copious amounts of champagne the ghirls decided they would

like to sing, but what song? after they heard my wee darling shout to

me ” Michael do you want another whiskey ” ( silly question ) it was

decided, The Fields of Athenry and it was beautiful and i’m not

ashamed to admit there was tears in these auld eyes.

Now to watch the game on Celtic tv think i better get a couple of

matchsticks ready to keep the eyelids open.

  19. Further to my post after yesterday’s game, and having watched the first half for the second time, niggling doubts remain about Ronny.

I was a massive cheerleader for him, even post Legia, because I saw a style of play which was modern and could really push us on. I believed he would strip the team of the guys who didn’t suit the high tempo, pressing game and we would go from strength to strength.

However, one year on, I saw a team style very reminiscent of the Legia debacle. Both fullbacks bombing on, no competent sitting midfielder and loose passing.

As I said yesterday, if a team press us high up the pitch and make it hard for us to play out from defence (particularly now we have no JD and poss no VVD), we typically give it away. Or, our keeper kicks it long and we have no height to allow us to win it.

Re pressing, when we play against a side we consider ourselves better than (Legia, Europa opponents or Dukla) but who have better than SPFL technique, we just end up getting passed around very easily. Stefan and Stuart are the only ones out of our various offensive players that can press, the others just run at the player very fast but make no actual effort to win the ball. A player who can control and turn in one touch negates the pressing completely.

Take Biton and VVD out of our team and we struggle to play the way Ronny wants to. And by now, we should have the players to play the system. It’s transfer window 3 after all.

I read somewhere that Derek McInnes thinks RD is a ‘lucky coach’, and I think it will be interesting to watch how out season unfolds.

I’m still on the Ronny bus but slightly concerned.

  20. For the record, I thought Charlie, Izzy, Stokes, Commons and possibly Jamesie would all be moved on by now as, whilst all are players with differing strengths, none are suited to a high tempo, pressing game with work rate an essential component.

  21. The Exiled Tim

I am not quite saying the same thing as SA here as I am not advocating bombing IS or engaging them on the ground either. But I do increasingly feel it is way too simplistic to just say it is all the West’s Fault that IS is a threat to the ‘Middle East’ and beyond. The West’s influence may have allowed IS and before it Al Qaeda to start and grow but this is now not just about petrol and/or money.

As for the West being hellbent on war I doubt that- the West has enough problems of its own to want another war. Some people within it will of course but I would say that any western intervention will come about not because of any great desire for war but simply because it’s what the West does when it cannot think of anything else to do.
